Ben to direct
  • It is reported today that Ben will direct his adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel Gone, Baby, Gone in Boston later this year. Matt mentioned at one stage that he may be co-writing the adaptation, but Ben appears to have sole credit. Matt is likely to still be a producer on the project.

Good luck to Ben. Maybe directing, not acting, is his destiny.

I don't know. He seems to really have fallen off the horse. I think you need to be a a decent actor to have some sense of where to take your actors, when you are directing. Anyway I hope he doesn't tear the book apart, because it's really good. Good Luck to him (he'll need it)

    Ben as a Director

I agree, but I still wish him luck.

Ben will do a great job directing...people need to give him a break. A couple bad choices don't mean that he's a bad actor...this is exciting though, it will give him the chance to try something new...and if matts along for the ride, we know it can't be that bad!

    Is his acting that bad?

I actually think that Ben's acting is somewhat decent. Perhaps, as previously noted, it is not his calling. I am not so sure about the comment that it takes a good or decent actor to be a good director. Whatever his vision of the project is, a good actor will be able to connect and deliver (assuming it is good material). I am anxious to see how it all turns out.

    Ben directing

Whether people think Ben can direct or not is moot since it hasn't happened before and we have no idea. What he *does* have, in spades, is passion. And I think that will take him miles and miles if he works with it. I know, from personal experience, it can move mountains.

    Opinions About Ben

You know it really bugs me when people make judgments on Ben and decide for themselves what he's capable of based on his worst movies. And it just seems like that only happens with him. He can't be a director because of Gigli or Surviving Christmas (which I happen to think Ben was the best part of). But Armageddon, Chasing Amy and The Sum of All Fears aren't even considered. And the fact that he co-wrote an Oscar-winning screenplay doesn't even seem to matter anymore as far as his professional credits go. But no one does that with anyone else. Good people do make bad choices. Oliver Stone made Alexander. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan made Joe Versus the Volcano. John Cusack, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones and like 100 other people were in America's Sweethearts which was a big pile of dog crap. But no one has said that any of the people in those movies have no career left. As a matter of fact, three of those people have Oscars for really good choices. And as far as good directors being good actors, I can think of a handful that insist on being in the movies they direct when you just wish they wouldn't.

Everyone just seems to think that Ben's the goofy, somewhat-simple best friend that goes along for the ride. He was in the right place at the right time in a couple instances but other than that...nothing. But has anyone bothering to listen to him when he talks? Cause the guy is really smart. It's just a shame that there are so many people out there who are unwilling to correct their biased opinions for whatever reason.

I, for one, think Ben is going to do really well with this next step of his. He has the writing ability. He has the brains. And, like someone else pointed out, he has the passion. Points to him for going after what he wants and not listening to ignorant opinions.

    Re: Opinions About Ben

I think that doing this movie away from Matt would be good. Not to say anything bad about Matt but at various times it seems like they have lived in each other's shadows.

    Re: Opinions About Ben

All of you seem to be taking my criticism the wrong way. He is intelligent I will say that, especially during the last election when he was interviewed by O'Reilly, he definitely held his own. I guess my point was that I don't feel as an actor he is thoughtful enough to play the role to its full potential. He seems to touch the surface of the character and never really go any deeper. Matt on the other hand does, and last time I remebered this website was dedicated to Matt not Ben. Ben is more of a movie star, which is great but this will be a great change of pace for him to direct this film, and the book is really good, I recommend it. I hope he just forgets about the paycheck and does good work, like Matt :)

    Re: Opinions About Ben

I hope he does do well, but it seems like everyone still loves him. I just think that maybe this should be Matt's year. I am kind of tired of hearing about Ben's crazy nights. I am more interested in seeing Matt being recognized by people more than Ben. Everyone loves him already.

Re: you're not showing up in the searches

Apparently only the first 500 people with that interest show up in the directory. Although I've always had 'matt damon' listed, I must be too far down the list for it to show up in searches. So it is there but nobody can see it. :-(

Re: you're not showing up in the searches

There's only about some 400+ on the list (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=matt+damon) right now, but you can go to this link and click on (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?mode=add&intid=18667)If you're also interested in this and would like to be added to this list, click here and it should add you there.

Re: you're not showing up in the searches

Thanks - I've tried that multiple times over an extended period and it still won't add me to the list. There's 130 communities and 441 users - well above their combined 500 limit.

    never thought Ben was bad

It's easy to put people down or openly criticize when one does so anonymously. ;)

I, for the record, never mentioned Ben's acting skills, or lack thereof. I actually enjoy his acting. The only movies I have seen him in that make me think, "Cheesy," are Daredevil and Good Will Hunting. I liked Casey more in that than Ben! In any case, I think he is ruggedly handsome and I LOVE his height...I think he is beyond intelligent and has a VERY good chance at directing like a champ!

As someone said, this *is* the Matt Damon site and I am sure Matty would be proud of Ben in anything Ben is proud of doing.

Oh, yeah, Pearl Harbor was a bit cheesy, but he was so fuggin' cute I was able to let that go no problem.

To the person who wants this site on a searchable list within lj, I'll email her(the creator of the site) and let her know in case she misses your comment. :)

    This is great news!

    Yeah Ben!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I think this is just what Ben needs. A chance to really streach himself artistically. Plus he will be so busy with making a movie he won't have time to gamble all day. I think that is reallyreally bad for him. He and Matt are so cute, I just want to lick them both. :p Yum Yum Yummy Yum Yum
