Green Zone casting, filming begins
  • Green Zone casting details from Variety.

Director Paul Greengrass has set Amy Ryan and Greg Kinnear to star alongside Matt Damon in the untitled Iraq war thriller that begins shooting today in Spain for Universal Pictures.

Greengrass and Brian Helgeland turned the premise into a fictional thriller set in the "Green Zone," a walled and fortified area where U.S. troops stay during the Iraq occupation. There, critics say, flawed decisions are made because leaders are separated from the realities of life in war-torn Iraq.

Damon plays an officer who teams with a senior CIA officer to search for evidence of weapons of mass destruction. Ryan will play a New York Times foreign correspondent sent to Iraq to investigate the U.S. government's WMD claims. Kinnear plays another CIA officer. Antoni Corone has been cast as a colonel.

  • There's an interview (including a video) with Matt's trainer Robert Severiano here, which refers to Green Zone.

Severiano spoke to CBS4's Lisa Petrillo and told her he's been training Matt Damon for a while.

He's training for a new upcoming film called "Imperial Life in the Emerald City", in which he plays a soldier, so he needs a bulkier looks and arms of a soldier.

  • Reports on the second day of filming for The People Speak in Boston are at the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe.

  • This type of story is usually false, but here it is... from Contact Music, via The Sun:

    Damon leaves $4,000 tip

Big-hearted actor MATT DAMON surprised staff at a Miami, Florida coffee shop -after leaving a $4,000 (GBP2,000) tip. The actor ordered a coffee at posh eaterie Ago costing $5 (GBP2.50), but decided to give the employees an extra bonus. A source tells British newspaper The Sun, "It was incredible. The staff were stunned."

  • The Matt/Lucy/Robert Downey Jr and wife Susan photos will be included/featured in the upcoming Us magazine, reports the Miami Herald.

    Damon leaves $4,000 tip

If it's reported in The Sun I'm certain it isn't true. One of the UK's tackiest tabloids. Marcia

And there's a follow-up report by an equally dodgy source with some additional details. However, it is a place that Matt does frequent...

Matt is a very generous man! I wish i could hand out $4000 to anyone that i feel deserves it.

It will be nice to see how matt looks on the bulkier side. i wonder when pictures will start to surface from the movie set.

I hope everyone is having a great new year so far!

    Thanks - Jess

The current role is Matt's leaner, 'soldier' look.

I don't think we're going to get many photos from the set. They're currently filming at a remote former military base, and the other locations in Spain and Morocco are very unlikely to be heavily populated areas or paparazzi hotspots. It could be a long time before photos emerge, unfortunately.

But there may be a chance that Matt is going to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland (of all things)...
