Matt drops out of The Fighter, Tanzania photo
  • Matt will no longer be involved with Darren Aronofsky's boxing project The Fighter, with the role now to be played by Brad Pitt. Details at Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

Pitt will replace Matt Damon, who had been looking forward to a reteam with Wahlberg, his co-star in "The Departed" and a fellow Bostonian. Damon just had too many projects on his dance card to make the film on the schedule Par wanted.

It's believed Damon gave his blessing to Pitt, his co-star in the "Ocean's Eleven" film series.

Pitt is putting on the gloves that were to have been filled by Matt Damon, who had to bow out because of scheduling conflicts.

  • The Rock says he now only wants action roles up to the level of the Bourne movies - details here:

Wrestler-turned-movie star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is taking a break from action movies because Matt Damon has set the bar too high after his Jason Bourne films. Johnson was tipped to become the next Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger when he started his movie career with The Mummy franchise and spin-off The Scorpion King, but he admits action films have become a little lame and the scripts have to be better. He says, "I love action movies but with what Matt Damon was able to do with the Bourne series and how kick-ass those movies were, he raised the bar. "Whatever material comes in, if it's not that, then I'm not doing it. That's the goal."

  • Another report on the OneXOne event from In Style.

Matt Damon also teamed up with his Ocean's Thriteen co-star Don Cheadle to catch the premiere of Brad Pitt's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford at the Elgin Theatre. The busy Damon also hosted the second annual OneXOne gala ito fight poverty and preserve the lives of children around the world, where he was agained joined by Cheadle and Duchess Sarah Ferguson. Ben Affleck helped Damon auction off items like a tennis lesson with Andy Roddick and a trip to South Africa. Matt and Ben kept up their best buddy schtick to entertain the bidders. "People say: 'You're a lot taller than I thought,'" Matt quipped about how the fans react to Affleck. And what do they say to Damon? "People say, 'You're a lot smarter than I thought,'" Affleck quipped.

I'm hoping that means that Matt will be available for Paul Greengrass' The Green Zone.

I still don't think he's going to do Green Zone, but he's definitely clearing out his projects - two dropped off this week.

I hope he does Green Zone as I finished the book this week and think it would be a fantastic project, but I think it would require a greater commitment than Matt is willing to give at the moment.

I'm glad he's still doing "The Informant" as I had sold, but then rebought hsx.com stock in the movie back when it had fallen low and now it's on the rise again.

But, do you what I wish Matt would make? A light rom-com, a nice May-December romance with someone like Michelle Pfeiffer.

I'm really sorry he's not doing The Fighter. It will probably turn into an awards filled film. I'm sure we will see a lot of it at the 2009 Oscars. And I just can't see Tobey Maguire in The Brothers. I'll stick to the Danish version.

But I understand he cannot do every film that is offered to him. I'm glad he's taking some time off right now for his family.

Too bad about fighter, I know many matt fans didn't want to see it happen, which is fine. If he is going to be doing an even better movie in replace of it then i am all for it.

I have to agree with the rock, the bourne films have set a high bar for actions movies.

    Thanks for the news -Jess

The only thing IMDB shows for future projects for Matt is Imperial Life in the Emerald City. But from the sounds of it he has a lot more projects going on. Does anyone know what other movies he may be planning?

Only The Informant is confirmed (April 15 start date for director Steven Soderbergh). The other possible projects are the Gus Van Sant film about Harvey Milk and Imperial Life in the Emerald City with Paul Greengrass.

This is not a diss of Matt, only a huge grin at the dose of reality smackin' us in the face! LOL! I would have loved to have seen Matt work with Mark on The Fighter. But, reality is, The Fighter would mean some serious working out, getting and *staying* in shape. Not that Matt owes the audience anything, but a viewer can tell when an actor/actress is not putting out 100%. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Bourne movies, but there are parts in Ultimatum where I squint my eyes and feel that he's just not all there (and only mildly disappointed that he had no scenes sans shirt). Hey, I had my second kid at 36, and it is absolutely amazing how much energy a child can zap out of his/her mommy & daddy! And we had a lovely support network to fall back on, like it appears Matt & company have. So I think Matt's making a good choice, even though it makes me frown a little... I hope he keeps his plate relatively clean for a while. The kids don't stay little for long.

Well I can't say I'm sad that Matt has dropped out of The Fighter. The Green Zone film will be more of a disappointment if in the end he doesn't do that.

Thanks again Felicity for all the updates. Jan

    New project

Here's an unlikely sounding new project to add to the mix. And Matt has been constantly saying that he wants to work with Clint Eastwood. From today's Variety... It's an appealing project with Eastwood and Freeman, and set in South Africa, but Matt as a Springbok rugby captain?

    http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117972666.html?categoryid=1236&cs=1

A movie about how the 1995 Rugby World Cup helped heal post-apartheid race relations in South Africa is fast becoming a major film event.
Morgan Freeman had already signed on to play Nelson Mandela in "The Human Factor," an adaptation of the John Carlin book "The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed the World." Now, Warner Bros. is in talks to finance the picture, with Clint Eastwood eyeing it as a directing vehicle, and Matt Damon in preliminary talks to play the captain of the Springboks.

    Re: New project

Matt would be playing Francois Pienaar, shown in the article linked below receiving the trophy from Mandela.

Pienaar was a flanker, so it's possible. He also studied law after winning an athletic scholarship, and was a strong spokesman during the period.
