Praise, various
  • From an interview with Canadian actor J.C. Mackenzie at the Vancouver Sun:

And in the new movie "The Departed," opening this weekend, he plays the landlord of police mole Matt Damon.

Mackenzie also had high praise for Damon.

"He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met," he said. "He really is a mensch. He's so sweet. He was completely supportive."

  • Mackenzie is also quoted in the blog of Sun columnist Ann Marie McQueen:

Matt Damon: more than just a pretty face, chisled body, excellent actor, devoted father and husband and noted philanthropist, apparently.

J.C. Mackenzie grew up in Ottawa and has been supporting himself for 20 years as an actor. And he has a small role in Martin Scorcese's The Departed, which opens today, opposite Matt Damon.

He told me this week that unlike other actors he's worked with over the years, Damon is "a total sweetheart."

"Nicest guy on the planet," he said. "I am not exaggerating - he is the nicest guy on the planet."

  • This Daily Record 'article' claims to be a new story but actually a compilation of quotes from many sources - some a couple of years old.

  • Almost as good is this recycled story at Life and Style, which claims Matt and Ben are feuding again.

Longtime pals Ben Affleck, 34, and Matt Damon, 35, hit it big with their Oscar-winning film Good Will Hunting, but an insider says fame is tearing them apart.

"Matt and Ben just aren't seeing eye to eye lately," the insider tells LifeandStylemag.com. "Ben badly wants to make another film with Matt, and even though it's something they've talked about a lot over the last seven years [since they were co-leads in 1999's Dogma], Matt isn't keen on the idea at all at the moment."

Matt’s publicist denies the rift, saying, "They are genuinely the best of friends," and an insider close to Ben says their relationship is "as strong as ever."

But the insider claims that Matt has also forged a strong friendship with his Ocean's 13 co-star Don Cheadle, and the pair are discussing a number of projects they'd like to collaborate on.

"Matt and Don didn't really get close until they made Ocean's 12 in Europe in 2004 and had a bunch of scenes together," says the insider. "By the time they got around to doing 13, they were old pals and started talking about working more together in the future. They both want to do some low-budget projects next, probably as co-stars."

I have one word to describe that article from Life and Style: BS (granted, that's not actually a word, but I censored myself for you, Felicity) This is just pure, tabloidish crap. One needs only to look at them at the Hollywoodland and Feast premieres to know it's not true. These "reporters" have never been able to accept that two people such as them can be so close in the world of Hollyweird. Their frienship is too pure to be comprehended by people so low.

I'll never buy a copy of Life and Style again. Oh wait, I never have before! :D

I agree with above comments - Life and Style sounds like a cr*p mag. But I've heard the Matt & Don are close friends - so wanting to do something together wouldn't surprise me.

    the real bs is

"Matt and Ben just aren't seeing eye to eye lately," - not just lately

"their relationship is "as strong as ever." - bs!

Their relationship is strained and awkward. It's never rebounded back to what it once was. (I'm sure this makes you happier Felicity) I'm not sure I buy into Ben wanting to reunite with Matt either. He was scuffed by him for a while and's now doing his own thing. As much as I'm a fan of Matt, I think he's clearly too selfish to dare take a chance at anything coming between his precious career. (or so it seems) We just don't see these sides to him because his image is always "the nicest guy on the planet". As much as I'm a fan, I have to be real though.

If you really look at those pictures you look at major awkwardness and fake smiles for the cameras. There's alot of tension going on. Compare them to real pictures of when they were really happy years back. It's not the same.

    >"Matt and Ben just aren't seeing eye to eye lately," - not just lately

Well, ok, they've never seen eye to eye, but that's only because Matty's so short and Ben's one tall glass of water!

    >If you really look at those pictures you look at major awkwardness and >fake smiles for the cameras. There's alot of tension going on. Compare >them to real pictures of when they were really happy years back. It's not >the same.

I completely disagree. I think the last thing Matt and Ben are is fake with each other, and their friendship has never been something they've flaunted or faked for the cameras. I don't know either of them, but frankly, I think there's a real honesty in everything they say about each other and the looks the give each other. I don't think Matt was being fake when he said he loved Ben and he was going to be in his life forever. That's real love.

But this is the last time I'll talk about this, the article is too rediculous to give more attention to.

    Re: the real bs is

Also, Ben went to see Matt in Miami earlier this year - remember the pics at the restaurant and on Matt's terrace? Surely if they were only faking the friendship they wouldn't visit each other like that? Just an observation. Jan

    The Departed

Have just returned from seeing The Departed. A little slow about a third of the way through but on the whole an excellent film. Top rate acting all around. Matt did a brilliant job - you really hated his character. I can't say anything more without giving stuff away. For any of you reluctant to go because of the violence, when it does happen it is short with quick edits. I didn't have to cover my eyes - and I'm terribly squemish! It was good to see Matt and Mark Wahlberg together - the atmosphere between them is electric. Jan

    Re: The Departed

I also just returned from seeing The Departed. It was an excellent film. Everyone's acting was great. Jack Nicholson was superb and I really thought he was the star of the movie. Matt was wonderful in his role. Everyone hated his character. It is very violent. Mark Wahlberg was really good, too.

The Departed is Excellent, and Happy Birthday to the Nicest Guy on the Planet!

I saw The Departed tonight, and it was pretty much everything the reviews say it is -- definitely one of the best movies of the year so far. And as expected, Matt was great in it, as is everyone else who's in it, frankly. One of the reviewers said that Matt's character in this movie is something along the lines of an even more charming and more evil Tom Ripley, and I think that's exactly right. What I probably liked most was the way the film kept building suspense until the very end; the last 20-30 minutes are really exciting. Overall, a strong contender for multiple Oscar nominations, I'd say.

    Also? Happy Birthday, Matt! :-)

You're absolutely right. Colin Sullivan is more evil than Tom Ripley. You felt some sympathy for Ripley - but not for Colin! Jan
