Oscars prep, Green Zone promotion
  • In an interview with a Paris radio station, reported at Premiere.fr, Matt says he will be attending the Oscars with Lucy, Lucy's mother, and stepdaughter Alexia. Matt says Alexia wants to see all the stars on the red carpet. Matt will also be a presenter at the Oscars.

  • A very interesting long video interview with Matt and Paul Greengrass interviewing each other is at Sky.com (UK). The first topic is Greengrass getting flak for attending the Arsenal/Chelsea game with Matt. A long print interview with Greengrass is at Coming Soon. Matt and Paul's interview with Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo on BBC's Radio 5 will air today.

  • The trade reviews of Green Zone at Variety and the Hollywood Reporter are positive, particularly the latter:

Bottom Line: An energetic, frenzied thriller -- Paul Greengrass-style -- set in Iraq in the chaotic post-invasion days.

In "Green Zone," director Paul Greengrass brings the frenetic, run-and-gun style with which he utterly transformed the movie thriller in the Jason Bourne series to a different kind of thriller, one with a sharper political edge.

Damon, in motion the entire movie, acts as a magnet, drawing every detail of the story and its character into his orbit. Although there might be a touch of naivete to his character's determination to ferret out the truth, there is a Jimmy Stewart aspect, too. He positively will not let anyone, no matter where he belongs in the chain of command or how far "off the reservation" his character drifts, stand in the way of the truth.

That chaos tips over into the action of the movie as the film hurtles from one destination to another in a race against time. John Powell's propulsive music eggs the action ever forward, and Christopher Rouse's rapid-fire editing nervously stitches the stunts, chases, fights and confrontations together. It's a remarkable film.

  • A photo and quotes from Matt's interview on Letterman (which airs today) are at the Boston Herald.

    Letterman appearance

The Letterman interview is now available in two parts on YouTube, thanks to LateNightLetterman:

It's a lot of fun. Matt seems relaxed and happy, and it's a stark contrast to his most recent time on the show to promote The Informant when everything was a little disjointed. Very smiley appearance.

For any football fans... Is the line about Tom Brady performing in big games (which really cracked Dave up) a reference to how the Patriots lost in their last game of the season?

I watched Paul Greengrass on BBC2 Newsnight Review last night. A really fascinating interview. The panel discussion of the movie afterward was also very interesting. Quite a range of views were heard. I would recommend it. BBC iplayer doesn't work outside of Europe, but someone will probably download it to youtube sooner or later. I would recommend you watch it.

Paul discussed how the war in Iraq influenced the film and also expressed his view on the war very passionately (which I love). His views maybe controversial to some, but in the UK at least many feel that the decision to topple Saddam Hussein was based on distorted intelligence (deliberate or otherwise), and many view the war as illegal, from the right to the left. The Chilcott Inquiry which is going on at the moment is trying to sort out the steps that were taken that led to the UK going to war, and interviewing everyone involved in the process including Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. The British people support the British soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and back them 100%; it was the political leadership who lied to the population.

Delete my comment when you've read it. I know your blog isn't for political comments.

I know nothing about American football so the reason why he's wearing that shirt on the David Letterman show is completely lost on me. Marcia

Thank you Marcia - I'll try to find the interview.

The jumper I can understand. He's friends with Anthony Mackie, an actor who's in The Adjustment Bureau, and a New Orleans native. Mackie's a strong New Orleans Saints supporter (NFL), and he and Matt bet on the team who would be the Super Bowl winner this year (with Matt supporting the New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady). And New Orleans won, so Matt had to wear the Saints jumper on Letterman (a great punishment if you support a rival team).

I don't know if the reference was as much about Brady as it was about Peyton Manning (Colts quarterback) who is probably the greatest 'big game' quarterback to have ever played. But, I'm not an expert on football.

Did the youtube version include Dave's casual intro, when he talked about Matt? He said Matt was 'the trifecta'; a fine actor, terric movie star and great guy. He also said that if he had Matt's looks and personality "You could all kiss my ass." Lol. I's too bad, though, that Dave dwelt so much on Invictus instead of the new movie.

There's an amusing youtube clip about Matt from the Bonnie Hunt Show when she's interviewing Amy Ryan (the audio and video are messed up, unfortunately) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75UTwmB00EY

The YouTube clip does have the introduction (the show won't air in Australia until Monday night).

A good interview at The Times:

And Matt attended a star-studded pre-Oscar party on Friday night in LA hosted by his agents (also there - Ben and Jennifer):

    Sunday Times Culture Magazine Interview

A really good read. Also a lovely photograph of Matt in the hard copy of the magazine, which I'm looking at as I type this.

He's taking self-depracation to new heights though! Thanks for the details on the American football shirt, makes a lot more sense to me now. Marcia
