Sexy Matt gives props to QB/QT

Reluctant sex god Matt Damon was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive yesterday, an honor he tried to defer to another local hunk, New England Patriots QB/QT Tom Brady]!

"He’s like a taller, better-looking version of me anyway," Damon wrote in a letter to People actually declining the Sexiest honors. "Plus he's the best quarterback in the history of football. Plus he does terrific work in Africa with the folks I work with at DATA and ONE. Plus he might be the most genuinely kind person in the public eye. Plus he dates Gisele Bundchen who, needless to say, looks almost as hot as my wife in Victoria’s Secret."

As impassioned as his argument was, it didn’t work. Damon is on the cover of the new People and has assumed the crown from last year’s two-time Sexiest Man Alive, George Clooney.

And modesty too, apparently. Because here’s what the totally sexy, 37-year-old Cambridge homey, ex-Harvard man and new dad had to say about People’s props.

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime," Damon wrote. "My 9-year-old stepdaughter now thinks I’m cool - well, cooler."

But, he added, "I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that this is a mantle I wasn’t meant to hold . . . Don’t get me wrong, though. I was really shocked and happy (wife) Lucy said I actually blushed when I heard the news so I can't thank you enough for that."

Damon's "Ocean's Eleven," "Twelve" and "Thirteen" co-stars Clooney and Brad Pitt (another two-time SMA) openly campaigned for Matty to be this year’s coverboy.

Clooney joked that he first realized that Damon was the man for the SMA "sash and tiara" when he saw Damon don that infamous green Speedo in "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

"Not since Halle Berry coming out of the water in the Bond film has there been such sexiness," he jabbed.

Added Affleck: "I’ve known Matt for 27 years and being Sexiest is the only thing he's ever truly cared about... For a guy like Matt, 4'1", 295 lbs. it’s a heck of an achievement. Congratulations, Matt! You did it!"

  • From a story at USA Today about how talk show host Jimmy Kimmel would enjoy being the SMA winner:

Damon, who is the cover boy of People's Sexiest Man Alive issue (on stands Friday), might be a modest recipient of the title. "Who the hell wants to read an exposé about some guarded actor who didn't get the memo and keeps refusing to answer really basic questions?" Damon says, adding that the magazine might have a better issue with someone else on the cover.

  • Other original quotes and reports are at the Boston Globe, which also has a photo gallery of Matt through the years here, E Online, the New York Observer and another report at E Online, including:

We definitely think Damon is adorable in a let's-go-to-a-Red-Sox-game-together sort of way. But sexy? We weren't so sure.

That is, until we read the letter he sent back to the mag declining the offer. He opted to pass on the title because "it would mean some extra unwanted attention on my little ones," and "I just don't think I'd be much fun."

Awww, our hearts are melting. He closes with, "I can't thank you enough. You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime."

And with that, we are officially won over. Matt is the sexiest man ever!

  • The text from the People article is now available on their website, but only to subscribers here. Can anybody help provide some of the text? Thanks. Here's the first paragraph:

Yes, George Clooney and Brad Pitt have shamelessly campaigned for him since 2001, but this year's winner was Bourne to the title. Named America's most bankable star by Forbes, the golden boy with the crooked smile is smart, charming and humble to boot. "You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime," wrote Damon, 37, in a letter to PEOPLE, explaining why he couldn't possibly accept the crown.

I still think this sexiest man alive thing is silly, but as everyone, including Matt, seems to be taking it lightly and with humour, then heck, why not? Congrats to Matty!

The quotes from that infamous letter are hilarious :-))).
"Plus he dates Gisele Bundchen who, needless to say, looks almost as hot as my wife in Victoria’s Secret." hahaha, that's a good one Matt... Also love Clooney's sash and tiara and the green speedo comments :-))). I guess he'll start teasing him about it from now on...
I wonder what Matt says in the rest of the letter, hmmm...

On a more serious note, I've noticed that you've deleted the release date for Margaret from the calendar. Are there problems with the release yet again or what's up with that?

It was never confirmed the film was opening on that date and there's been absolutely zilch mentions of it in the media to suggest that it would open on 23 November - apart from rumors that the opening is still another 8 months away. Mystery project.

    People.com Article

    Copied from the People.com website:

Matt Damon: The Sexiest Man Alive

Yes, George Clooney and Brad Pitt have shamelessly campaigned for him since 2001, but this year's winner was Bourne to the title. Named America's most bankable star by Forbes, the golden boy with the crooked smile is smart, charming and humble to boot. "You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime," wrote Damon, 37, in a letter to PEOPLE, explaining why he couldn't possibly accept the crown.

Unfortunately for him, his gambit backfired, because the letter – which we've reprinted, with his permission, on the next page – perfectly demonstrates many of the reasons we chose him in the first place: irresistible sense of humor, rock-solid family man (he and wife Luciana have two daughters), heart-melting humility. And to bolster our case even more, we called in for backup from former title-holders Clooney and Ben Affleck, who also offer their insights into why – like it or not – Damon is this year's Sexiest Man Alive.
First off, I must say I was floored when I heard you guys voted me the Sexiest Man Alive for 2007. I guess all the campaigning finally paid off. Ditching Clooney as a campaign manager and going with Brad for the final push was an emotional decision, but I knew it was going to be tight and the youth vote was going to make or break me. So, thanks for making my political calculus look so sound.

Unfortunately, after all those years out on the trail, the meet and greets, the fund-raisers, the stump speeches, I've finally come to terms with the fact that this is a mantle I wasn't meant to hold. The main problem for me in accepting an award like this is that when I do interviews they are to promote a project I'm involved with. So if the questions get too personal, I can always say, "Sorry, I'll pass on that one, I'd rather talk about Bourne 18: Jason Meets Freddy," or whatever.

This interview would be to promote, well, me. And as shameless a self-promoter as I am, invariably the questions will turn toward things like fatherhood, and although this is my favorite topic in private (in fact, I rarely shut up about it), it would mean some extra unwanted attention on my little ones. I'm really trying to give them as little of the celebrity stuff as I can.
So ultimately, I think you wouldn't get as good an issue as you might with someone else. I mean, who the hell wants to read an exposé about some guarded actor who didn't get the memo and keeps refusing to answer really basic questions?

The point is, if you agree to participate in something like this then you have to have some fun with it and I just don't think I'd be much fun.

Don't get me wrong, though. I was really shocked and happy (Lucy said I actually blushed) when I heard the news. So I can't thank you enough for that.

You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime. My 9-year-old step¬daughter now thinks I'm cool – well, cooler – and although the rest of the world will remain in the dark about this, my wife now knows she's married to almost the sexiest guy alive. And that fact alone may get me out of doing the dishes once in a while . . .

    See you down the road,
    MATTY

    Re: People.com Article

Many thanks for posting the letter.

The Australian magazine 'Who' has a shortened version of the People issue, including the responses by George and Ben. Ben's is useless because it's a 'humorous' take (all made up) and not one serious word. (Matt said some great things about Ben in his SMA article.)

George, however, mixes it up, including:

Q:How would you describe his brand of sexiness?
A: The three sexiest qualities are both of his eyes and he's got a good smile. A good, wholesome, all-American smile.

    Q: What's special about Matt?
A: He's smart as a whip, he's incredibly talented, he's the nicest, kindest actor and person I know. But all those qualities pale in comparison to his sexiness.

Q: What about Matt as a father?
A: He's phenomenal. He's absolutely adores those kids. He's doing it really well.

Yeah, but to be fair, outside Ben's SMA article, Matt really ripped on Ben for his title, knowing that Ben was obviously a little embarrassed about it. You need only watch the first season of Project Greenlight to see that. And as for a humorous take on the whole thing, come on, it's a humorous award. "Sexiest Man Alive" is the most ridiculous title, at least I've always thought so. "Sexiest celebrity currently popular & bankable" would be a more appropriate title. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Matt got it, but only because any time I get to see his face on a magazine is a good time to me. And harkening back to the good ole project greenlight days, that 4'11'' comment was great in connection to Ben's comment made years ago about there being an 'under six foot' category. high-larious

    Re: People.com Article

To me, it's just the difference in the two of them. Ben plays the fool, Matt plays it for keeps, with heart (and humour on the side).

I'm not doubting it's a ridiculous award, but the general public seems to care about it.

    Re: People.com Article

Agreed. It's a Yin & Yang dynamic they have going on--two different things but they fit together just right.

And don't get me started about the 'general public.' The general public hasn't had half the appreciation for Matt's quality work that they should have...but still, I have to agree with you on that count as well.

    Re: People.com Article

That letter was heart warming; no wonder People refused to accept "no" for an answer.

I didn't like Ben's comment at all. Ben has to get over that they're not *MattandBen* anymore but Matt. And Ben. That's all I'll say about that.

    Re: People.com Article

Matt knew that the letter would be published. He always knew that they would declare him SMA no matter what he said. The letter was brilliant. He knows how to handle his image. The smartest man in show business.

And Ben's comments were hilarious. I do not think that Ben considers himself attached to Matt in any way except that they are long time friends. Have you seen Gone Baby Gone? Enough said.

That is the hottest picture ever of Matt. That should have been on the cover of People. Then there wouldn't be as many people saying they picked the wrong guy. He does have beautiful blue eyes but that picture shouts MOVIE STAR!
