Three Oscars for Bourne Ultimatum, Kimmel response
  • The Bourne Ultimatum won the three Academy Awards it was nominated for - details here, with a full list of winners here. The leading film, No Country For Old Men, only received a total of four Oscars. Casey Affleck, George Clooney and Amy Ryan did not win in their nominated categories.

The Bourne Ultimatum, the Matt Damon thriller that many thought was overlooked because of its late-summer release, took three Oscars: film editing, sound editing and sound mixing.

Sound Editing winner: "The Bourne Ultimatum" (Universal) Karen Baker Landers and Per Hallberg

Sound Mixing winner: "The Bourne Ultimatum" (Universal) Scott Millan, David Parker and Kirk Francis

Film Editing winner: "The Bourne Ultimatum" (Universal) Christopher Rouse

  • Editor Christopher Rouse included Matt in his acceptance speech - a report is here. Last year Matt was recognised in Martin Scorsese's acceptance speech.

Christopher Rouse: Forty-eight years ago, my father was privileged enough to receive an Oscar, and I'm deeply, deeply honored that you put me in his company tonight. To the brilliant Paul Greengrass, to Frank Marshall, thank you, thank you, thank you. To everybody in post-production, led by my good friend and colleague, Mark Fitzgerald, each and every one of you share in this award with me. To Universal Pictures, to the Academy, my deepest, deepest thanks. To the amazing Matt Damon, thank you. And to my family, especially Anne, Anno, Ava and Fiona. My kids, I love you. Thank you so, so much.

  • A report on the Jimmy Kimmel/Ben Affleck et al response to the Sarah Silverman/Matt video is at the Huffington Post. First to have the clip online was Perez Hilton.

    Matt/Saras was too good.
    Kimmels response was ok.
From: (Anonymous) Date: February 25th, 2008 11:26 am (UTC) (Link)
Kimmel's response with Ben was a good idea, but I find it sleazy whereas Matt / Sarah was playful and funny. Having all those celebs show up for the spoof on "We Are the World" was funny until they opened their mouths - most of them were off key and it ended up being painful to watch.

    My humble opinion. :o)

I don't know whether or not you're old enough to remember, Maureen, but most of the people who sang "We are the World" were off key. For example, two words: Cyndi Lauper

Sorry, Felicity I just had to say that. :D

Not a problem. I think the Ben video is crap, mostly because there's no decent song, it's actually not funny and borderline offensive, and Ben comes off as sleazy to me also.

Lots of stars, but they're jumping on a bandwagon they've got no business to be on.
From: sunnysanstar Date: February 26th, 2008 01:10 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks, hon. But, I'm sensing you...didn't like it? :b Well, I thought it was great, but I won't be surprised if the bloom is gone from the rose in a few days. It's just like what you said about the Matt/Sarah one: after some time it won't be as funny as it first seemed.

I agree with you, Felicity. I mean, who's Kimmel's retort supposed to hurt? Matt? He and Ben, despite people insisting to the contrary, arent' lovers. Sarah? Well, now she knows and it's a good thing she got a bit of Matt before the truth came out.

If Kimmel couldn't have done it as minimally as Sarah, all the disguised Brad Pittes and Robin Williamses in the world won't help. Sleazy is a good word for it. That strolling along in short-shorts with hands in each others back pockets? Just...no.

We'll see the hit count on youtube for Kimmel's as opposed to Sarah's to determine who's is best.

All in good fun. It's a good show of friendship to poke fun at each other like that (pun intended).

Thats awesome that Bourne won three oscars.

I thought the kimmel/affleck clip was very funny but it didn't top the matt/sarah one. I thought it was funny how many celebrities they got involved, including robin williams. I wonder what Matt thinks of the video...

    Have a good one, -Jess

Congrats to Bourne for the 3 Oscars! Whodathunkit, huh? At least not me! *blushes*

I loved the Jimmy/Ben video... great stuff! Great to see Ben play along with the joke!

I was so happy that Bourne Ultimatum swept the awards it was nominated for. Watching as that film got the awards that it did, made the evening feel a little less shorter. And it was wonderful that Matt was included in an acceptance speech.

I'm absolutely ga-ga over Jimmy's response. All the celebrity faces I'd heard was going to be in it, all those I didn't (Brad Pitt as the Fed Ex man!). And I'm convinced there's no one in the world who has a better sense of humour than Ben...god, I love him. I'd have to say this video is better than Matt/Sarah's. Not for lack of Matt's comedic skills, certainly, but because Jimmy's video was such a brazen act of one-up-man-ship. Just too funny.

ROFL -ah Matty. You see, this is what happens when you f*ck someone else's girl. lol I nearly flipped my wig when I saw Harrison Ford blowing kisses--we're talking freaking Hans Solo here.
The scene of Jimmy and Ben by the window--so tender, too tender. Damn you Jimmy, you fight dirty. Matt, clearly, it's time to pull those gloves off. For the love of god-- Kimmel's got Ben in daisy dukes--you can't let him go out like THAT.

From: sunnysanstar Date: February 27th, 2008 01:03 am (UTC) (Link)
Kinda makes you wonder if Matt's going to have some kind of retaliation, doesn't it? It wasn't playing fair, showing that while Jimmy knew darn well Matt was out of the country. Jimmy's clearly afraid of having a real 'throw down' with Matt, and he should be. And as for the daisy dukes, I have a feeling Ben already had a pair; he's just that kind of guy.

can't help myself but I was quite dissapointed with the oscar outcomes... but well at least "Bourne Ultimatum" got what it deserves ~ 3 of the golden boys. congrats on that success.

thanks Christopher Rouse for your great speech and showin respect to all the other people of the BU team. well done!

re the Jimmy "the fool" Kimmel stuff...
I go with the Perez statement "this was pretty good, but not as good as the original!"
    you are damn right.

hell yeah! Sarahs/Matts one was unique and simply brilliant! thx Matt for your comedic talent. keep it up!

but anyway... congrats Jimmmy... what a lousy overdone idea to react. how ingenious to involve a bunch of hollywood stars to let them act like fools and present that whole poor performance as YOUR response. I take my hat off to you! *applause*
but pls pls pls try to hit the core of anyones humour in an intellectual sort of way next time.

I really don't care anymore, but if you want to read some stories about people congratulating themselves on the so-called brilliance of the new Kimmel clip, here's a selection:

Ben demonstrates his desperate need for attention (and affection) in an interview with EW about the video.

    What was Matt's reaction?
He e-mailed me. He thought it was hysterical. Like me, he thought it was almost surreal to see all these people, one after another, but that's what makes it really funny.
mattdamoncolumn From: mattdamoncolumn Date: February 28th, 2008 09:58 am (UTC) (Link)
And to keep my solo posts going, here's another good reason to dislike the Ben video, apart from the smugness of the participants, their self-promotion strategies and individual acts of crudity. Yep, the offensive gay stereotypes in the video.

From: (Anonymous) Date: February 28th, 2008 08:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
A round of applause to Jim David for speaking up. Exactly!

As for EW's interview with Affleck - he talks enough for two pages about how great he is and even alludes to having come up with the idea first. What did Matt say about the Sarah vid? Something along the lines of it being a lot of fun. END of Matt speech.

From: sunnysanstar Date: February 28th, 2008 10:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
I appreciate that you keep posting these links Felicity, even if I disagree with you personal opinions & assmuptions about the sort of person Ben is. You run a wonderful site & you try to keep it as factual & and non bias as possible. Most television news anchors can't said of the same.

And that's the reason this is my last post on this thread. I just have to say that is one of the most pathetic articles I've ever seen. Just like the articles that are overly praising the video (it was funny, but it's not the 'be all and end all') this one takes ridicoulessness to new heights. That man is reaching into the stratesphere to find things not PC. A yellow car, mixed drinks, good lord! Nail painting & hair drying, for shame! And you know, even if it were not PC, who cares? It's joke, get over yourself. It's not homophobic. If Matt and Sarah had walked around in shorts, hands in each other's pockets, would anyone have made a peep? There's your real homophobia. And I don't think Ben would ever do anything that's homophobic. He a gay rights activist, for crying out loud. This guy needs to get over himself.

I'm sorry to go off on a rant there, Felicity, I truly am. But please recognize that I only do it because I respect you, the information you provide, and the freedom you've given me to post here. Like I wrote before, I won't be posting on this thread again. Please, bring on the good news. :)

I don't agree with a lot of the article, but it's sentiments are in the right place. I do find the video awfully childish and full of stereotypes, but that's the base level of humor which it was going for (and hit the spot). The lowest common denominator usually wins with the public, so Ben's behaviour is perfect. Ben can claim activism, but his actions have previously failed his words and I don't forgive him for that.

    End of saga.

And if there was any movie news to report, or good Matt-related news of any kind, I'd love to report that. 'Green Zone' apparently has another month to film in the media dark hole known as Morocco (particularly Rabat and Oarzaoute).
From: (Anonymous) Date: February 29th, 2008 05:11 pm (UTC) (Link)

    Matt in Morocco. Margaret

    Another whole month? Oh, dear.

Can anybody make any intelligent assumptions about the movie on the basis of this looooong stay in Morocco?

Anyway, here's a little something from the Jeffrey Wells' site about Margaret. Maybe we'll eventually actually see it. http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/archives/2008/02/where_is_margar.php
From: (Anonymous) Date: February 29th, 2008 08:35 pm (UTC) (Link)

    Re: Matt in Morocco. Margaret

The comments section on the Wells' site has some interesting observations from people who claim to know something about the film, although of course we can't know if they're just yahoos talking out of their hats. I'm desperate for any info at this point.

    Re: Matt in Morocco. Margaret

And the original article which spurned the Hollywood Elsewhere story is at CHUD (slightly different info):

The movie has been taken off the official Fox Searchlight website for months - on the old version of the site it still says the release date is "TBD 2007".

"Bourne Ultimatum" Up for Saturn Awards

Perhaps not the most prestiguous of awards, but none the less, "Bourne Ultimatum" is up for best action movie and best director for the sci-fi related Saturn awards. Here's a URL that mentions it: "http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2008/02/21/list-of-nominees-for-34th-annual-saturn-awards/ -- Take care, Cheryl

Sometimes less is more--that's why I like Matt's video better. Kimmel tried to add in too many people and scenes and just went overboard--it was very disjointed. Matt's followed the storyline and got the hilarious message across. Both were good, but Matt's ruled!
