Behind the Candelabra, Elysium
  • The first official still from Elysium has been released at EW, via The Playlist.

  • Photos of Matt, Lucy and family in LA last weekend are at PopSugar.

  • The first casting call for Behind the Candelabra will be held in Palm Springs next weekend - details here. Steven Soderbergh talked about the film at Total Film and Film Comment:

Soderbergh: I want the movie to be sincere, and I want it to be accurate. Now it may be both those things, and it still might be used as a hammer by someone. It’s almost like with Che: I was ready to be attacked, but I didn’t want to be attacked for being historically inaccurate. At the same time, you have to step back and say it’s just a relationship movie. It just happens to be two guys. I could argue that it’s more interesting for it to be two guys because the world they occupy is so strange.

Because of the period? Because of the closet?
Yeah. That specific aspect of show business at that time was just so weird. Liberace was living in the era when he had to hide that part of his life. It would have been career-ending. It’s sad. But now he wouldn’t have to worry about it. You could argue if there had been no Liberace, would we have the Elton John that we have? But my job pictorially is just to figure out how to shoot all these Jacuzzi scenes.

  • Marvin Hamlisch will be doing the score - from the Sun-Herald:

Damon and Soderbergh have paired up again, for a movie about Liberace. It stars Michael Douglas as the entertainer famously described as a "sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavoured, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love", in an article that led him to sue for libel, claiming it falsely accused him of being homosexual. Damon plays a lover who, feeling wronged, outs Liberace to the media. Hamlisch, the piano man, was the obvious choice to write the score.

"I'm not sure people knew how brilliant a pianist Liberace was," he says. "All the costumes that made him a star stopped people from listening to his playing. You can't take away that incredible talent.

    We bought a zoo interview

Dont remember seeing this before but it appears to be from we bought a zoo promotion. Nice pic of Matt. Does anybody know of a good translation service? I usually use google translate but it seems to be translating everything but the article

Re: We bought a zoo interview

No, because the article has been scanned no translation site will work on the text. But the photos look to be new.

    various stuff

I like the grainy look of Elysium. Of course, I'm assuming the photo is representative of the cinematography of the film. District 9 certainly had a very unique look, in that it was both grainy and hypersaturated with light. It was actually my favorite thing about the movie.

Not sure how I feel about Hamlisch writing the score for Liberace. His "Informant" score was very controversial.

Don't they start Liberace in a couple of weeks? Surely Matt will have to surface then!

And one of the cable networks just showed "Bourne Identity" again and I turned it on intending to watch just the opening (I've seen it any number of times) and ended up watching almost the whole thing. What a wonderful movie that is. Matt's willingness to be sooooo vulnerable in the part is what makes it.

    Re: various stuff

The grainy look may just be due to the scan of the photo from the magazine. But we'll wait and see.

Liberace starts next Monday, so this week may be pre-production at the Red studio prior to Comic-Con on Saturday.

    People Speak, Australia

An Australian version of The People Speak will be taped in Sydney tonight - and it's a great cast:

    Speculating about 2013

This is the first time (that I can remember) that Matt has no future projects once Liberace has finished. The RFK project is not looking likely, the Whitey Bulger project still hasn't got a script, and nothing else is in the works.

Will a directing project come up (Father Daughter Time), or maybe another writing project with Ben or John Krasinski? What would you like to see Matt doing next year?

    Re: Speculating about 2013

It seems to me Matt is paying the price for all those noble projects he took on that weren't hits. The last big hit he had was True Grit, but most people seemed to give the credit to the Coens. Hollywood is so silly, DiCaprio will be lauded by his press flacks for being the reason Django Unchained is a hit (which it's sure to be), when he's not the reason at all. And people went to Inception for Chris Nolan.

What a difficult and fickle business. The jobs you have an opportunity for depend on how well your last job did as opposed to how well you did in it. It seems like unless your movie makes $250 mill it's not good enough.

I feel badly for Matt. He's such a great actor and lovely person, but as he himself has said, that doesn't matter if your movies aren't hits, at least in the short term.

I don't really know what he sould do, but I hope he doesn't get desperate and take crap. Maybe he needs to do some writing to get himself the role he wants.

    Re: Speculating about 2013

I would love him to do a play in London. Would be great to see him in the flesh, and he can still read scripts and see what comes up. Marcia

I agree a play in London would be amazing, he's a brilliant actor and i hope he does have some jobs coming up as im needing my Matt medicine

    Re: Speculating about 2013

Possibly Elysium will make a lot of money and put him back on the list of "winners". Maybe he should do a Good Will Hunting sequel; he and Ben could script a great one, I think.

    Re: Speculating about 2013

I´d like him to do a Woddy Allen movie shot in Buenos Aires.
I´d love him as a hihgly neurotic intellectual, a young Woody.
Would he be in a W.Allen movie?

    Would he work with R.Polanski?
I really hope not, and I´m not 100% sure about W.Allen.

I guess a play in Buenos Aires is out of the question.

It´d be great if he and Ben wrote something, something with a soul.

By the way, I watched Margaret a few days ago. It was amazing.

    Re: Speculating about 2013

I'm waiting for the DVD of Margaret to arrive with the extended cut.

Matt has said before he had an audition for a Woody Allen movie years ago and it didn't go well so he does not expect to be called back.

He has said before he wants to work with Pedro Almodovar in Spanish, so that would be fun.

I would expect Matt is getting offers but just appears to be keeping 2013 clear, for unknown reasons.

    Re: Speculating about 2013

Thanks for the info! I didt know that...

I almost forget! I always say -to myself- that I would looove him to play David Bowie in a movie about his life. All the changing looks through the years and singing included, I´m not kidding.

Another option: Barbarella remake, Matt plays Duran-Duran, Soderbergh directs.

    What do you think?

    ƪ('◡')ʃ Elysium looks good,VERY GOOD!

    Peter Sciretta ‏@slashfilm
Ran into someone who saw Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium and was over the moon about it, claiming its better than Blade Runner.

    Peter Sciretta ‏@slashfilm
He also said says its Matt Damon’s best performance to date. Count me even more excited…

    Re: Elysium

I read a rumor just today that Elysium got an ovation at a recent screening. Maybe Matt's just keeping his powder dry as he waits for Elysium to hit next year. And I think his film with Krasinski is supposed to be out this year.
Or it could be he's leaving himself time to direct.

    Re: Elysium

Yes, I doubt he's having any issues getting work, he's probably as in-demand as ever, and I don't think we ever have to worry about him making crap :) He's awesome that way.

I think he's definitely leaving time for family, and perhaps directing as well...

My fantasy project for him would be a sequel to "All the Pretty Horses" in which he reunites with Penelope's character and they live happily ever after (stop laughing), or another Bourne film with Greengrass in which Marie comes back to life and they reunite and live happily ever after...you can tell the issues I have had with his films :)

I too am excited for Elysium, it seems like it will be a big hit and put Neill Blomkamp on the map for mainstream viewers.

I'd love to see Margaret, hopefully Netflix will pick it up; it's hard to find.

    Re: Elysium

The Blu-Ray DVD of Margaret with the extended 3 hour cut is out today, after the movie finally made it to Australian cinemas last week (in about one cinema per city). Matt seems to have a very minor role though (even in the longer cut).

Sony's putting in a major effort to promote Elysium at Comic-Con - the latest pics are at Coming Soon:

Sony's even taken over the outside of Hard Rock:

MTV will have a live stream of some Comic-Con events (probably only available to those in the US):

    Re: Elysium

Pretty Horses was good but Rounders was excellent. If there is any sequel talk, it would be getting Mike and Worm back together. Edward Norton and Matt had great chemistry on the screen. And I want Malkovich back too.

    translation of Italian article

I’ve tried to translate the Italian article (“Chic o choc”- comment from the 8 July). The pics are nice, do you think they are recent?
Forgive my English, it isn’t my language!
There is nothing new in this article; the reporter introduce “We bought a zoo” and Matt says it’s easier to play that role now as he is a husband and a father too, he can understand what it is to lose his partner. Then, he talks about his live with his family: happy with the four girls, doesn’t want to try to have a boy, (“girls are another world, more difficult to understand than boys!”), today his priorities have changed, he doesn’t go to the gym after work but wants to come back to have a dinner with his family. He also says that his wife is more severe with the daughters than he.
About work, he says that what is interesting in his job is the fact that he can play so many different characters otherwise it’s must be boring. He talks about project with Ben and says that this friendship is very important for him. He never can do this career and go to LA when they were young without Ben at his side. He talks about politics, says that he likes it but not to do it:”it’s a difficult world and to survive in it you must be very strong”. And in the end, he says that it’s difficult to reconcile career and family live (the rule of 3 weeks). If he can’t go home, the family comes on the set. Last question:” do you believe in fate? I think it was very good for me but I ‘m realistic and I know that our live depends of decisions we take.”

    Re: translation of Italian article

Thanks very much for translating the article! It came out great. I don't think the pictures are new but they're probably from late last year.

There should be new photos later of Matt (and family), John and Emily leaving the Giorgio Baldi restaurant in LA (David Beckham was also there).

Only link so far is to a video which can't be accessed:

Lots more pics expected on Friday at Comic-Con.

Matt Damon & Chris Hemsworth in LA

Given that these two actors and their wives went on holiday in January. Now that Chris & Elsa are in L.A. with their new baby girl India I'm sure they will be catching up with the Damons to meet India. We'll have to see if pictures come out of them together.
