Elysium preview and trailer
  • Matt attended an event to promote Elysium in Berlin on Monday, which included a satellite link to Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley in LA talking about the film with an audience. The poster has also been released, with the first trailer to be released on Tuesday. Reports on the trailer preview are at various sites including HitFix, First Showing.net and Berlin Morgenpost. For the Berlin papers Matt talked about working in Berlin's cold weather and how Lucy liked his Elysium appearance (translated version). Photos are from Zimbio.

For his role, Matt Damon is bald, has fake tattoos and lots of muscles. His wife especially liked the latter. "She liked it, and lived together for a few months with this guy - and then I came back," the actor joked.

    GMA

GMA had a pretty ridiculous story on 'The most daring roles ever' with quotes from a Hollywood Reporter staffer:

    Re: GMA

I think they're just having some fun with it. I think the story's cute.

    Elysium Re-post

For anyone who missed my blurb yesterday's LA Q&A:

Well... we all should be excited for ELYSIUM!! Thumbs Up!! Way up!!

I'm not a member of the press so this is just my personal ramblings. Approx 200 general audience members and about 50-100 members of press showed up at the ArcLight Hollywood today for the noon trailer release and extended 10 minute "teaser" for ELYSIUM with Q&A. I spotted Matt's PR rep Jennifer Allen in attendance. Free popcorn/soda distributed pre-event and full-size posters distributed after the event (yay)! It was a very nicely handled event and security was surprisingly casual (only telling us not to film or photograph during the trailer(s) and Q&A). At noon, a moderator, producer Simon Kinberg, actor Sharlto Kopley, and director/writer Neill Bloomkamp took their director seats in front of two cameras in front of the auditorium. We were introduced to all and then a live satellite feed to Berlin was qued and whalla Matt was brought out to a similar set-up, with a moderator in front of an audience in Berlin. Matt was introduced by the German moderator and the audience in Berlin went nuts. Their applause and excitement almost seemed "canned" as most in LA laughed at the site of their audience exhuberantly clapping with a 5 sec delay. Matt wore jeans, his black framed glasses, a dark grey long sleeve shirt and he looked good and smiling. He took his seat and acknowledged us in LA and how we must be out of work or out of school to be attending a mid-day event while it was 9pm in Berlin and thanked the audience for their evening attendance.

We were then shown the official ELYSIUM trailer. The question was then posed to Matt to describe his character's purpose and predicament. (he briefly described what we all already know). The director was then asked about the idea of the film and working with Sharlto again. Sharlto spoke about how District 9 was very much improvised and how ELYSIUM is all scripted and how Neil stuck to the script. When the question was posed to him about how working with Neil had changed, if at all, he humorously said how Neil is now known and he himself is now known paritally and them squabbling over, Neil: 'Read the lines' Sharlto: 'But improvisation worked last time' and how Jodi and and Matt looked on them saying 'who are these two, it's only their second movie.' We were then treated to an extended trailer (approx 10 min long) which showed in much more depth, Matt's earthly life, a potential love interest or wife with a small girl (the actress looked Hispanic), his then predicament, his effort to extract information from a chip connected to the brain of a politician? from Elysium who visits earth, which will provide Matt's ability to obtain information or identity falsfication? to get to Elysium to cure himself. There was a 2 minute fight scene shown of this takedown of the politician? where Matt is given a rail gun (enter the Bourne Damon) to shoot at the robots protecting the politician. Jodi Foster meanwhile looks on at the events taking place on a monitor from Elysium circling somewhere up in space above Earth (blond short wig and slight French or German accent). Beautiful Elysium shots shown of a picturesque looking "new Earth" with mansions, greenery, planned community living as if Earth were to be redesigned in a much more aesthetically pleasing clean environmentally paradisical place (partially filmed in Vancouver said Bloomkamp and blue screen) all juxtaposed against a very dirty, graffitied, burned out, trashed Earth (filmed on the outskirts of Mexico City said Bloomkamp)....

    Re: Elysium Re-post

    cont-

...The extended trailer ended similar to the regular trailer with short shots of Matt desperately climbing and clawing and figting, and what appears to be eventually inside a spacecraft or headquarters in Elysium walking beastly-like with blood dripping off his fingers. Overall, the trailer is exhilirating, INTENSE, and very exciting looking. When the trailer was over, Matt was then asked how he prepared for the role since he looked different said the moderator. Matt replied working out daily. And he then answered the question we've heard asked of him before regarding why he wanted to do the film because of Bloomkamp, District 9, and the detailed artistic renderings Bloomkamp provided Damon to decide on the being in the film. A little discussion about location shooting was discussed as I noted above.

Matt's face looked quite thinned down (younger looking) in the trailer and his body buffed up. There was a shot in the extended trailer of a shirtless front shot of him with his tatooed chest and his visible abs. There is an awesome close-up shot of his blue eyes in the trailer rising from below out of frame. Also in the extended trailer we see them drilling into his head and him laying on a make-shift medical table (by the thugs who will help him get to Elysium) to put the exoskelatel information spine from the back of his head down his back. His character comes across as the everyman in the beginning of trailer with a little bad ass humor as he jargons with some robots who ask what's in his backpack while waiting in line to go to work (he works in a factory? or some sort of laborer), he replies "hey guys, hair products" LOL he's bald. And then when they knock him to the ground, whip his arm, and depart they thank him to which he replies, "No, thank you". But once he has his exoskelatal headpiece on and he's on his quest to get to ELYSIUM the Bourne Damon (slight Boston accent maybe) kicks in. Also theres a few seconds of him talking to the woman mentioend above (female interest with daughter?) and he says to her something like "I'm going to make it all alright".

I think I've covered all the ground now. Be sure to check twitter, & instagram for #elysium for additional photos & posts that anyone may have posted. I took a photo of my poster (similar to Bourne Ultimatum teaser poster of the back of his head) and one of the pre-event auditorium set-up of chairs to the left of the screen and white letters "#elysium" on the screen, but you can see both of these on twitter and instagram that other people posted!!

I think the best way to describe this movie is Bourne meets Elysium. (no similarity to Bourne meets Greenzone). It'll be great to have Matt in a highly anticipated action film this Summer, with story, acting, & visuals we can and one we can all get behind !!

    Elysium trailer

Here's the Elysium trailer. After the hype, it looks to me more like a spoof than an actual trailer:

    Re: Elysium trailer

I love it. Elysium looks sleek and real, earth looks ruined and real, and Matt looks different than I've ever seen him. The juxtaposition of the two environments is very effective. Blomkamp said that he wanted to give away as little as possible in the trailer, and this is just the most basic outline of the story. But the robots and transport vehicles have that Blomkamp vibe that people talk about - it's totally futuristic and yet believable because all the mechanics seem somehow familiar. that's a real gift.

I'm kind of a sci-fi fan generally, especially when it's smart, socially relevant sci-fi. Of course, I also loved Matt's extreme close-up. They could shoot the whole movie that way as far as I'm concerned! Lol. Color me happy.

    Re: Elysium trailer

I'm with Paula! The 10 min extended trailer I was fortunate to see was more hashed out and made this "spoof" make more sense. It had more of the story rather than just images. As with all Matt's movies, this is a character driven vehicle for him.

    Re: Elysium trailer

I think the acting looks unconvincing and the dialogue is dreadful but the visuals are pretty. Hoping it improves in the next trailer/clips.

    Re: Elysium trailer

The trailer is great - tells the story clearly and I'm excited how this is a good comparison to world issues and the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Messianic Matt to the rescue. :) M..
