    Matt and family at Disneyland

Re: Matt and family at Disneyland

So intrusive. They must have been followed by photographers and fans all day (but to Matt's credit, he knows what is coming and still does it for the kids).

John Krasinski talks about his first conversation with Matt (as Matt brought up in the GQ interview):

    Jason Bourne opens in China

Jason Bourne debuted on Tuesday in China with $12.3M.
Wednesday earned an est. -40% from debut.
    China's 2-day total is est. $18.8M.

And the movie has yet to be released in Japan and Russia, among other markets.
If these numbers hold, J.B. could even exceed the final B.O. of Ultimatum, IMO.

    Richest list

Matt's number 3 this year on the list of the richest stars, mostly due to The Martian. $55 million. I guess he had a back end deal?

Forbes won't open for me so I can't link it.

    Matt Damon $55 million
The red planet turned green: Damon's The Martian grossed a mighty $630.1 million on a $108 million budget. Damon earned handsomely from the film and nabbed a Best Actor Oscar nod, while banking sizable checks for his return as Jason Bourne and an east-west co-production, The Great Wall

    Re: Richest list

I don't quite understand. This amount includes and Jason Bourne and the Great Wall? Then it isn't enough.

The figures listed by Forbes are an estimate only (their best guess), and salaries could be split over different years.

Something interesting I read today in an interview Matt:
"My eldest daughter Alexia turned eighteen a few days ago. She was only four years old when I came into her life. And she is already eighteen - it's an incredible shock for me and Lucy! Alexis is not going to be an actress, even though she loves and knows movies. She is a child familiar with the process of filmmaking, and it is likely that it will connect with their future profession. But she wants to work behind the camera, not in front of her."

    3-D Bourne

I am a through-and-through 3-D buff, but even I wouldn't go see a Bourne film in 3-D if Greengrass were responsible for the cinematography. Since 3-D is more immersive, it figures that those prone to motion sickness, vertigo or similar vision-related disturbances would suffer. China goofed on this one.

    Re: 3-D Bourne

Many can't watch the shaky camera even on the normal screen, even on TV. And here 3D.
Universal (and Matt, by the way, too) worsened the release of the film for several reasons, since date of release. If not all this, the box office could would be more.

    Bourne BO

    From THR:

"Overseas, however, it was Universal's Jason Bourne that likely ruled the late-summer roost with $56.8 million after opening to a stellar $50 million in China in its first six days, a series-best mark and already more than any previous Bourne film earned in the Middle Kingdom. Reuniting Matt Damon with director Paul Greengrass, Jason Bourne's worldwide total through Sunday is $347.9 million."

Bourne looks like a moderate success. Two years ago who would have thought that a wonky scientifically accurate movie about a stranded astronaut on Mars would make so much more than the return of Bourne? Whoever said "nobody knows anything" about the movie business sure nailed it!

    Bourne Box Office

Well, it's heartening to see JB has now made almost $348 million. Should be more, but at least it will be fairly profitable. Still could reach $400 or $450, but I'm not a prophet! Just hoping. Bet Matt has a back end on THIS film!

    Re: Bourne Box Office

For a movie with a production budget over $120 M. have profits, it should raise at least $400 M. theatrically.
J.B will reach that figure, basically because China.
It's underperforming in the U.S. due to several factors already discussed here (Foremost among them is the bad choice of the release date of the movie)
However, J.B. will make a profit. And probably end up collecting more than Ultimatum.
And you have to add to that the DVD sales, TV rights, etc.
    So, it will do OK.

PS: I wonder what happened to the idea of making a game based on the series.

I know they are joking but taking a jab at Matt Damon in interviews for a cheap laugh is getting old. I guess I am kind of sensitive to this because Matt has had a bit of trouble with PR in the last few months and "Jokes" from friends about him don't help.
mattdamoncolumn From: mattdamoncolumn Date: August 31st, 2016 01:39 am (UTC) (Link)
This one's just a joke from a close friend (as expected among the Clooney set).
From: iri_na_00 Date: August 31st, 2016 08:02 am (UTC) (Link)
It strains me a little too. We who watches closely life and Damon's creativity understand these jokes, but simple people take these jokes for the truth, unfortunately.

    Jokes

We can't enjoy life worrying constantly about what stupid people think. I remember a few years ago there were people commenting on Twitter and YouTube convinced that Matt and Kimmel's feud was "real", and that Matt was "mean". But that stuff was comedy gold! Eventually most people figure it out. And, in the end, they like Matt more for his great sense of humor.

Anyway, bashing on your friends is sooooo Boston. In that culture, it's the ultimate compliment. "Greater love hath no man, than he that bashes his friends." :)

    Great Wall

Very interesting Indiewire story about the different perceptions of Great Wall in the US and China. While China is hoping to use Matt to increase their industry's international box office clout, the whitewashing charge in the US is based almost entirely on its Anglo-centric advertising.
