Joel Siegel Award
  • Matt will be presented with the Joel Siegel Award for his humanitarian work at the upcoming Critics Choice Movie Awards. Details at the LA Times, EW, and this official press release. The awards will be held in Los Angeles on 14 January.

The BFCA may have snubbed Matt Damon's supporting performance in "True Grit" but they will be feting him at their Jan. 14 Critics Choice kudofest with the Joel Seigel award for his humanitarian efforts, including being a co-founder of Water.org which brings clean drinking water to developing countries. In making the announcement BFCA president Joey Berlin said, "Matt understands, as Joel did, that the true value of celebrity is as an enhanced platform to do good works for others.”

"Matt personifies the values celebrated by the Joel Siegel Award," says BFCA President Joey Berlin. "Among his many charitable endeavors, Matt's work as co-founder of Water.org has inspired us to honor him."

The Critics Choice Movie Awards ceremony will be telecast on VH1 at 9 p.m. on Jan. 14.

  • Tina Fey discussed Matt's return to 30 Rock.

  • An article on True Grit's financial success possibly leading to awards consideration, and an interview with Joel and Ethan Coen.

  • From an interview with Hallie Steinfeld at teen.com:

Teen.com: Tell us something that most people wouldn’t know about Matt Damon?
Hailee Steinfeld: Matt... has an iPad but all he does with it is play Scrabble.

  • Photos of Matt arriving in LA to start rehearsals for We bought a zoo are at PopSugar. Journalist Lauren Sanchez (also the wife of Matt's agent) mentioned that she will have a role in the film on her Twitter.

  • Hereafter will be released on BluRay and DVD on 15 March 2011.

  • Journalist Tom Shone previewed an upcoming interview with Matt for The Times on his blog, which discusses the origins of Good Will Hunting and the involvement of Terrence Malick. A previous article on Shone's blog about Matt's best roles is available here.

During a recent interview with Matt Damon for The Times, I spoke at length about the writing of Good Will Hunting. The script arose, he said, from the stew of mixed feelings he had first as a Cambridge townie resentful of Harvard students, then as a Harvard undergraduate himself experiencing first hand the life he had been envying from afar.

  • Jodie Foster will be joining Matt and Sharlto Copley in Neill Blomkamp's Elysium. Matt compaired Hailee Steinfeld to Foster in an interview in the latest issue of Empire, saying she is someone (like Foster) who is unlikely to be "screwed up by the industry".

Sculptor Adam Beane has made a mini sculpture of Matt for Jimmy Kimmel Live (an upcoming skit?)

    The likeness is very good:

    Empire interview

There's an interview with Matt in the February 2011 issue of Empire magazine. Here's the online preview:

    Men Of 2011: Matt Damon
We've probably all got to-do lists good to go for the New Year, but none are surely as exhaustive (and exhausting) as Matt Damon's, atop which we think might be the words, "Be in as many movies as humanly possible". He has seven - count 'em - releases lined up for 2011, and that's before counting the penguiny voicework he lends to Happy Feet 2 and a gravitas-packing voiceover on Inside Job. Phe-ew. But the charming Bostonian was in typically fine fettle when he sat down to chat with Empire to chat about being reunited with Clint Eastwood for Hereafter and a 2011 slate that includes some gems.

    We Bought a Zoo

So...how are you guys feeling about "We Bought A Zoo"? I'll probably totally take this back when I see it, and one of the reasons Matt is so great is that he consistently chooses quality projects, but I'm scared this could veer off into an overly cheesy/family-friendly/formulaic place. Some of the casting is also a bit frightening...reassure me! Haha

    Re: We Bought a Zoo

The book is fine, but it's not a movie. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna has been re-tweaked by Crowe and it will be quite different from the book, and will now be set in the US, not England. The characters have been merged, made movie-friendly etc.

Crowe wants a hit, and the studio wants a family friendly, tragedy-turned-feelgood good story in the same timeslot as 'Marley and me' (Christmas). Scarlett's role will be quite minor, and she won't be a full-on love interest - the movie should be a love story between Matt's character and his wife, not a newcomer to his life. They'll promote the comedic aspects, the animals and a happy ending, mixed with a good soundtrack. It should be well done, but they said that about Elizabethtown. The main issue will be the tone - how do you make a fairly tragic story positive and with wide appeal to audiences. Answer = animals, cute kids, happy ending.

Jeff Wells talked about the film in his column today:

Some quotes in this article at the Sun I would like to have been completely invented but originate from the interview at Empire (Matt wants to take on Universal with his own Bourne franchise). http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/film/3334554/Angry-Matt-takes-on-Universal.html

Quotes from an interview in UK's FHM magazine (the story's not new but we didn't know the idea came from Minnie Driver):

    Re: Various

Thanks E. The quote appears to be from the Empire interview. It's really not a smart or calculated move - the whining looks poor to everybody (including Oscar voters), it sounds arrogant, and would put Universal offside when he's got a film coming out with the studio shortly.

    Re: Bourne comments

It looks obvious to me that he was joking.

    Re: Various

Matt had to have been joking seeing that Universal does in fact own the Bourne movies and with a few outside exceptions owns all of Ludlums works..something Matt would know.

New interview at the Wall Street Journal:

Including his comment about trying to work with the Coen brothers again:
Matt: We did [an interview with] Charlie Rose about a month ago and as we were leaving, I asked them what they were working on. They said they didn't know, so I said, "Untitled Matt Damon Project"?

Michael Douglas interview refers to Matt and Liberace:
