More casting news
  • Elle Fanning and Patrick Fugit have been added to the cast of We bought a zoo. Fugit's role as a zoo worker was revealed at The Wrap. Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna appears to confirm a January start date for the film in a new interview.

  • Scarlett Johansson's role was confirmed in the Deadline story as being Kelly, another worker at the zoo. Ben Mee on the Dartmoor Zoo Twitter broke the news that Stephanie Szostak will be playing a role (most likely as Katherine, Ben's wife).

  • Excerpts of an interview with Matt at Hello Canada are at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

On life with a new baby
"We're definitely still euphoric. But in terms of juggling responsibilities, you're going, 'I'll do that. No problem, I'll do that.' After a week you go, 'Wait a minute! We have to figure out a plan here.' The girls are all different ages and so they all require different things. It's a lot of running around."

    On adjusting to 4 kids
"It's been pretty crazy! The baby came a couple of weeks early. It's our fourth, so we've done it before - but it's a whole new dynamic. It'll take a little getting used to. [But] the other girls are happy to have their little sister, so it's amazing."

    On being a family man
"Yeah, but it didn't seem like much of a choice. I moved and suddenly it wasn't just my wife. It was her 4-year-old little girl - who's now 12. There was never a choice. It was just the way it was, and I was happy for that. It was very different, it's true, but I can't imagine my life having not gone down that road. I can't imagine what my life would be now. I don't want to imagine it."

    Extreme Close-up - Australia

For Australian readers - Matt's the subject of a new show on E! airing tonight titled 'Extreme Close-Up' (8.30pm). There's great interview and behind the scenes footage interspersed with comments from media types including Ben Lyons. It will be repeated over the next week.

It's probably aired previously in the US and UK.

Interesting comment at one point - Matt saying acting has never been a job and he's enjoyed every role except for one, where he said he shouldn't have taken the role. Bagger Vance as romantic lead?

The show also include fantastic quotes from video interviews with so many co-stars and others over the years: Clint, Robin Williams, Anthony Minghella, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie (saying he should run for public office), Ben Affleck, Olivia Wilde, Morgan Freeman.

There was also video of Matt over the years saying he will direct (the first in 2001), and side by side video of Matt and De Niro discussing their method acting techniques. The show included footage and interviews from premieres and events up to the New York junket for Hereafter.

Cute footage: Matt at the Venice Film Festival in 1998(?) saying he can't believe all the journos are there to speak to him, and Matt having to be told to turn on a microphone at an early press conference. Also, Matt at the baseball celebrity match taking a photo of journalists in the room, and footage from the interview with Jules Asner where he says his mother would never say she is proud of him, and instead would say she 'affirms him'.

    Re: Extreme Close-up - Australia

    And more stuff...

At the end Matt talked about how he wore the same boots for many (13?) years because he was upset a journalist called them 'dorky' in an interview. Sadly, the boots have now been replaced with a similar pair.

The theme of the show was how Matt has maintained artistic credibility through intelligent choices and not selling out. Other footage included Matt talking about how he had yet to be recognised as an actor, and Matt greeting very enthusiastically Jon Voight, Robert Duvall and John Turturro at early premieres. In an interview after the Oscars Matt talked about being recognised and how he could never have a bad day when complete strangers came up to him and gave him compliments.

While there was lots of footage of Matt and Lucy at premieres, she was never mentioned by name (and the show didn't ever get gossipy, as would be expected on E!).

    Re: Extreme Close-up - Australia

Thanks Froggy, on our Sky +, haven't watched it yet, will do it at the weekend when I have more time to relax and enjoy it uninterrupted :)

Thanks for the highlights Felicity, just whetted my appetite. Can now breathe a sigh of relief that Scarlett Johansson is in a supporting role in We Bought a Zoo. Dreadful actress. Marcia

    Re: Extreme Close-up - Australia

As far as I know nothing about Matt like the 'Extreme Close-up' show has aired on US TV. If it has, I haven't seen it. I'm jealous of you who have seen it - it sounds great! But it seems to me that Australians "get" Matt more than a lot of Hollywood types. You guys appreciate his down to earth "bloke-iness". For every good US interview with Matt I must have sat through a dozen with clueless reporters who would rather have been interviewing Lindsey Lohan. Ugh!

Maybe there's a chance it'll be available on the internet?

    Re: Extreme Close-up - Australia

Journos and fans like him but he's pretty much no longer in any magazines. He misses the 'teen/reality show' or the 'revered old folks' dynamic and is now prety much ignored.

Baby news is always the standard to watch. For baby number one we had lengthy exclusive reports in two magazines. Baby number two had a lot less info, but still a paragraph or so. Baby number three got one line in the dispatch section.

I dont think Katie is interviewing Matt for Glamore but for her own @katiecouric on cbs.com. It will be a video interview.

The text should still be on the site. The full text of other interviews promoted on that site with Couric is available online (glamour.com).

    Hereafter film

For those of you that have not seen Hereafter, it is definitely a must see movie. I liked it because it is caters to a more thinking audience and it makes one think about life, the future, and everything we need to be grateful for. Thank you Clint Eastwood for making an excellent introspective movie and thank you Matt Damon for giving the part enough angst and compassion.

Beautiful, beautiful girls, but I'm a little confused;which one is Isabella and which one is Gia?.They're almost the same size now and sooo alike, that I can't distinguish between the two of them.
mattdamoncolumn From: mattdamoncolumn Date: November 12th, 2010 04:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Gia's on top of the stroller, and Isabella may be in the base of the stroller. Lucy seems to be carrying Stella and the friend's carrying her own child. I think.

I thought Isabella was on the stoller, the friend carried Gia and it was Alexia in the bottom of the stroller - too big to be one of the little ones...but yeah, so hard to tell! Just a blur of beauties...;)

    EW, Katie Couric

The short EW interview is now line, but the print article may be longer:

And just posted by Katie Couric on Twitter (which seems to confirm it's a print and not TV interview):

katiecouric: About to interview Matt Damon for my next @glamourdotcom column! He does such great work!

It's probably a compliment? People matched Matt to his animal equivalent:

    Re: EW, Katie Couric

Thanks for the update - what a strange, short interview that ended up being posted online. And nothing specifically about True Grit.
