Details interview, Actors Studio
  • Additional information (and a new photo) from the Details interview is at the site of Us magazine.

Actor Matt Damon, 36, has played many roles in his life: Spy hero in the Bourne franchise. Recalcitrant steed in the celebrated animated classic Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Ken to Ben Affleck’s Barbie.

But who is he, really? The December issue of Details cuts through the outer superficial crust, the hot mantle, and delves into the inner core of Planet Damon. And what do they find? That he gives boring interviews on purpose.

There are, however, some good contributions from Ben Affleck (wow – that felt strange), who says of his best bro forever: "If he does something he doesn’t like, it will stay with him. And if you bring up something he did 10 years ago, he’ll be like, ‘Ugh, I f—king hate that!’ Matt takes it harder than most."

Read what else Affleck, Angelina Jolie, and Robert DeNiro have to say about the actor in the new issue, and what Damon has to say for himself below:

    On being famous:
"I’d heard people say, ‘You’ll enjoy being famous for a week, and you’ll never enjoy it again.’ I don’t even feel like I had that week. I was so busy working that I didn’t even get to notice that moment."

On turning down the cover of Rolling Stone:
"Harvey [Weinstein] came to the set of Rounders and was yelling at me, going, ‘What the f--k is wrong with you? Did you ever think you’d be on the cover of Rolling Stone? And I said ‘Sure, I dreamed about it when I was a kid, but I’m already on the cover of nine other f--king magazines. My own grandmother told me she’s sick of seeing me. I can’t do this anymore."

  • Matt will be interviewed for James Lipton's Inside the Actor's Studio during the next season -details here.

New premieres will feature Eddie Murphy, Forest Whitaker, Matt Damon and Kyra Sedgwick as they sit down with host James Lipton to share their craft.

  • Matt wasn't named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive (and probably would have rejected the title if offered), but is one of the magazine's "men of the year" - from AP.

The magazine also names 12 "men of the year," including Pitt, Jamie Foxx, Patrick Dempsey, Matt Damon, Justin Timberlake and Daniel Craig.

  • In George's People interview about his new title, he drops in the very old (and tired) joke re Matt - from USA Today:

Still, he and his Hollywood pals vie for the title, teases Clooney, 45, who reveals his personal pick for Sexiest Man: Matt Damon. "This is a big disappointment for Matt, because he did run a very good campaign," says Clooney, cooing that Damon oozes sex appeal. "His eyes pop. They have a twinkle. He's got a good smile. He's quite the dancer."

Proving he's a good sport, Clooney also provided the mag with a 1997 photo of Damon in a snakeskin suit to boost his chances in coming years.

I don't mean this as Matt bashing because I LOVE him, but does anyone else feel like he sometimes comes off as a bit holier-than-thou in his interviews? No offense meant, just curious.

PS. Felicity if this bothers you, no need to post it! I'm not trying to start trouble.

I agree, especially with these latest quotes. However, they're all out of context at the moment and I'll wait to read the article to see how they're meant to be interpreted. For instance, the comment which seems to be a dig at a current movie - is that meant to be O13 or Ultimatum - presumably not Shepherd.

Matt's pretty clear in his dislike of the media, paparazzi, studio system and all its processes - but he needs all of them to survive in this business. He can't keep hiding away from the press all the time if he wants people to still be interested in him or his movie projects.

I also would like to see the full interview in Details. It's not published in this country (at least I've never seen it), the bits you've posted have bothered me as well but didn't want to say anything that would cause trouble. Without seeing the interview in full its hard to judge what points he's trying to make, perhaps he was just cranky that day, could be a new sleep deprived dad talking.

But the photo is fantastic, never seen him looking so good, his eyes really pop. I know he's been airbrushed to within an inch of his life but I still think he looks fab.

Also his line in the Legend of Bagger Vance isn't so bad. Not nearly as sick-making as the line in Love Story - 'being in love means never having to say you're sorry'. I wanted to shoot Ali Mcgraw in the head the minute she said it. He got off light. MP

Yes, I agree with all of the above. I've heard him talk about that line in Legend of Bagger Vance before and I just don't get why that bothers him so much. I really liked that movie and I think he is overally critical of it. He also looked really good in that movie and I personally thought his acting was some of his best.

I can't wait to buy the issue of Details to read the whole interview.

    >Ken to Ben Affleck’s Barbie

LOL!!! Best_comparison_ever, for both of them (considering some of Ben's drag tendencies). Defintely my favorite role of Matt's too. No matter what a great actor he is, no matter how much he's able to disappear into a character, he'll always be the cute little blonde boy from next door. He'll always be Matty Damon. I personally wouldn't have it any other way.

Oh, also, it's about time Matt got on 'Inside the Actor's Studio.' They need more actors like him to help regain the credibility the show once had.

Oh, and Felicity, could you tell me if it's US or Details that makes that snide little remark about Ben. I need to know which mag _not_ to buy. If it's Details, then I'm disappointed in them. If it's US, then I'm not surprised. :D
