    Letterman recap

Letterman was very giving in his introduction of Matt; he had nothing but pleasantries for Matt. He even went to the point of commenting on how well groomed Matt always is. During the interview, Matt and Dave spoke about events that had happened with Matt since his last visit: new marriage, new baby, etc. They spoke about Lucy being from Argentina and she has been teaching Matt to speak Spanish. Then Matt and cue card holder Tony exchanged a few words in Spanish and then (presumed to be rehearsed), Tony went mazurka, ranting in Spanish and throwing the cue cards in the air and storming off stage. Matt was tickled by it and said, “I don’t know what happened, I just told him I was practicing Spanish with my wife.” Letterman then was very anxious to set Matt up to do his Matthew McConaughey impression. However, first Dave thought it probably appropriate to get all the business out of the way in order to allow enough time give the impression the proper amount of time. Matt and Dave then talked about the movie and how it was to work with Angelina Jolie. Matt said he enjoyed very much working with Angelina and how beautiful she is. He also talked about the days Brad was on set or even Angelina for that matter, because the photographers were there in mass. They then showed a clip of the movie, a scene with Matt’s character interviewing John Turturro’s character; I thought the scene was very well played. Then once all the business was taken care of, Dave allowed Matt to present his impression, which you can see on the CBS or You Tube links. Dave congratulated Matt on his impression, new wife, baby, movie and the interview was over.

By the way, I love your site. I read it every day.

Matt's full interview is now available on Youtube (at least until it gets pulled by CBS-watch it quick!)

Almost immediately, Dave wanted Matt to do his Matthew McConaughey impression, but they got sidetracked by talking about Matt's personal life - getting married last year at this time at City Hall, having a baby, and Matt and Lucy wanting to raise the children bi-lingual, which prompted the spanish-speaking cue-card guy to talk to Matt in spanish. Matt replied (in spanish), and then the cue-card guy said something crazy in spanish and stormed off. It was a planned skit, of course, and it ended the first segment.

When they came back from the commercial break, they talked about "The Good Sheppard," about Angelina Jolie and Robert DeNiro, and then they showed a clip from the movie, which was really good, but in my opinion, it was a great scene for costar John Turtuuro more so than for Matt. Anyway, they finally got around to Matt doing his Matthew McC. impression, which was hilarious. Dave loved it, as did the audience.

As a follow-up question, did Matt stay for the Barbara Walters segment (and mention the Hugh Jackman lapdance)?

The second chair was empty when they came back from commercial to introduce Walters. I wondered if he would stick around to chide her about it, but I am guessing he had to head off to the premiere.

No, Matt left after his segment, but that's standard for all the guests on the Letterman show. You might be thinking of the Tonight Show, where guests often stick around and sit on the couch during the other guests' segments. Anyway, I'm afraid I only heard a little of Barbara Walters...she was talking about her "10 Most Fascinating People" show, so no, I don't think she mentioned the Hugh Jackman lap dance thing!

Lastly, just to fill you in since you apparently missed the whole show, Dave was extremely laudatory towards Matt at the beginning when he announced the guests on that night's show -- calling him a great actor, a humanitarian, a great all-around guy, etc., etc.... Laying it on thick(!), and obviously in an amusing way, but you can tell he really likes and respects Matt.

Thanks for the reports everyone - Letterman's not shown anymore in Australia but I've just seen the clips via youtube.

They really set up the McConaughey segment, but people seem to love it.

Matt's never been as open about his wife and family before, but Dave was asking pretty loaded questions. Good stuff.

I want to thank everyone as well, especially "Just Jared". I couldn't get the show here, either and am deeply grateful for the recaps and clips on "YouTube". It was all that and more!
