Downsizing to open Venice Film Festival
  • Downsizing will be the opening night film at the Venice Film Festival on 30 August. Details at Variety.

Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing” will open this year’s Venice International Film Festival, Variety has learned. That coveted berth, on Aug. 30 against the unmistakable backdrop of Italy’s historic canals, puts the Paramount release at the top of this year’s buzziest offerings in the 2017 Oscars race.

The dark comedy centers on a man (played by Matt Damon) who wonders what his life would be like if he shrank himself. Laura Dern, Kirsten Wiig, Christoph Waltz and Jason Sudeikis round out the cast.

Venice has become a strong launching pad for awards season contenders. Last year, Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” premiered there on its way to Telluride, Toronto and 14 Oscar nominations. And in the last five years, two other Academy Awards Best Picture favorites –“Birdman,” in 2014, and “Gravity,” in 2013 — bowed in Venice.

“Downsizing” arrives in U.S. theaters in limited release on Dec. 22.

    Venice

And 6 out of the last 10 festival openers ended up with Oscar noms. Exciting, however it turns out. Mostly I'm just happy that Matt has continued to use his mojo to get interesting, unique projects like this one made. Hoping for the best!

Absolutely. Credit for an interesting but not quite there film over a formulaic movie or sequel every day. Someone (or more than one person) keep writing negative comments about the film on the Venice articles.

    Why limited release?

It's possible he's prepping for something that hasn't been announced yet. It's also possible that he's using workouts as a stress reliever.

    The Good Ole Boys

Unfortunately didn't know this in advance to announce it here, but yesterday Saturday, GET TV in the states aired at 5PM the Good Ole Boys. Matt's TNT TV movie from 1995 playing the role of Cotton. My parents caught it and told me they watched!
He was 25 yrs old. You can buy the DVD on amazon from Warner Archives.

    OMG!!!

That's hilarious! Lol, you think there are too many channels & not enough programming? Perhaps? So sorry I missed it. But maybe we can count on them to show that first TV movie he did with Brian Dennehy. "Rising Son" wasn't it called? Ha.

    Re: The Good Ole Boys

Agreed! Yup RISING SON, from 1990. It's such a good film, I own it on VHS, I wish they'd put it on DVD. His first lead role. Have you ever seen it Paula?

RE: Re: The Good Ole Boys

I haven't seen the whole thing. There was a promotional clip somewhere, probably YouTube. It was obvious even from those brief scenes what a good actor he was. And so young! He was in college at the time, wasn't he?

    Matt's mom

    http://bustedpencils.com/episode/episode-36-arent-talking
It's a conversation about mental health, he asked Nancy about mental health education in school. She had very interesting thoughts. She starts talking at 20:24.
At the beginning and end of her "interview", you can hear Matt, too.

    Downsizing

So many mixed messages and rumors about Downsizing. From a thread about possible Toronto films which also implies Suburbicon will be at Toronto.

    Kristopher Tapley‏@kristapley · Jul 15
Downsizing is virtually guaranteed. Payne loves it there. I know this and that. Gonna be a good one!

    RE: Downsizing

Variety predicted Downsizing would go to Telluride a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the Venice opening slot has caused them to reconsider where they are taking it? And what does Kris Tapley's "I know this and that" mean? Does he know Payne is taking it there or does he know it's gonna be a good one? Argh. Lol, all will be revealed.

I thought it meant he had heard good things about the movie (which nicely contrasts from other negative things about the finished movie from random tweeters).

Could be true. A writer was attached to the project a little while back (can't remember who).

The news has also reached our national news here in Denmark, and despite the talk of so much fake news I don't think they would run the story if it wasn't true.

    RE: Re: Robert F. Kennedy

This is a quote from a THR report about Jennifer Todd in March:

"Jennifer Todd, who currently serves as president of Pearl Street Films, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s film and television company, recently produced Live By Night and was an exec producer on Jason Bourne. Along with Michael DeLuca, she produced February's 89th Academy Awards. Her upcoming films include RFK, starring Damon, which Nikolaj Arcel wrote and will direct."

But there's no date attached to the project.

After such a long wait for this project to mover forward, it is good to see it come together for Matt.

    Suburbicon to premire in Venice

“Suburbicon,” starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Josh Brolin, and Oscar Isaac, looks set to be the second Paramount picture to launch from the Lido this year, after “Downsizing.” The studio has scheduled an October 27 U.S. release for “Suburbicon,”
