Ultimatum comments

I finally saw Ultimatum tonight and despite seeing hundreds of photos from the set, reading hundreds of reviews, knowing every major plot point and even the ending, I thought it was still brilliant. I was amazed by the pace from the opening scenes and first notes of the soundtrack, but even more amazed by the amount of mirroring scenes from earlier films. It's going to be fun to analyse Ultimatum against the previous two films and see how many scenes were original. Even Matt's green shirt at the end looked like it had been taken off the set of The Departed.

So brilliant in wrapping up every plot point, and I'm almost surprised that not more has been made of its very strong political overtones - it's a huge attack on current political events and the US presidency (or so says an Australian).

Re: Ultimatum comments

I'm so happy you liked the movie. Now you just have to see it a few more times to note all the things you missed the first time. :-) Was your theater crowded and how were their reactions to certain scenes?

Now you can go over and read at imdb.com. You'll be surprised how many people thought they were seeing things with the "Get some rest" scene. And of course there are those who say its boring, redundant, derivative, blahblahblah. And the shaky-cammers are a little outnumbered this time. Plus it puzzles me why people would see this movie without having seen the first two.

Oh well, I think I'll go see it again later today. Gotta keep those week-end numbers up and help it make $200 million domestic.

Re: Ultimatum comments

Thanks for your comments JJ. I've seen it now twice in two days and am quite satisfied for the time being. Some things certainly made more sense on second viewing and weren't quite so super-human.

The crowds weren't huge, but they were early evening sessions on Thursday and Friday. There's virtually no audience response in Australia, and no applause ever during a movie, but the scenes that got the most response were mostly those in the trailers.

I've avoided the IMDB board on Ultimatum for weeks because it's so negative and aggressive. I don't need to know everyone's individual complaints.

The Australian reviews have been very mixed, and some of the most negative reviews (mostly due to the camera work) that I've seen anywhere. It won't stop the crowds though, and Australia will still be have one of the best returns outside of the US and UK. Matt's appearance here three weeks before release won't help though, but it certainly raised awareness of the movie.

Ultimatum is expected to make $200 million by Tuesday.
