Elysium at Comic-Con
  • The first footage of Elysium was shown at Comic-Con in San Diego, where Matt, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley and director Neill Blomkamp were in attendance. For extensive links see the comments section in the last post, but key links include the live blog of the panel presentation at Coming Soon and Anne Thompson's interview with Blomkamp and video of the panel Q&A here. Interviews with Matt about Elysium and Bourne are at PopSugar and E Online, and highlights of a video interview with the cast is at EW. Other articles discussing the very well received footage are at the Hollywood Reporter, HitFix and EW. Photos are from AP, Zimbio, Best Movie.it and Vanity Fair.

A fun interview with Matt about random topics (and always Bourne) at the Huffington Post:

Q: But then Frank Marshall comes out and says that his dream is to have you and Jeremy back for a fifth movie.

Matt: Yeah, I mean, if they could get a script. You know what I mean? All Paul and I ever wanted was a script. And nobody could crack it. And that's the thing, if you really look at the mythology of the character, we would have to figure out some reason to get him going again. Because he is a guy who walked away from everything, so we just have to solve that. And Paul and I haven't been able to do it. And we really wanted to make another one; we almost were making one a couple of years ago -- and then we just couldn't crack it. Because the second we said that we'd do it, they would announce a release date and then we would be making the movie. That happened to us on the last one. We did not have a script and we had a release date. And that was just harrowing.

Paul and I have talked about it -- it took years off of our lives. Without question. The amount of stress that we were under and it was just nonstop for nine months -- in a kind of semi-panic. It was just a sh-tty feeling. He turned to me on day 100 of the last Bourne movie we did -- and we are really good friends -- and he just finally shook his head and he said, "This just isn't fun." And it wasn't. And there's no reason to make a movie -- particularly for the two of us -- there's no reason that a Bourne movie shouldn't be fun for everybody.

    Elysium at Comic-Con

The footage was very well received indeed.

Elysium footage wins Comic Con 2012 (thus far)

The negative comments you've mentioned the other day ..well, I just don't know where they come, 'cause very few people have seen the material previously...

I'm done with this "faux Bourne". I don't like it,so, I will not seeing it.
I regret that in every interview, people ask the same question to Matt.
I admire his poise to respond to the same thing over and over again with grace and class.
I would really like to see Matt as Jason Bourne, again. But I think it's difficult (though, not impossible).
Renner is getting starring roles in movies of dubious quality, (IMHO) but that raised a lot of money, earning a reputation as an box office success. He seems (to me)easily manipulated by the machinery of Hollywood, while Matt, is not.
Universal seems to support him 100% (I assume you've read on the gossip blogs the rumor that the departure of Ted Casablanca from E! has much to do with Ted "accidentally" outing Renner)
So, maybe Universal decides to continue the series with Renner's character instead of "the true Bourne".(I guess that depends of the results in Box Office of "Legacy"). That, and not the quality or integrity of the film seems to be the only thing that matter to the study...(Duh!.. How silly I am!) Of course that make money IS THE ONLY THING that matters for a Big Studio.....

    Re: {{{{{(>_<)}}}}}

Renner is out to make as much as he can as fast as he can. He's obviously hungry enough to sign on for multiple Bournes upfront, which diminishes his control over the quality of the content to nothing in the sequels. Audiences smell that eventually. Matt will still be working when he's 70, if that's what he wants.

What excites me the most about the reports of Matt's role in Elysium is the news (maybe in bleeding cool?) that his character is very sarcastic. That's a side of Matt as an actor I have NEVER seen and by itself would make me excited to see the movie. But having all these great reports about the footage on top of that thrills me to pieces. Great to let everyone know that they can skip Legacy and see some great MD action in only 6 months.

    Re: {{{{{(>_<)}}}}}

And I've seen one comment on a blog that Matt has definitely filmed a cameo for Legacy (which I don't believe), and it will be up to the studio whether they include it or not. Matt doesn't need Bourne and will be fine without it. It's not like he would want to film for five months around the world anymore (plus the pressure of not wanting to let the series down).

Thank you so much for putting all of the links here. Theres a lot out there and I'm still trying to catch up to everything.

Matt remains classy in reference to bourne. I understand his point that it feels like a different movie being that renner is not Bourne. I admire his integrity (and paul) for not jumping in to a sequel without it making sense. He could of so easily have done it and made some easy money. I had the misfortune of seeing a trailer when it came on tv and my gut reaction was just another generic action movie.

On superficial note Matt has colored his hair for liberace it appears (Michael Douglas has too). I like his new glasses. I was hoping to see Lucy at comic con but he probably just did press all day and went back to la.

I like to thank the person who translated the Italian article. Very much Appreciated.

I forgot to add above that I'm not really a sci fi fan but Elysium does have my interest. I did not see district 9 (am I the only one?). I like how neill b does not like Hollywood people but met Matt and was charmed. Not a surprise. :)

Liberace's going to be very interesting because he is just the wrong actor for the part. Thorson was 18 when he met Liberace, and he stayed with him for about five years. He's described as a 'blond Adonis', and is over six foot and slim. The movie is going to be great fun to make, and they seem to be making Matt in the film a lot older (and brunette).

    video interview

Fantastic video interview with Matt at comingsoon in which he talks more about the difficulties of balancing directing with his family responsiblities.

    Re: video interview

And he mentions Promised Land (with its budget of $18 million) but not Liberace. Matt confirms he didn't direct because of the time it would have meant away from home after the long Elysium shoot.

    Other interviews and photos:

This is a good interview of Sharlto talking about Matt and why they connected (they do seem to be good friends):

    Zoo interviews

We Bought A Zoo is now out on DVD in the UK so there are some 'new' interviews from last year's press junkets:

    When are you happiest?
When I get home at night; I sit on the couch and all four of my children are with me.

    And the Daily Mirror:

How about your love life? Did you have that moment too?
I remember going to the movies with a girl when I was in the seventh grade and doing the yawn move [laughs]. And really wanting to kiss her. The movie was 48 Hours. It was 1982. With Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. It took me almost to the end of the movie. It took two hours but eventually my 20 seconds kicked in and I gave her a kiss.

You've been married for six years to Luciana and now you have to talk about playing this role and losing the one you love.
Even as a thought exercise, I don't want to think about losing her. I think Cameron did such a great job of writing this story. Any time I am saying dialogue and it is coming out easily, usually it is terrific writing.

    Re: Zoo interviews

I can't seen to find a link to the daily mirror interview. Is it an online interview?

    Re: Zoo interviews

Sorry, I haven't found the Daily Mirror interview online - nothing else was interesting/new.

    Re: Zoo interviews

Thanks for all the links to Comic Con, really enjoyed watching them all. Elysium looks really interesting, not a big fan of sci-fi, but will definitely see this.

The Matt drought is over for now and I'm enjoying it whilst it lasts!

BTW didn't realise Jodie Foster was so tiny! Matt isn't that tall and he towers over her (read somewhere that he's 5'10").

Anyway, on a non Matt related topic - the Olympics start in less than two weeks and it's still raining! Pretty much everything that can go wrong has gone wrong, and 1 million more people in London - everything most Londoners hate, tourists and sport :) Marcia
