Rounders sequel and new project
  • Harvey Weinstein has announced a new range of projects based on Miramax properties, including a possible Rounders sequel and a television series of Good Will Hunting. Reports are at Deadline and Grantland:

“I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous,” Weinstein continued. “The guys [writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman] have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris, that’s all I want to say. There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new supervillain to replace John Malkovich.” Weinstein is eyeing Robert De Niro for that role.

In a statement today, Koppelman and Levien add, "For years we have been talking to Matt, Edward, [Rounders director] John Dahl and Harvey about the movie we'd all want to make. Rounders was completely life changing for us. We all respect the world of the original film immensely and want to do it proud."

  • Deadline has also announced that Matt and Ben are executive producers for a new spec action adventure script written by John Krasinski and Oren Uziel:

Warner Bros has acquired an action-adventure spec script written by John Krasinski and Oren Uziel. Krasinski and his Sunday Night banner will team with Pearl Street partners Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to produce under their Warner-based company.

Uziel, best known for scripting the genre mash-up The Kitchen Sink, which is getting made at Sony Pictures, will be exec producer along with Scott Z. Burns.
The studio is keeping the logline under wraps.

  • The teaser trailer for Interstellar has been released.

  • The Monuments Men official site has been updated with new photos, information and games.

  • A new interview (conducted at a previous junket) for Elysium to mark the film's release on DVD from Jetset magazine, including (translated):

RM: Are you interested in fashion? Are you a victim Fashion?
MD: I always wanted to be comfortable in my clothes. My father always told me: "You know, to be well you must be comfortable in you shoes." I probably took his advice to the letter, but I thought I was fashionable until I saw my photos from high school (laughs ...) I think life is a long period of bad clothing choices. You would never wear that 15 years later. But I have no problem wearing suits, especially to go to Hollywood ceremonies.

RM: You and George Clooney seem to be best friends, how is it in real life?
MD: For 12 years we have been friends and frankly I cannot find any fault with him. Maybe he has, but I do not see them. He is a wonderful person, incredibly generous and he is one of the best directors I've worked with. He works pretty well too and I have just finished filming the "The Monuments Men" film. I know what I'm saying may seem trite, but Geroge is as he seems, he is always natural and has no "frills".

RM: And with Ben Affleck, are you are still close?
MD: Of course. We are neighbors in Los Angeles, our wives are friends and we work together very often surrounded by a group of friends and close associates who follow us through all our projects. Ben's opinion is very valuable to me.

    Various

For weeks there is no Matt news, and then all of the sudden, a glut of stuff. His publicist needs to spread this stuff out more! Lol.

Couldn't be more excited about the Rounders sequel. One of the most under rated movies of all time. Fantastic cast, the original writers back, just hoping that Harvey will pay to get a top director, because that's the person that can make it all sing. And even though it wasn't a hit originally, lots of people have seen it and loved it over the years on TV. Great!

On the other hand, making Good will Hunting into a TV show is beyond horrible. That movie is an absolutely beloved classic. No, no. And no.

Interesting to see Scott Burns as an exec producer on the Krasinski project. Curious to see what that's all about. Maybe Matt will be involved as something more than producer. Don't care for Krasinski as an actor much.

The Interstellar trailer is soooo classy. Nice.

Thanks for keeping us updated on the MM site. I can't get some of it to work for me, but if you go to the 'history' section (I think that's what it's called) there are two short clips from the movie that feature Matt. They are terrific. Very sobering and compelling. The movie is obviously not all fun and games. It is also going there.

    Re: Various

Thanks Paula. I'm also hoping that GWH the series never happens. Very funny to see writers like Guy Lodge completely flummoxed as to why Rounders would ever get a sequel. Matt always says people on the street ask him about Rounders more than any other movie.

Still wondering if The Foreigner is on the schedule at all. Nothing about that movie has been confirmed yet, and Matt may not have been given the go-ahead to direct. Otherwise, he said he was having the rest of 2013 off, but there's nothing yet confirmed for 2014 (and hopefully it's not Rounders 2).

    Re: Various

Sorry, everybody, the clips are under the link for "education".

Didn't those guys write one of the Ocean's movies?

Yes, the delay on The Foreigner makes me think Matt can't get it off the ground. Even I think it would be an incredibly complicated project for a first time director. He must feel very drawn to the content, but personally I'd rather see him start with something smaller that would be easier to promote.

Even though Elysium made almost $300 million world wide and must have been profitable the so-so reviews and marginal US box office might mean he's a bit cold as an actor right now. McConaughey is so hot he may be getting the offers we would like to see going to Matt. There is a ton of competition in his age bracket right now. Good actors, too. He needs a quality, well-received project.

    Re: Various

I also hope that we never watch a GWH TV serie. When I read that, I thought it was a joke. It's a too nice, charming and unique movie; it will be absolutely destroyed. Maybe GWH Legacy, with Jeremy Renner as the fourth friend of Will...

    Ha, ha, ha!

Excellent. Yes, Jeremy stars as "Bill Hunter", who was born an idiot and made intelligent through the experimental use of "chems".

    Long time lurker here.

Are Levien and Koppelman also the screenwriters of Runner Runner? I just can't expect the Rounders sequel to be good.

    Rounders

Yes. They have made a living off Rounders and imitations since. Koppelman must also be a friend of Matt's, as he was at Matt's renewal of vows earlier this year. But Runner, Runner was dreadful and they haven't showed much chops over the years (Knockaround Guys?)

    Re: Rounders

sigh, I hope all these are just PR strategies Weinstein used to promote their back at Miramax and fianlly they will come up with something better.

    Men's Health

The Men's Health interview should be out soon - a water.org promo (good photo by Sam Jones):

    Nora Garrity ‏@norakat75
@menshealthmag is supporting cover guy Matt Damon and his clean @water cause. You can, too: http://bit.ly/1heEL5l pic.twitter.com/VKLLdBzEXt

There's also a video of the trip with the editor (and probably a cover promo shot) on the website:
