Save our Schools rally
  • Matt was the final speaker at the Save our Schools rally in Washington DC on Saturday, where he was introduced by his mother, Nancy Carlsson-Paige. Matt's well-received speech and Nancy's introduction is available at the Teacher Leaders Network and the text is at the Washington Post, including:

I was raised by a teacher. My mother is a professor of early childhood education. And from the time I went to kindergarten through my senior year in high school, I went to public schools. I wouldn’t trade that education and experience for anything.

I had incredible teachers. As I look at my life today, the things I value most about myself — my imagination, my love of acting, my passion for writing, my love of learning, my curiosity — all come from how I was parented and taught.

And none of these qualities that I’ve just mentioned — none of these qualities that I prize so deeply, that have brought me so much joy, that have brought me so much professional success — none of these qualities that make me who I am ... can be tested.

  • Articles on the rally are available at Variety, Parents across America, Huffington Post, Think Progress, EdWeek, CNN, Washington Post and reason.org. Photos are from Education Week, Gotham Schools, Washington Post and Teacher Sabrina, with more at the Daily Mail.

  • An article about the Vancouver crew on Elysium.

"District 9 was such a success partly because no one knew anything about it," says [editor Julian] Clarke. "They want to preserve the mystery of this show to similar ends."

  • Cameron Crowe has revealed that Sigur Ros singer Jonsi will be scoring We bought a zoo.

Matt has an amazing capacity to grab a complex issue and use common language to illuminate it. He goes right to the heart of it. If only well-informed, caring, honorable people like HIM would run for congress, America could fix itself in a few years.
It's no wonder the right hates him so much. The last thing they want is to fix America.

It's a rare skill that Matt has, I've met a few people who can do it. I find the whole American political system quite baffling. The UK has a lot of problems like everywhere else, but what happened in Norway shows what unbridled right wing views can lead to. Marcia

A local DC station has a sweet video from behind the scenes with Matt and a teacher of his from high school :)

Thanks for all these articles and pictures. Amazingly Matt still looks hot with no hair, bald men tend not to do it for me but he looks fantastic

    Matt's Speech

Matt's speech was perfectly judged. Teaching is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Sadly as he mentioned too much policy is made by those who have never done it and are obsessed with testing and measuring.

Of course he'll be attacked by the usual nut jobs out there in cyber space, so I'm doubly impressed as it takes real courage to stand up and be counted in this world. Thanks. Marcia

    Re: Matt's Speech

Matt's also getting heat (and support) for a few other comments he made:

    Talking about charter schools:

The debt ceiling, tax thresholds and Republican - youtube.

Fox News has just televised part of the interview about tax increases (for the wealthy) seemingly out of context, so expect some reactions.
