More interviews, Elysium

  • A long interview with Bonnie Laufer is available at Matt talks about his character in Happy Feet 2, the "awesome" Neill Blomkamp, and screenwriting. Part of the interview is available as text at Flicks and bits:

Earlier in your career you won an Oscar for writing a screenplay, is screenwriting something you’re looking to get back into?

Matt Damon: I’ve thought about it. I haven’t felt like a haven’t been writing for the past twelve years, there’s so much crossover with all the different jobs. Even though I don’t get credit for writing I feel like that part of me is fulfilled, that part of creating is fulfilled because if you’re working in a really great environment, the writer, the director, everybody is there just to come up with the best ideas, the best ways of doing things. It’s a very fluid, creative and great process…..and a shared process.

That’s what it felt like when I was writing with Ben Affleck, it was thinking of the best way to come up with each scene, and that’s what I do everyday so I still feel like that part of my being is engaged everyday at work. But having said that I do miss the quiet of sitting down and writing. I talked to Scott Burns about it last night, he said that there is something nice about going first, because you frame the whole thing. I haven’t gone first in a while, I always come in when the template is already there, I just do a bit of adornment (laughs).

  • The trailer for American Teacher, narrated by Matt, is available here.

  • A long junket interview is at Extra, where Matt talks more about his character in Elysium.

  • A late Vancouver sighting from People:

On a break from filming his new sci-fi movie Elysium, Matt Damon visited one of Vancouver's most popular attractions with his family: the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park. The actor, wife Luciana and their kids were spotted checking out treetop views from all over the park and enjoying the nice weather.

  • A junket interview from Bob Thompson:

Matt Damon is proud to say he's "rocking" his new shaved-head look.

"Inspiration can strike at any time," says a smiling Damon, looking over at a bald Steven Soderbergh during a news conference for their latest collaboration, Contagion.

Soderbergh denies he's put a spell on Damon, but the director admits he does like to pique his interest with acting challenges.

Besides, Damon's new look is really for the Neill Blomkamp sci-fi film, Elysium, which he's shooting in Vancouver over the next four months.

And while there are some references to government control as the global pandemic intensifies in Contagion, Damon insists that little should be inferred from the fact that his guy borrows a neighbour's shotgun when police protection breaks down.

"I was very aware, in the second act, that this is taking place," Damon says, then jokes, "That would usually be about where the zombies would come, and you're going to want a gun for that. I don't care who you are."
