Matt's Esquire Interview

Read the interview. Lovely full page picture of Matt sitting on the arm of a brown leather chair wearing Giorgio Armani (there's a very posh private school near where I live, very expensive, he looks like one of the head boys). Not much new info sadly, I like that he apologised for his untidy hotel room to the interviewer, who witters on about his good guy image and revamps how he and Minnie Driver created his alter ego Mike Smiley to keep the press at bay, and protect his private life. Discussed his life in New York at 16 with Ben living in an uncle's apartment mixing girls and alcohol.

Also tells of how he and Ben wrote a scene in GWH where Robin Williams gives Stellen Skarsgard a blow job in one scene and how it went unnoticed at Castle Rock through various rewrites each time becoming more graphic; when Harvey Weinstein bought the script he had two notes the second to remove that scene (you've probably heard it before, but it's new to me). He has a go at critics who think he is a blank using his favourite word. There's a rather pointless (in my view) Bond versus Bourne column.

There is also a really odd photograph, (I'm going to try and describe it but bear in mind I'm not a writer). He's struggling to hang onto a rail or bannister with his left hand with papers flying towards him (a wind machine was obviously used) holding a red phone to his right ear (an old-fashioned phone), there's a metal filing cabinet behind him and up on the wall to his right is a red sign with NO SMOKING in white letters on it he's wearing the same clothes as on the cover, I don't know what the photographer is trying to say, but I just don't get it. That's it. Marcia

Re: Matt's Esquire Interview

Thanks for the detailed report Marcia. I don't understand why journalists try the same tack in these interviews when they know he's going to share virtually nothing. Try a different approach or some new questions, because nothing much here appears to be unique (the story about the GWH scene is old, but hasn't been brought up in a while - usually about how Miramax cared enough about the script to notice).

But I do appreciate the summary - thank you.
