Matt Damon News Column
Hereafter at NY Film Festival
  • Hereafter will be the closing night film at the New York Film Festival on 10 October - details from the festival site here. The program director also discussed the film at the Hollywood Reporter. As the NY premiere is listed as the US premiere, the film will also premiere at either Venice or Toronto.

    Closing night
    Clint Eastwood, 2010, USA, 126m
Another entirely surprising film from a director who, at 80, remains at the peak of his powers, Clint Eastwood's Hereafter explores the possibility of establishing connections with loved ones who have passed on-an enterprise marked by skepticism as well an adventurous sense of hope. An engrossing, nuanced ensemble piece with a cast headed by the excellent Matt Damon and Cécile de France, the script by Peter Morgan (The Queen, NYFF 2006) unfolds three intersecting stories as it entertains the idea that alternate realms of consciousness might exist apart from the life we all know. Filmed in France, England, San Francisco and Hawaii, Hereafter is made with the consummate skill and confident grace one expects from Hollywood's most enduring and honored veteran. But it also exhibits the energy and curiosity of an ever-young mind still striving to tackle the eternal mysteries of life and death. U.S. Premiere. A Warner Bros. release.

"As so beautifully evident in 'Hereafter,' Clint Eastwood continues to make the most daring, provocative films in America. With his returned appearance here in the New York Film Festival, the director has showcased an opening night film, a centerpiece film and now this year's closing night with 'Hereafter,' a 'hat trick' of which we are especially proud," Richard Pena, selection committee chair and program director, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, said.

  • Michael Douglas is undergoing treatment for throat cancer, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Really looking forward to seeing this movie. Do you know when it will be released in Australia?

    Re: Hereafter

I can't find any release information for Australia, only January 2011 for Germany and Spain. So I would say anytime from December onwards.

    Happy Feet 2

Matt and Brad Pitt's roles in Happy Feet 2 have been revealed:

George Miller couldn't show any clips from Animal Logic's Happy Feet 2, but revealed that Pink would compose "epic" songs for the film and Matt Damon and Brad Pitt would voice "tiny krill".

The Hereafter screening at the Toronto Film Festival has been confirmed.

I feel kind of bad for both Ben and Matt re: Toronto. Both are now going to have their films debut there during the festival, so each will be asked about the other in every media availability. Not to mention that Casey's Joaquin Phoenix "film" is now also scheduled for Toronto (and for release one week ahead of Ben's film), so they will be asked about that too ("Is it real?"). It will look odd if Ben and Matt don't attend the screening/red carpet and comment on the film, especially if Casey's off-screen news hasn't been resolved by then.

I guess it's good that The Adjustment Bureau was moved again from releasing the same day as The Town, at least. That would have been awful, as box-office comparisons between the two films would have never ended.

I'm glad they are all friends, but it would be nice if all of them could keep their projects separate from each other in the media/public eye unless they are working on them together. Ben, in particular, has a lot riding on his project to change public perception as a box-office draw.

Agreed. There's going to be a lot of Ben/Matt/Casey talk in the next couple of months. But nice that Matt was encouraging Clint to employ Casey (and Josh Brolin and Christian Bale) if he couldn't do the role in Hereafter. There's no question of Casey's acting talent.

Here's the detailed synopsis from the Toronto website:

Ben doesn't seem to mind talking about Matt - lookee here. She brings it up but he extends the Matt-centered convo (twice).

With Michael Douglas' illness I'm thinking Liberace won't get made anytime soon if at all.

And Im sure Matt and Ben are happy to talk about each others projects. Matt has been talking about the Town for a while now. They are used to having to talk about each other. I'm sure they don't care anymore.

Agreed on Douglas - that's why I included the story. It seems like a project that will never get made (and Matt is already 20 years too old for the character he's playing).

    Re: Hawaii photos

Matt is still pretty massive with his Invictus weight. I think he looks good with "some" weight on him, but I wonder if he is going to slim down some.

    Re: Hawaii photos

It's not Invictus weight - there's been a few losses and gains since. He has to start filming in a month or so, but it probably won't matter for a small role as a suburban husband. And the weight probably won't matter for 'We bought a zoo' if that goes ahead early next year (but the bald head mix probably won't be too good).

    Re: Hawaii photos

I'm betting that Matt won't shave his head for the role. I mean they have already made a major change of setting the movie in America, so the fact that he doesn't have a shaved head won't be a big deal.

    We bought a zoo

Have you seen any confirmation they are filming in the US? It appears that way as the casting for the children is US-based (although it stated that the filming location was unknown). I think location info on one site appeared to be Thousand Oaks, California (but that could just be office info).

And they've already changed the names and number of the kids in the script.

A new TV report from Sky News with the first live footage I've seen of the animals at the zoo. The story's based on the Sun article and the hope that the film can save the zoo:

Whoa, Matty is going on 30 Rock like that? The camera adds 15 lbs. He'll be as big as Alec Baldwin! Lol.

In front of a live audience the greatest speeches of ordinary people that changed the course of history will be delivered by accomplished actors and personalities.
