Im soooo happy for Matt. Im a little surprised for the Invictus nomination, but I think he has a good chance at winning for the Informant! Although I still dont think he will get any Oscar noms, it's nice to see him get some recognition.

Absolutely. The Globes were his best chance of being nominated for a major award (at least for The Informant). So happy he's going to the party, even though he would be very unlikely to win either category. After years of being snubbed for worthy roles, this is great news.

    Other nominations

Morgan Freeman (Actor, Drama) and Clint Eastwood (Director) were nominated (but Invictus was not).

Marvin Hamlisch (Best Score) was nominated for The Informant.

Emily Blunt was nominated for The Young Victoria.

George Clooney was nominated for Up in the air.

Penelope Cruz was nominated for Nine.

I know a lot of the nominations are a joke, but hey, at least Matt's among the contenders this year.

Yeah, I agree that the Globes are kind of silly, but I'm pleased for his recognition.

The best part is that he'll go, and we'll get to see more of him!

And I'm definitely not counting him out come Oscar time.

Me either, Paula. I have my fingers crossed for a supporting actor Oscar. Clap your hands if you believe!

Just had to comment that I was able to see the film today... and it made my soul so happy. At the end I didn't want to leave and just kept hanging on, watching all the credits. I can't quite explain my feeling. But as the lights came up I saw that almost everyone else in the theatre was also still there, just not wanting to let go.

That never happened to me before.

    Re: Invictus

That's great Paula. I've read of a number of reactions like that. Hopefully the award nominations will help the film find a larger audience.

Matt hasn't given the press any interviews or quotes about the nominations. Others have:

    No inside information
Her fiancé, John Krasinksi, read the list, so did Blunt have any inside scoop on her nomination for The Young Victoria?
"Oh, my God, none. None whatsoever, I promise," Blunt said.
She is wrapping up shooting in New York on The Adjustment Bureau, opposite fellow nominee Matt Damon (The Informant! and Invictus). "I can't believe he stole my thunder by being given a double header," Blunt said.
First item on Blunt's agenda when she wraps the film? Ending the diet she has been on to play a ballerina. "It's going to be carnage. This slimness is going out the window."

They were joking about it on the set of "The Adjustment Bureau," where freshly minted Globes nominee Emily Blunt was working with Matt Damon, who scored a double whammy Tuesday with nominations for the comedy "The Informant!" and the drama "Invictus."
"I'm working with Matt today, who's got a doubleheader," Blunt said with a laugh, "so I just gave him hell because he's apparently trying to steal my thunder. He's the worst."

Morgan Freeman, nominated for best Actor, Drama for “Invictus”
“I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this tremendous honor. Congratulations to Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon on their nominations, and I extend my deepest gratitude to my producing partner Lori McCreary, and the entire cast and crew of ‘Invictus’ for their tireless work to make a film befitting of Nelson Mandela’s legacy. Playing Mandela was the greatest honor of my career, and I hope that I have done him proud.”

    Golden Globes

I knew it.Matt's performance in The Informant was outstanding and also he has high praises for his work in Invictus,so it's not a surprise to me.And I still believe in his chances to get an Oscar nomination for Invictus.

Whether or not they lead to wins, the nominations are fantastic! The fact that they are for two very different roles only goes to prove the range of his talent. Too often, his more nuanced performances are overlooked. However, with "Invictus" and "The Informant" coming out within months of each other, the industry and press can contrast the performances easily, and the only conclusion one can arrive at is that he is an extraordinarily gifted actor.

Matt was nominated for best supporting actor for Invictus. Im happy he is getting recognition, and he is great in the movie, but the role isnt really anything special. He will now probably get an Oscar nomination, but it will be one for his years work and really for Invictus.
