Possible new directing project
  • Matt's first directing project may be Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses, which Warner Bros is seeking to purchase as a spec script by Matthew Aldrich. Matt may also star in the film - details are from Deadline, including:

In a $500,000 against $800,000 deal, Warner Bros is finalizing a deal to acquire Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses, the Matthew Aldrich spec that Deadline told you yesterday had five bids on the table. The deal is just happening, and I expect the next development to be that Matt Damon is working on this picture as its star and also eyeing it as potentially the one on which he'll make his feature directing debut. He will also produce through his WB-based company Pearl Street, with partner Ben Affleck, Chris Moore and Drew Vinton also producing.

The script focuses on a man who goes on the lam with his daughter, his accomplice on a three-state crime spree.

"When one of the biggest movie stars in the world, who also happens to be an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, gets on the phone with your client and offers to protect the writer's vision and opens his hand to be a creative partner, it's hard to say no," [Aldrich's manager Jewerl] Ross said. "The money becomes secondary. This script is not the obvious studio movie. There are no explosions. It will require delicate handling. Avoiding years of development hell was our goal."

    Directing project

When I heard about the script, the first thing that occurred to me was that Matt wanted to direct. I think he's ready.

    Re: Directing project

And with the rumors about Liberace filming this year (now possibly incorrect), it did look like he was trying to leave next year free to create and direct a project. The project sounds interesting - just wish he had written something himself.

    Re: Directing project

Michael Douglas said on The View Monday that Liberace is shooting in the fall. Can Soderbergh do both Liberace and Channing Tatum's stripper film?

    Re: Directing project

I say he prioritize Matt over the stripper thing, hands down. Michael and Matt aren't getting any younger! Sorry if you've answered this before, but does Matt have anything showing at Cannes this year? And is Margaret now a 2012 release? I am so curious to see it, and it will be fun to see Matt in a new movie filmed when he was like, 35.

    Re: Directing project

    Nothing at Cannes this year.

Margaret may be out this year if it can be edited down to a reasonable length, but it probably won't be out in 2011.

    Re: Directing project

For a spec script with no explosions to actually have a bidding war in Hollywood these days is so rare that it must be excellent. All the best to everyone involved - I hope Matt gets to make the movie he wants to make.

An update on Margaret from Mark Ruffalo, who says the film is currently being edited by Martin Scorsese:

Matt was at the musical 'Book of Mormon' in NY on Saturday night - it was created by the South Park guys.
