Bourne 4 moves ahead
  • Universal has announced that Tony Gilroy will write the fourth movie in the Bourne series. Matt and Paul Greengrass are unlikely to participate in this film, with some of the issues detailed at The Playlist.

Universal on Wednesday officially announced the continuation of its “Bourne” franchise, with Tony Gilroy signed to write the fourth installment, “The Bourne Legacy.”

Matt Damon, star of the first three installments, has yet to commit to the next film, which Universal hopes to release in 2012. Likewise, Paul Greengrass, who directed the last two installments, has not signed on. Both have been asked by Universal to come on board, but both have publicly stated that they don't intend to.

An official close to Universal said the studio still hopes to enlist both, but is moving forward as if they are not going to be involved.

A Universal release said Gilroy -- who penned the first three "Bourne" scripts -- has been signed on to write a treatment for the fourth film, as well as a "bible" for the franchise.

I think that before Matt the role was offered to Brad Pitt. Now(with all due respect)I don't see Brad as Jason Bourne. And unless they make BIG changes in the character of Bourne will be difficult to see someone else in that role, because it has too much of Matt in it.

It would not surprise me - since Gilroy is supposedly going to handle both the script and the "Bible" for the franchise - if he does two things: one, write a movie as if Matt (not necessarily Paul) is returning. I know it appears that Matt won't do the movie without Paul, but if the studio is going ahead and writing a fourth installment with Jason Bourne, then they'll likely take their chances that they can get a script that Matt loves and a director that Matt loves.

Two, since Matt himself has suggested that the franchise may go the "prequel" route for the fourth installment, Gilroy may prepare those characters in the franchise "Bible" for that scenario, so if Matt/Paul say no to participating, the preparation for a prequel script and its characters will be ready to go.

I want to comment on a couple of things posted on the previous thread about this:
"And Matt will have more loyalty to George Nolfi, who wrote a previous version of the script, than Gilroy. Wonder if it all depends on whether The Adjustment Bureau works."
I am not sure we can say yet what loyalty Matt has to Nolfi. When EW did their preview of TAB, Matt's quote - (Matt Damon just laughs. ''If the director can't answer that question,'' he says, ''I don't know what to say, other than it's a really tough movie to pitch.'') - made me ears perk up. He may have just been making a comment that didn't translate well, but then lo and behold, shortly after that the movie was taken off the summer roster and reshoots were scheduled. With all the 'net comments (like on Movieline) about people trying to help with TAB reshoots only because they like Matt so much - Nolfi is considered by some to be in way over his head as a director - Matt may just have to mark TAB up as a learning experience and Nolfi won't be on his director's list anymore. (However, since I am a sci-fi buff, I really hope TAB turns out well after the reshoots).

Con't... sorry I have a lot to say about this :-)

    Other comments:

"It has been said many times that Matt is a character actor who became a moviestar because of Bourne and I get the felling he would be more than happy to just be Matt Damon-actor, not Matt Damon-moviestar."

"I don't think he would care about the money, or if the other films he's making aren't bankable."
I know Matt has said many times that he realizes that his time as a successful actor will inevitably come to an end, and he is prepared for that and prepared to segue into other things (directing and consistent character roles). I agree that I don't think he cares about the money, but what he does seem to care about are the scripts. But...If Matt isn't bankable anymore, he's not going to get the quality of scripts offered to him that he wants, because his name will no longer assist a project in being greenlighted into production. If Matt hadn't been Jason Bourne, then The Informant, which he and Soderbergh had been wanting to make for several years because of the script, would have never gotten off the ground. I think some of the movies Matt has been in have been approved for bigger budgets and cost overruns (Informant, Green Zone) simply because he's in them. That won't happen if he's not bankable.

If you read deadline.com or any movie industry site regularly, you'll see that the very type of movie Matt loves - the adult-aimed drama that doesn't necessarily have a happy ending - is the exact movie that Hollywood is fiercely rejecting right now. Several movies of this genre have been cancelled this year after they've already started production. Eventually there will be a backlash to the stupid movies being put out now (IMO it's already begun) and some adult movies will come back, but not right now. There's little money being offered by financiers to make these movies.

I think there's a chance that if Matt experiences that feeling of not being able to make RFK or Liberace or Ben's Yankee movie simply because Matt wants to - remember, he and Ben have the production company to think about now as well - then he may reconsider his stance on the kind of movies he makes. That's not to say I think he will make a fourth Bourne movie...but if TAB fails and Hereafter doesn't do business (and it will be seen as a Matt failure even though it's a supporting role, because he's the biggest star in it), then I think Matt will have to face a different power and status reality than he's faced in the past six or seven years. I don't think he'll even know if he's fine with that unless it actually happens.

George Clooney, who seems to have the same taste in films as Matt, didn't get his production deal renewed last year. Why? Because George Clooney films, in general, don't make money even though he's an excellent actor. He did get signed somewhere else, but apparently many people feel it was a "vanity" move by a new studio head who needed the credibility of a big name and the deal will expire in the next couple of years if George doesn't get himself a hit.

Matt is only 39 years old and he said the best roles are for men age 40 to 50. If he can't have access to those roles or get studio money for them, well... we'll see if he's actually OK with that. He may end up realizing that's there a happy medium between being forced to do stupid stuff like Batman #17 and doing almost-too-esoteric stuff like Liberace.

Finally, there are a number of young male actors who would love to "take over" Matt's script offerings. And he may do well to remember that nearly everybody he started with (Norton, O'Donnell, Fraser, Hawke, etc.) never quite made it to real stardom and choice in roles. Look at the dreck Adrien Brody is doing right now. Matt, like the tortoise, has overcome them all. Is he willing to give that up yet?

I wish Matt had taken the part in Avatar. Then he wouldn't have to worry about Bourne ever again and do whatever he wants LOL

    Female Director for Bourne movie

I actually think a new Bourne movie would be well served by hiring a female director -- perhaps the director that helmed the Hurt Locker movie. Also, I don't believe Matt has been in a picture with a female director -- might be a good change of pace for him.
