The Martian, Ice Bucket Challenge
  • Ridley Scott has confirmed The Martian will shoot in Budapest later this year.

Ridley Scott is a busy man. The director, 76, is currently putting the final touches on Exodus: Gods and Monsters, starring Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton (in theaters Dec. 12). But last week, he told EW a little about his next project, The Martian starring Matt Damon, which is slated for November 2015. “It’s a very good book,” says Scott of Andy Weir’s novel, which was originally self-published in 2012 before being republished by Crown this year. The story follows Mark Watney, an astronaut who becomes stranded and assumed dead on Mars after a deadly storm. “It’s like Robinson Crusoe—if you were marooned or shipwrecked, how do you survive?”

Scott says he’s already storyboarded the film and is ready to begin shooting in November. “I think I’m going to shoot in Budapest,” he says. “And we’ll probably shoot in Wadi Rum for Mars. I like Wadi Rum—it’s the best view I’ve ever seen of what could be Mars.” (The alien-looking location in Jordan has been used in Lawrence of Arabia and, more recently, for some of Scott’s Exodus.)

  • Matt's Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS is available at water.org or YouTube. Matt challenged George Clooney, Bono and Tom Brady.

Thanks Paula, great news. It managed to get attention despite being released near the end (maybe) of this drawn out challenge. I like this recent tweet.

    Re: Matt's ALS bucket challenge

Wow, I just checked again and it now has over 343,000 views on youtube! Amazing!

Man, that was fast! I noticed a number of tweets that appeared to be from the developing world. India, the Phillipines. Perhaps that's why the fast movement? This could end up being being very significant for raising water.org's profile internationally among people who haven't yet had direct contact with it.

Very, very successful. Congrats to Matt.

    Matt's ALS bucket challenge

Hey! 744,845 now! When you wrote a few days ago (22nd aug.) that he would probably do a promotion for water.org and use recycled water, you were totally right, Felicity. You know Matt so well!

    Re: Matt's ALS bucket challenge

Woah, now over one million views!

From the time I got up, watered the garden (it's over 100 degrees here) and took a shower (hey, I had to water, but because of Matt's raising my awareness, it was a really SHORT shower;) and got dressed, the youtube video had added about 70,000 views!

Congrats again, Matt, hope this is helping water.org

I have a well to do friend who after she saw this started checking out water.org and is now switching one of her monthly donations to them. I just love our Matty. He's a singular individual. What a good man.

Interesting - Jon Hamm wanted Matt's role in The Martian!

“There are a lot of things I wanted which have gone to other people.” For example? “Ridley Scott’s new film The Martian. It should be amazing, it’s a beautiful script and I was like, 'I’d like to do that’. They were like, '…it’s not for you’. It’s going to be Matt Damon.”
    .............
Global fame does not appeal to Hamm. He claims the recognition he’s experienced pales in comparison to the pressure faced by heavyweight film stars. “I’ve seen it. I know Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio. I wouldn’t trade my life for theirs. It’s horrible. You can’t go anywhere; you can’t do anything. Matt’s actually got the right balance and George has a pretty good life too,” he laughs. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m just saying that they have this double-edged sword that you really can’t control.”

Thanks, good quotes from Hamm (and great news about The Martian's script).

The Martian, John Hamm, guess the view count?

Oh, yeah fantastic news about The Martian! I read a rumor online somewhere that the script was supposed to be good, but you never know about that sort of thing. It makes sense that Scott wouldn't have signed onto it unless it offered real quality, as he has a hugely busy schedule and many in-demand projects competing for his attention. But it's still great to hear it from the perspective of a respected actor like Hamm. What thrills a studio is not necessarily the same thing that thrills a terrific actor. Can't ask for more than a completely unprompted "amazing" and "a beautiful script". I really love Jon Hamm, he's sooooo talented. I'll miss Mad Men terribly.

    "Matt's actually got the right balance". That's our boy. <3 <3 <3

Matt's Youtube video still piling up the views. Does anybody want to have some fun and play "Guess the View Count"?

What say we call it at 10 pm after one week (Felicity's time) from the day it went up? Does that work for you, Felicity? Assuming it is and anybody else wants to play, it's at approx 1.5 million now. I'll guess 3.75 million.

No, it will slow down after the initial rush. Although People has included a story on its site today.

Just noticed that the Youtube views for the video now number over 3.1 million. :-)

Too bad nobody took me up on the 'Guess the Views' challenge!! It might make it to 3.75!

    Bucket challenge

Here's an unexpected ripple effect from Matt's bucket challenge video. A spokesperson from UNICEF was invited onto an MSNBC news show to reflect on the statistics Matt's video brought up. Unfortunately she wasn't a particularly interesting speaker, but It's certainly a news clip focused on water that would not have happened without Matt getting people thinking and talking.

Wow, time and again his public comments are so effective. He has such a gift that way. He's a national treasure, really.

    Re: Bucket challenge

Water.org will be involved in a session at the Hollywood Film Festival as part of a water crisis presentation. That may send a lot of strange messages, but it's more promotion for the cause.

Here's a strange take by an Australian financial newspaper which seems to have completely lost the point of Matt's video, or it could be just badly written.

I've tried to report the current @mattdamon twitter account which has recently moved from inert to obscene, but they haven't cancelled it yet.
