Departed - press continues
  • From an interview with Leo at about.com:

Their characters are very much alike, however DiCaprio and Damon had to arrive at how to play them without the benefit of sharing much screen time.

"I think the working experience was interesting because it was almost like we were shooting two entirely different films," said DiCaprio. "Of course they intersected at moments, but they were two different films and they were entirely completely different experiences. It was interesting to intersect the different pieces and Marty [Scorsese] was the segue for that. ‘What was Matt doing in that scene and how does that affect me here?’ ‘Well, let's rewrite the entire scene then, okay?’ But the moments that I did have with him... He's an unbelievable actor, he really is. I enjoyed them."

  • From northjersey.com:

Matt Damon wanted to be part of "The Departed," Martin Scorsese's latest gangster thriller, for one simple reason: the chance to work with Scorsese.

Damon can still remember his excitement when his pal Brad Pitt tipped him off that Scorsese was directing a contemporary gangster flick for the first time since 1995's "Casino."

"It was like the dream of all dreams," says Damon, who turns 36 Oct. 8. "After Marty agreed to meet me, I didn't even try to be cool about it. I was like, 'I'm in.' It was a very easy yes for me."

Damon, whose mother worked in the Boston prison system, agrees with Scorsese's assessment. "As violent as this film is, none of that violence is gratuitous," says Damon. "All of the characters pay a price for the violence they inflict on each other -- and that's a good message to send out to people, as far as I'm concerned. There's a price to be paid for this kind of brutality."

  • From an interview with Scorsese at the Chicago Sun-Times:

It was a bit trippy for Scorsese to do a film set partially in the world of cops.

"I certainly felt comfortable in the street crime scenes with the guys," he says. "I do admit that during the police scenes, I did feel a little uncomfortable at first. But it was all in the script, and Matt Damon helped out a lot because he knew a lot of policemen.

"But I did get a little nervous like I was guilty for something," he says, laughing. "I thought, 'They're gonna take me in!'"

Do you have any idea of how much Matt got paid for The Departed and The Good Shepherd? Thank you.

For "The Departed" the actors are said to have been paid less than their normal rates to allow the project to get made. I think Matt's full rate would be around $15 million, but to work with Scorsese on this film he could have taken anything - $7-10 million maybe.

The total cost of the film is said to be huge (up to $200 million) but the actors probably signed on at a low rate and will take a percentage of the profits.

In a Fortune story a few months back, it was said that Matt took pay cuts for a few movies (Syriana and Departed), but will get fully reimbursed for "The Good Shepherd", which had a total cost of $110 million. I would guess it's around $12-15 million for about six months of solid work on that film. For Bourne it would be at least $15 million plus a percentage of the profits. It may even be higher.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the recent updates! I haven't commented lately, but I've been enjoying them all. I also hope we see some magazine covers of Matt for this movie b/c I've been missing them big time! Do you know of any that might be coming out?

Nothing at this stage. Jude Law's on the November GQ and George Clooney is on the November Vanity Fair cover. Details and Esquire are still possibilities, but Details had a Leo cover for October. Daniel Craig's on the next Premiere cover.

Of course, any magazine cover could also be delayed until December, when The Good Shepherd is released.

There may be a group Departed cover on the next EW.

The first we'll see on any cover is probably excerpts at Just Jared (who have already previewed Angelina Jolie's Vogue? cover for December to promote TGS).

The UK magazines are also a possibility (same day release of Departed with the US), but no word yet.

    Ebert and Roeper

Great to see last night that Kevin Smith (subbing for the ailing Roger Ebert) and Richard Roeper both gave "The Departed" two giant thumbs up. Both remarked Matt and Leo gave career-best performances, and they thought Jack Nicholson had also turned in a very good performance. In fact, they praised all the actors. There didn't seem to be a single quibble about the film, and Roeper said it was the best film he had seen this year. Pretty impressive. Can't wait to see it.

I came across an interview today with Nancy Carson, an agent who represented Matt and Ben when they were teens. Here's an excerpt from it:

Q: Do the more famous clients you've had show signs of their talent when they're kids?

A: Yes. Matt Damon was very nice. Ben Affleck brought him to me, said he has this friend who's very talented. I remember they had especially good manners. Very smart, even as teenagers.

    Here's a link to the whole article/interview:
