    Matt and Mark

Is there a feud between Matt and Mark Wahlberg or is it just that Wahlberg doesn't like Matt?

    Re: Matt and Mark

Not an easy response. Officially there's no feud, but it's pretty obvious they don't get along, mostly from Mark Wahlberg's side. (And therefore scenes in The Departed of Matt and Mark fighting are pretty ironic/juicy/accurate).

Even as recently as two weeks before the start of shooting on The Departed, Mark voiced how he would never choose to make a movie in Boston about a working class genius because he is "street" and that's how he would represent Boston. He's always claimed Matt and Ben weren't working class Boston and they've misrepresented the city. (Wahlberg, of course, has a criminal record of racial violence and fought his way through his youth and teens, including prison time.)

Matt and Mark broke through about the same time, and Matt would have always been represented as the Harvard-educated, smart and professional one, and Wahlberg was always the thug rapper turned model. That's probably one reason why Walberg has always seemed to have a real chip on his shoulder.

Things got more interesting around the time of Matt's break-up with Winona Ryder, where there was a tabloid claim that they broke up because Matt was obsessed with Wahlberg to the point where Matt was following him, always talking about him etc, and Winona got tired of this and ended the relationship. This was completely false, and Matt's publicist denied it saying she had been around Matt for the previous weeks while he promoted Ripley, and that he had never even mentioned Mark.

Around this time there's also rumors of Winona having an affair with Mark (and that's why Matt ended it).

Mark said a few years ago that he had no problems with Matt or Ben, and that they had met and he found Matt to be a nice guy. That was before he again made more claims (in 2005) knocking Matt for not being from the 'real' Boston - I think in a Details interview.

There's certainly never been any reports, even during the filming of The Departed, of Matt and Mark acting friendly towards each other or choosing to socialise together.

Matt only got the role of Linus in Ocean's Eleven when Walberg's filming on Planet of the Apes went long (and Matt was originally talked about for the Apes role).

And, coincidence or not, since O11 George and Matt have been close, and Mark has not been part of the George's clique at all (when he was formerly George's BFF).

    Re: Matt and Mark

Knowing this history beforehand I was surprised to see Mark actually willing to work with a man that he has bad mouthed on many occasions. Matt gave Walburg a birthday "surprise" as I recall. I figured no bad blood on Matt's part, perhaps a bit of eating crow on the latter's part.

    Re: Matt and Mark

I don't really remember any birthday surprise, and would doubt its authenticity.

    Re: Matt and Mark

Wow. Just *wow.* I never knew there was so much negative history between those two. In the back of my mind I knew that thing about Mark putting down GWH, but I had no idea there was such venom behind it.

The hardest thing for me to believe is that this fued is anything but one-sided. From what I've heard, Matt's the kind of guy who gets along with everyone, but Mark, you said Felicity, has a real chip on his shoulder and it shows. If in fact Matt does harbor such ill-feelings toward Mark, it's got to be for good reason. It's like the J-Lo thing. Matt initially said he had no problems with her when she was dating Ben, but then he came out saying she ruined his career. So before I would have said she was the only person he had a great dislike for, but I guess Mark can join her rank too.

Well, Matt may be a great actor, writer, producer, and all-around nice guy...but at least Mark can always put "Marky-Mark" on his resume. ~Can you feel it, baby? I can too.~ LOL

Thanks. I never realized when I asked the question what a load of history there is on this. I knew I could depend on you for the answer--and look at all the other comments! Thanks again, Felicity!

    Re: Matt and Mark

I have a vague memory that Mark congratulated Matt for not marrying an actress in a quote or an interview around the time of Matt's marriage. I can't remember where I saw it, it might have been here. MP

    Re: Matt and Mark

    Yes Mark did that.

    Re: Matt and Mark

Yes, but it was a very cursory/oblique statement in response to a question probably asked at a press conference or a general interview. It wasn't a personal response (like Greg Kinnear provided in the same Us article) and contained no meaning or personalisation.

    Matt & Mark

Thanks for the clear explanation. I can understand why there would be friction between the two of them from both sides. Whilst I am not a particular fan of Mark Wahlberg I think he has done some great things (Boogie Nights and Three Kings for instance) and that I understand that he is a reformed character - setting up his own foundation for young people etc. From the trailer he actually looks very good up against Matt - I'm looking forward to those scenes!
