We Bought a Zoo

So...how are you guys feeling about "We Bought A Zoo"? I'll probably totally take this back when I see it, and one of the reasons Matt is so great is that he consistently chooses quality projects, but I'm scared this could veer off into an overly cheesy/family-friendly/formulaic place. Some of the casting is also a bit frightening...reassure me! Haha

Re: We Bought a Zoo

The book is fine, but it's not a movie. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna has been re-tweaked by Crowe and it will be quite different from the book, and will now be set in the US, not England. The characters have been merged, made movie-friendly etc.

Crowe wants a hit, and the studio wants a family friendly, tragedy-turned-feelgood good story in the same timeslot as 'Marley and me' (Christmas). Scarlett's role will be quite minor, and she won't be a full-on love interest - the movie should be a love story between Matt's character and his wife, not a newcomer to his life. They'll promote the comedic aspects, the animals and a happy ending, mixed with a good soundtrack. It should be well done, but they said that about Elizabethtown. The main issue will be the tone - how do you make a fairly tragic story positive and with wide appeal to audiences. Answer = animals, cute kids, happy ending.

Jeff Wells talked about the film in his column today:
