Honorees at the Palm Springs Film Festival gala were campaigning and practicing their awards speeches Saturday night.

Chairman of the Board recipient Matt Damon suggested his “The Martian” director Ridley Scott, for instance, was overdue even though he had helmed an Oscar best picture winner in “Gladiator.”

“There are only a handful of master directors on the planet and Ridley is one of them.”

As the last honoree of the night Damon may have felt pressure to wrap up, especially with some empty tables before him.

“There’s a bunch of people I want to thank, but I won’t do it here, I’ll do it privately,” he said.

    **
Celebrities were coming out to sign autographs so fast in the waning moments before they had to be ushered inside, that it created one funny, friendly collision. When Matt Damon was going down the line to his right, and Fassbender was going down the line to his left and they ran into each other.

"Oh, hey!" Damon said as they hugged, drawing laughter and a lot of flash-bulbs from the crowd.

    On the awards front

On the awards front The Martian was nominated for an ACE Eddie award (in the drama, not comedy category) from the editors guild. This has typically been an important precursers to Oscar noms. Particularly important for it to show up here since it got shafted at SAG. However, the presumed frontrunner Spotlight was not nominated, which has the pundits shaking their heads. It's shaping up to be a weird year. Maybe weird enough to have a sci-fi-fact movie win best picture?! 🌱

    Screening

Looks like they're still doing screenings with Matt, Ridley and now Jessica - this time in New York for SAG members:

    Quote

Missed this line from Matt's speech:

    http://entertainment.suntimes.com/entertainment-news/matt-damon-cate-blanchett-among-big-stars-palm-springs-fete/

Damon noted how difficult it sometimes is to know if a movie is going to be a hit, noting “John Krasinski and I wrote and starred in ‘Promised Land’ — a film we were so passionate about — and it was seen by like eight people. … But then along comes ‘The Martian’ and you make a movie just about everybody saw. Go figure.”

    Awards watch

The Martian was nominated by the Art Director's Guild - interestingly, it was placed in the Contemporary (as opposed to Fantasy) category.

More importantly, it was nominated by the PGA (producer's guild) which is typically a very important precurser to the Oscars.

    Re: Awards watch

They had it available on my UNITED Airlines flight for free on demand. Of course I watched it a 4th time!! Even on a tiny screen still enjoyed it. Part of me thinks that the film may have a real shot at best picture. Why? Because voters like feel good films and this certainly is a feel good film with a solid cast and solid director. It's held on very strongly since October and continues to get press in the trades. These signs indicate to me that it might win. The trades have also been very positive and benevolent towards Matt so I don't know what that could mean, but possibly a strong chance there too.

    Re: Awards watch

That late surge of press in December is probably helping, even if there's nothing significant to say. I'd say the swing is going towards Mad Max as being both a critical and financial success, and it seems to be winning more significant awards.

Matt's looking super casual at the NPR awards (photos on Getty). Strike that, those photos were from the Film Society of Lincoln Center luncheon. The red carpet for the NBR dinner has just started.

I'm sure Matt enjoyed receiving his award from DeNiro. And Lucy has shoes that are positively scary! Ha.
