    Soderbergh

Soderbergh's new marketplace site includes some Candelabra photos and movie memorabilia:

    BTC

I read somewhere that Matt's performance in BTC is compared to his work in Ripley. Since you've seen the movie, do you think this is an accurate comment? (IMO, Ripley was Matt's better job so far)
I think all the awards will be for Michael Douglas, which is fine and deserved, but also a little unfair to Matt who took a bigger risk by doing this movie.

PS: For a moment, I did not recognize Alexia. She has grown so much that she looks more like Lucy's sister instead of her daughter.

    Re: BTC

Hard to compare with Ripley, where Minghella deliberately had Matt in every scene of the movie in some form. Here he's the secondary character who develops throughout the film. The performance isn't duplicitous. It is interesting that many of Matt's more recognised roles have been playing real people, not characters.

I liked the GQ review of Matt v his character.

    http://www.gq.com/blogs/the-feed/2013/05/tom-carson-on-michael-douglas-in-behind-the-candelabra.html
Matt Damon plays Thorson, and he's not bad at all. Despite being much too old for the part—the real Thorson was all of 18 when he encountered "Lee's" world—and too obviously brainy to be anyone's boy toy, he's still convincingly an object of desire.

Then again, one proof of Damon's intelligence is that he obviously knows this is his co-star's movie.

You wince a little for Damon's sake at the radiant forgiveness he's got to project, since that not only sentimentalizes Thorson as well but distorts him into the audience's stand-in.

    Re: BTC

Well I haven't seen BTH yet so I can't compare but it wouldn't be fair is one actor will get an award but not the other (main ones) because they both put themselves out there! Yah, Lucy's oldest daughter does look much grown and I like her hair that length rather then before.

    Btc screening

It seems there was a behind the candelabra screening tonight in London. It appears Michael Douglas was there but not matt. At least I don't think. I saw 2 tweets of matt on a airplane. Is going back to ny or the uk?

Matt's LA home is currently being renovated on the interior. I wonder when the move will take place.

I've been enjoying all the BTC coverage. The Cannes press conference was most informative regarding the prosthetics, Matt's description of making the movie daily, etc.

I thought the whole family looked VERY nice. I only wish Matt's suit was a little more tailored and not so baggy.

Oh but Matt looked well put together...he'd look awesome in white or cream or like other colors too (dad used to wear mint and spif it up with acessories like in the old fashion days and he looked so handsome) :)

I thought Matt looked great, too. I liked the dark blue as opposed to true black and the fact there was a vest.

    Interview

A fun interview with Matt (really cracking up), Michael and Jerry which focuses more on sports than the film. Jerry even asks the host for a copy of the tape.

Probably my favorite review yet is up at the New Yorker. Insightful, knowledgable of cultural context, beautifully written.

    Re: Reviews, etc

    This one's great too:

    http://www.newrepublic.com/article/113291/behind-candelabra-review-hbo-liberace-film

Douglas is spectacular; he makes a dull story watchable, he plays to the fascination with gossip, and he lets us keep our cool. He may well win prizes, which is fair enough. But the real triumph of the film is Matt Damon’s Scott Thorson. Liberace never alters or wavers in the story (until death), but that is often the way of performers who have given up their own lives. Thorson is the character who progresses, from an aimless, star-struck pretty boy to someone who is picked up by Liberace and turned into a wife. Then, like so many wives, he begins to bore the husband and has to wonder which exit he is meant to use.

There was a real Thorson, and the script by Richard La Gravenese is based on the book Thorson published, which was labeled as a novel. That guy stuck around for six years; he was loved and fucked by Liberace; he had surgery in the effort to look like the hero; and in that process he began a descent into drug addiction. This arc allows Damon to go from plump, sulky kid to ruin. When Scott realizes that he is just one more of Lee’s boys–and a camera angle by director Steven Soderbergh rubs that in–there is a quality of humiliation, hatred, and self-loathing in his face that is remarkable. Thorson is a dirty part (if you like), for the man seems to have few redeeming features, but Damon has unearthed Thorson’s point of view, just as Douglas prefers to let us believe he is a lot more honest than Liberace ever managed to be. Damon deserves the prizes, and I think it’s clear now that he has delivered on the promise he showed in films like Courage Under Fire, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Good Shepherd, and which has had to mark time patiently in too much Bourne-ing.

Douglas is more than acceptable, but Damon has made an unforgettable character. Of course, he had the advantage: For some of us Liberace is still a fake moon in the sky–we know what he looked like. We remember the mincing dishonesty. But Scott Thorson is unknown and he comes out of the dark as the story that needs to be told.

Thanks for the link. The video only worked for me with IE and not Chrome or Mozilla.

Crazy scheduling for Matt, who is definitely back in NY (a few sightings around school today). Maybe he's in NY for Memorial Day weekend and will then go to London for two weeks. He wouldn't have a significant role in these scenes, which is essentially when the group of characters are introduced. Filming may be around the Salisbury area.

Michael Douglas was on Graham Norton's show today.
