Back to New York
  • Matt's back in New York, presumably to resume filming The Bourne Ultimatum - a sighting from Gawker:

    Ed Norton & Matt Damon (808 Lexington Ave Jan 1st, 2007 @ 10pm)

Here's my first sighting of 2007: Ed Norton, Matt Damon, and a girlfriend (er, friend that's a girl) picking up food from Fig & Olive Uptown around 10:30 tonight. Laughing, looking very happy. Eddie paid like a good boy.

  • A Youth without youth mini-update from here. (Still don't believe me BM?)

A British tabloid published an article last summer about celebrities wanting to get this site closed down, because it's an invasion of their privacy, and it pinpoints exactly where they are in real time and could attract stalkers or other undesirables. It's a position I have some sympathy for, we're all entitled to go about our activities without being observed and having our every move posted to the web. I'm not criticising you posting it on here, obviously we're all interested in Matt and come here to see what he's up to. It's a personal thing I have with the site itself, it just makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable. MP

And George Clooney spoke about his objections to this site. I don't know if they're still posting real-time sightings - this one's obviously a few days old.

It's not a new concept (the instant celeb sightings) - there were phone companies encouraging New Yorkers to 'instant message' their celeb sightings to other users on the network - and that was years ago. It's a horrible concept and encourages stalking and I don't support that at all. Old sightings are different (to me at least).

There's no automatic right to privacy here and I'm guessing it's the same in the US. Most other European countries have a law like this and it's been mooted here a few times over the past few years, but so far nothing has come of it. Like you I don't mind if the sighting is a few days or weeks old. Gawker isn't I site I go to and like you said maybe they've made changes to it. I'd also read that George Clooney doesn't like this site and was trying to close it down. Thanks for your response. Glad we're on the same page with this. MP

To be clear - the thread above is about the gawker.com website.

    Inside the Actors Studio

I emailed the Performance Channel to ask if or when they intend to show Matt Damon's interview. Currently they have no plans to show it here, if anyone in the UK wants to know. MP

    Re: Inside the Actors Studio

I'm sure they will show it at some point - I don't know how recent the shows they are broadcasting now were recorded. I shall remain positive but not holding my breath for an impending date!

There is an article about Robert de Niro and The Good Shepeherd in today's London Evening Standard. Here is the link (I hope!) Jan

No SAG nomination for Matt :(

Although the Departed cast is nominated as a whole. Can't believe Leo is nominated for best actor and best supporting actor - what is it about this guy?! Someone tell me because I'm damned if I know. Will be interested to see how BAFTA nominate - though Good Shepherd is not eligible. I guess any Oscar nomination for Matt is out of the question - but I hope both films are nominated in best film and director categories.

I am interested to see that The Good Shepherd is in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. As far as I know, this is a pretty serious festival so let's hope it does well. Jan

I know this is an unpopular opinion on this site, but Leonardo DiCaprio is an excellent actor and keeps getting better with every role. He can play mature roles now. Evidently his fellow actors think he's pretty good, too. He also can show a great deal of vulnerablilty when he needs to in a role.

I would like to ask Island Boy if Half Nelson and Venus had big budgets to promote Ryan Gosling and Peter O'Toole for their SAG nominations. I have not seen either film but I know these were pretty low budget movies. Does a big campaign account for their nominations or did they give outstanding performances that impressed their peers? Or Jackie Earle Haley in Little Children? I haven't seen that film either but I know it was never released in very many theaters, so it couldn't have made a lot of money. I'm just trying to figure out how it works.

It's getting off-topic and I don't really want to go there, but Gosling and O'Toole were in the top six contenders for Best Actor for the last 9 months or more. It's not a surprise either were nominated. They were expected to have the pedigree, and they did. Jackie Earle Haley has also been pushed for quite a few people for a long while.

I think there's a fair element of "you're meant to be good, so I'm going to go along with that and think you're good too". Matt never had that support. And Leo has had all the momentum this year (somehow despite Blood Diamond's poor reviews and poor box-office).

    SNL clip

I was checking YouTube for possible Actor's Studio footage but instead found a clip from Matt's SNL appearence - Matt doing a Britney/Justin dance-off. Hysterical! Hope the link works! Jan

    Read all the comments --
    1) Leo IS a good actor - don't take anything away from him.
    2) As far as oscar goes, this maybe Peter O'Toole's year to get one. He is the one most deserving of all, IMO.

    Re: Oscar

I haven't seen Venus but I know that Peter O'Toole deserves one for his body of work. I agree about Leo. I've seen both of his movies this year and I take nothing away from him.

Now I'm pulling for The Informant for next year or whenever it comes out.
