Behind the Candelabra
  • Behind the Candelabra started filming last Monday. Here are excerpts from an interview with actor Cheyenne Jackson about the film:

CJ: But, yeah, I start this week on the Liberace movie - and, yes, right now it is called BEHIND THE CANDELABRA. It has such a great cast, too - Debbie Reynolds, Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Matt Damon; just an amazing cast.

    PC: Who is your character?
CJ: I play Jerry O’Rourke, who is Liberace’s first boyfriend. It’s going to be pretty amazing - I couldn’t be more excited. We are going to film in Vegas and Palm Springs and LA - it’s going to be a real adventure.

PC: It is going to be a roughly 2-hour film for HBO, correct?
CJ: Yeah - at this point.

PC: Do you know if it will be expanded to a 4-hour series? It’s been rumored that is being considered, ala Mildred Pierce.
CJ: No clue. It’s a big story to tell, though - but, no, I don’t know the answer to that.

  • A few tweets from Cheyenne and Rob Lowe about the film are below.

    Re: Promised land screening

It's really early for a test screening. I couldn't see any other references to the screening (which appeared to be in Vegas?)

Screening details: 24th at 7:30 red rock

Also: Hollywood Reporter claims incorrectly the film was written by Van Sant and Dave Eggers (but still says it will be released later this year):

First tweets following the screening (on Gus' birthday) look very promising. John was seen at the Vegas airport, so he was presumably at the screening.

    Bourne

Legacy crew are clearly laying the foundation for saying they don't need Matt in a sequel in the latest comments from the press conference (as the film looks like being a big hit):

    http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=92776

Matt's hurt Gilroy and they don't want him back.

    http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/exclusive-tony-gilroy-pulls-the-curtain-back-on-the-secretive-bourne-legacy-20120720?page=6

Tony Gilroy declines to engage in questions about Matt Damon, the star of the ‘Bourne’ series who made disparaging remarks about Gilroy’s ‘Bourne Ultimatum’ script earlier this year. But suffice it to say the filmmaker still seems shocked, surprised and hurt for someone he clearly has admiration for. "I don't understand that at all. I don't know where it came from. I think Matt is one of the greatest actors of his generation,” Gilroy told Empire magazine recently.

    Re: Bourne

I find it hard to believe gilroy doesnt know where matts coming from with his comments.

I think I have resigned myself to believe Matt will not be Bourne again. Especially hearing him say out loud if this is a success they won't want him back. He knows what the deal is and as a fan I'm at peace with it. But I still am not interested in this next chapter.

Unfortunately it probably will be a big hit (it will be sweet if it does bomb, can't help it). And i guess we'll see if it does catapult Jeremy renner into super stardom because he was worried about losing his anonymity. (rolling eyes)

    Re: Bourne

I agree. Gilroy is purposely avoiding answering questions about Matt's comments because he would have to confront the fact that he screwed over the Bourne Ultimatum because he got the same paycheque whether he produced a good script or not (I wonder why the studio ever gave him that deal??). It's hard for me to believe the studio invited him back after that, they should have given him a taste of his own medicine.

I'm sure Matt is sick of answering questions about it! But he must be at peace with his decision. He made three good movies and gave them his all, and even more impressive, he knew to quit when he was ahead and didn't betray the audience or himself by committing to a project he knew wouldn't be worthy of the series just to get more money.

I personally am not convinced that Renner has the charisma and appeal to be a big movie star who can carry a series on his own, but perhaps that's just my own feelings. I think many people will see the film just because of the "Bourne" in the title. However....I think people like good, conclusive endings and the "wide open" ending of Legacy that the studio is playing up may feel to the audience like just a silly excuse to make another film (which obviously it is). I am expecting it to be a hit as well, but I do hope that all the reviews say that Renner is no replacement for Matt...I'm so petty :)

    Ranting over!!

    Re: Bourne

I agree. I think Renner plays the same wannabe crazy guy personality in every role from Hurt Locker, to The Town (where he wasn't all that great) to even his cameo role in House. He was clearly the most uninteresting part of The Avengers to me. And he's obviously hiding in Hollywood. I'm sure he's a decent guy, and he's just taking the money offered, but I don't regard him as an actor or star.

    Re: Bourne

I agree that Renner is so far a one dimensional actor.

Since there will be a deluge of press soon re fauxBourne, I was wondering if you have access to the quotes from Gilroy trashing the original trilogy when it came out? I know I've seen quotes from him bashing both Supremacy and Ultimatum (and maybe Identity, too). Seeing that the trailers make it obvious that he has taken Ultimatum and fused his story to it, I think it would be highly interesting to see them again, but I can't find them.

    Re: Bourne

I thought some of Gilroy's comments were made on Dave Poland's The Hot Blog, but there appears to only be video interviews with Gilroy, such as this one:
    http://moviecitynews.com/2009/03/dp30-tony-gilroy/

Can't find any comments on Hollywood Elsewhere.

    Re: Bourne

Odd - I distinctly remember reading Gilroy's bitter comments about Supremacy and Ultimatum. Maybe Universal has been cleaning up after him. It was amusing to see him change the subject with a non-sequiter when asked whether he was ever on set for those movies.
mattdamoncolumn From: mattdamoncolumn Date: July 24th, 2012 11:37 pm (UTC) (Link)

    Re: Bourne

The comments were from Gilroy when he was promoting his new movie after Ultimatum had already come out. He was very snarky and dismissive of the series - but the comments were definitely made.

    Vulture Most Valuable Stars List

Matt is at number 6 (I'm not surprised, but everyone else apparently is).

    6. Matt Damon
The Sign of Quality: Much like the other sides of the Oceans 11 triangle, George Clooney and Brad Pitt, Matt Damon resists all temptations to sell out and invariably makes the interesting choice: When you see his face in an ad, you know that the project isn’t going to be an average example of that genre, just as the Bourne movies weren’t mere actioners and True Grit wasn’t just a western. Next year’s Elysium, directed by District 9’s allegory-prone Neill Blomkamp, promises to be anything but generic sci-fi, and then there’s the slated HBO Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra (in which he plays the young lover of Michael Douglas’s pianist). With Damon’s presence as its own meaningful imprimatur, he’s managed to bring some increasingly rare adult films to a surprisingly high gross, hence his high studio rating: "surprising" because his targeted grown-up, discerning audience doesn’t rush out to an opening weekend. As a result, his mid-price films are often dismissed as underperformers when they don’t debut strong — then a year later, you look up to see that We Bought a Zoo, roundly considered one of last Christmas’s duds, grossed $75.6 million in the U.S. Nobody paid much attention to the relatively low-tech Adjustment Bureau at the time (That’s the hat movie, right?), but it wound up with $62.5 million. An ardent activist, he’s cognizant that his serious films and causes threaten to paint him as a dour personality, so he’s quick to preempt that by popping up in Jimmy Kimmel skits and SNL digital shorts. Say his name and while some people will think of his work with Haiti, many more will start humming, "I’m fucking Matt Damon."

    Domestic Box Office $60,600,000
    Overseas Box Office $62,600,000
    Studio Value 8
    Likeability 72%
    Oscars 1 win, 2 noms
    Critics' Score 63
    Magazine Covers 11
    Tabloid Value 6

(Why do people always miss an Oscar nomination, and why is his likeability only 72%?)

Ah, this was a nice tonic to all that depressing talk about the Bourne rip-off movie. Thanks for posting it - interesting to see Matt ahead of Clooney and DiCaprio.

Re: Vulture Most Valuable Stars List

As someone else has already said, this is a nice read. I thought Matt would be much lower down the list, probably at 12 or 13, so very happy he's at number 6.

He makes movies for grown ups who are very badly served by Hollywood at the moment (when will Hollywood wake up and realise that there is a bigger market than 14 year old boys from middle America who want to see porn or things exploding)?

From the movies he's made he shows that money isn't his main motivator, other wise he would have signed on to Bourne Legacy, phoned in his performance and watched the money roll in, much like Gilroy with his crappy script for Ultimatum. And I think that is why Matt's criticism stung, it showed Gilroy up as a sell-out.

Renner is probably hoping that Legacy does well and catapults him into the A-list, I don't buy the nonsense of him not wanting to let go if his anonymity (why become an actor in the first place if that were true).

Gilroy and Marshall have hung their hopes on a thin reed indeed. Renner is flavour of the month in Hollywood right now and raking it in whilst he can. I don't blame him, acting is tough and many fall by the wayside.

Privately, he's probably a very nice man, but as an actor he's simply not in Matt's league.

I read a review of the summer blockbusters heading to these shores in the next few months in the Daily Telegraph a few weeks ago; the journalist compared Legacy to the previous 3 movies and wrote that Legacy had everything except Matt Damon's heart. For me that is why even if the movie succeeds I will consider it a failure.

As far as I'm concerned Matt's career will be long and he'll always work. He has a great life, and a wonderful family. Much to be grateful for.

I'm going to be mean and hope Legacy flops, I want Universal to go grovelling back to Matt and Paul and have to eat a lot of humble pie :) Marcia

Re: Vulture Most Valuable Stars List

And based on his performance on Kimmel, Jeremy Renner is pretty tasteless in interviews, and boring. He doesn't have much of a public personality (except crude and complaining).

    Legacy

From the screenings today, Matt's seen in a photo in the new movie but there's no cameo. Matt presumably does not have rights over Universal using his image.

Lucy looks amazing. I'm actually not surprised that he would go to pilates, he's mentioned before that he's tried things like yoga and tango.

LaineyGossip and Variety are reporting that Matt is in the TIFF movie Imogene...could this be??
She also seems to think he and Penelope actually dated years ago...hard to know.

    Re: Photos

It's Matt Dillon in Imogene - can't believe Variety haven't fixed their story and Lainey picked it up. There was never confirmation of Matt dating Penelope (mostly because it would have crossed over during the time Matt was dating Winona) but there were rumors.
From: (Anonymous) Date: July 25th, 2012 01:28 am (UTC) (Link)

    Re: Photos

It was rumored that Matt left Winona for her but they always denied they were dating. Matt in one comment made it sound like because they were both working non stop there was no time to date or to sustain a relationship for that matter.

I remember Penelope attending one of the onexone events that Matt hosted and there was a picture taken of Lucy & pene talking so they met each other.

I also think Lucy looks great. I have wondered if she goes to the gym like Matt. (of course Matt usually does for a role). Maybe Lucy's thing is pilates.

Soderbergh and co are doing a on location shoot on Friday for liberace. Maybe we'll get some fan pics.

    Re: Photos

I think that shoot on Friday could be a pivotal scene where Thorson is kicked out of Liberace's apartment (he's high on drugs at the time and it's a very public display of out of control behaviour).

There have been photos before in Miami and New York of Lucy and Matt going to the gym together.

Didn't Penelope call Matt "the perfect man" on some talk show? Maybe Oprah Winfrey? Seems like I remeber that - and Oprah going, "Oooooooohhhhh". Ha.
