New Whitey Bulger project
  • Matt revealed in an interview with GQ that he will be playing Boston criminal Whitey Bulger in a new film to be directed by Ben Affleck. Casey Affleck will also co-star, but the film's a long way from production. The interview was from the upcoming January cover story.

Just days after Matt Damon confirmed that he's settled on his first directing project, the actor tells GQ that he and Ben Affleck have also chosen their next collaboration: a movie about the reputed former godfather of the Irish Mob, one of the coldest, most ruthless figures in the history of organized crime.

"We're doing a Whitey Bulger movie," Damon says of the leader of South Boston's Winter Hill Gang, who had been on the lam for 16 years and was wanted for 19 murders, among other things, when he was apprehended in Santa Monica in June. "Warner's got it for us."

"There are a couple of competing movies and I don't think it's been announced yet that we're doing it," Damon says. "But the sooner it's announced the better, just because everyone else will back off, hopefully. I'm really excited about it."

So will Damon play the young, vital Bulger or the aging fugitive? The actor says he doesn't yet know. "If it's a straight biopic, we'll do it over a period of time. But it's always a question of what part of the story do you tell, and biopics are always a little cumbersome," Damon says. "So do we find another way in? We're still figuring it out."

  • A comment by Mark Wahlberg about the proposed film:

We asked Mark if he would be in the movie and he said "After The Departed it's not really something you need to go back to."

He was excited about the "Fighter 2," though.

  • In the GQ interview Matt also discussed the newly announced directing project with John Krasinski and The Trade:

There'd been talk that Damon and Affleck, who won Oscars in 1998 for their best original screenplay Good Will Hunting, would next reteam on The Trade, about two Yankees pitchers who swapped wives in the '70s. But legal challenges have slowed that project, Damon says.

"That might happen at some point," he says. But the Bulger picture will come first.

Last week, meanwhile, Damon confirmed that he will be directing his first film for Warner Bros.: a script he co-wrote with John Krasinski of The Office. He's keeping mum about the idea, which Krasinski originally developed with Dave Eggers, but to say, "It's about a salesman who goes to this small town and how the salesman is changed by his experience there." Reports last week that the movie resembles Erin Brockovich and involves a mass poisoning in the town are wrong, he says, shaking his head.

"Nobody gets poisoned," says Damon, who plans to direct the untitled film early next year. "I don't know where that came from."

  • A sighting from the New York Post. Matt, Emily and John were also sighted earlier on Saturday evening:

    Three’s company
Matt Damon and John Krasinski seemed to be taking a party break from developing their untitled film together on Saturday night at 1920 Bunker Club in the Meatpacking District. Damon was seen dancing to hip-hop and sipping Champagne with Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, and “The Office” star. Damon and Krasinski’s reps announced last week that Damon will make his directorial debut on a Warner Bros. film he’s co-written with Krasinski. The movie follows a salesman who moves to a small town. But don’t worry that Damon’s bro-mance with Ben Affleck might be replaced: Affleck just announced that he’ll direct Damon in an upcoming Whitey Bulger biopic.

    New movie?

Is this yet another new movie for Matt? Sunlight jr featuring Matt and Naomi watts. It's been quiet for a while and now all this coming out.

Do you think ny post would overlook Lucy? Not that there's anything wrong if she wasn't.

    Re: New movie?

Sunlight Jr. sounds like quite a dark movie - every character is described as 'mousy', 'crusty' or 'like a serial killer'! Hopefully Naomi Watts would be good in it, I've seen some movies where she's not very believable.

Mark Wahlberg has turned into such an arrogant curmudgeon. I don't think I've ever heard him comment positively on anyone else's work, even though he depends on people like Matt to do awesome movies so he can star in imitations of it later (like that 'Shooter' movie that blatantly stole from The Bourne Identity). Ugh. Rant over.

    Re: New movie?

It's probably Matt Dillon. Matt's not involved.

    And agreed on Wahlberg.

    Re: New movie?

Ditto on Wahlberg - why people like him as an actor, I'll never know.

Matt must be doing interviews today. I've seen a couple of tweets mentioning interviewing him. (probably for we bought a zoo or could he be doing press for happy feet?).

It figures that movie would be Matt dillon. I already did a mini rant on that in earlier comments. Especially for a casting notice get the info correct.

Matt did international press for Adjustment Bureau five months before the film was released (journos saw excerpts from the film only). So maybe that was it. Matt's not due to attend the Happy Feet premiere in LA (but he'll probably be filming in Mexico at the time).

Can't find any confirmation that Dillon's in Sunlight Jr, but it's a low-budget film by the director of Sherrybaby.

    Bunker Club sighting

Here's a new take on the Bunker Club sighting from People:

Talk about a star-studded outing! Jeremy Renner was in the Big Apple, partying at 1920 Bunker Club in the Meatpacking District when he ran into Matt Damon. Renner, who will soon star in the next installment of the Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy, chatted up the actor for some time. Damon, meanwhile, was out for the night with pal John Krasinski and wife Emily Blunt.

Off-topic, Emily Blunt's sister reportedly just got engaged to Stanley Tucci. That's pretty cool.

    new interview

This seems like a new interview but it won't let me read it. I believe it's telling me it's a preview and I need to register. Can somebody access this?

    Re: new interview

Definitely a new article which is hard to access. Here's the first paragraph (translated):

Matt Damon is bald. This is the starting point when meeting with him while he's in the middle of yet another film. Talented, humorous and humble, Damon also said that Wagner Moura is one of the most talented guys he's ever acted with.

The pop-up box on the text says that it's a preview and for the full text you have to read the magazine.

    AOL ad, Zoo

A few sightings today of Matt in a Santa suit and linked to AOL, so it's presumably another ad/promo on AOL for water.org

@Jay_TheShark Matt Damon just walked by me in a Santa suit. I love my job. #AOL

Matty's playing the role of Whitely Bultler. I hope he is able to depict him well. I never knew who he was until recently. Once I put 2+2 together it scared the living daylights out of me. I would like to play one of his girlfriends later in life, but I'm a lousy actor. I hope the movie is a great success. Allison
