  • Matt talked about Elysium and Promised Land in a video interview at Coming Soon - my transcript is below.

On being offered the role in Elysium
Matt: "I had to do whatever it takes and rearrange my life to take this movie.”

    Promised Land
Matt: "Gus ended up directing it. We ran a little over on Elysium and just for personal reasons I couldn’t leave my family again right away. I’m also a producer of Promised Land with John Krasinski and we wrote it, we acted in it and produced it. My joke is the producer side of me was really happy the day I fired myself and asked Gus to direct it because we got a world class director and that’s better for the movie. We had a real budget of $18 million, shot it in 30 days and I think it’s really good and I’m really proud of it.

I want to (direct). It’s really about timing at this point. Because with directing, with pre-production and production it’s about a six month chunk give or take and so it’s about managing a way to do that with my life with four little kids at home. I don’t do very well away when I’m away from them actually, I prefer it when we all go on the road together but obviously with school and everything it’s a whole other thing. So a lot of stars have to align in the right way.”

  • Another interview is at the Huffington Post.

Taking this role, is it that easy? Because you liked what Neill Blomkamp did with "District 9"?
It was that easy for me. When I saw "D9," I was completely on board with him. I really hoped I'd get the chance to work with that guy. Then, soon after that, my agent called and says, "He's got this movie and I don't know anything about it, but he wants to sit down and meet with you. Neill was leery of what he called "Hollywood people." Like, he didn't want to work with anybody who was a movie star.

    He has his own group.
Yeah, he has his whole crew.

    Like Sharlto Copley.
Yeah, he's got Sharlto. But he came and met me at the diner around the corner from my house in New York. And he was looking at me the whole time, "You're not like what I thought." And I'm like, "What did you expect, dude?" We walked home and he's like, "All right, this doesn't seem so horrible."

  • Other interviews: Sharlto Copley talks about working with Matt in this interview, working out for Elysium at Access Hollywood, a summary of Matt's quotes about Bourne at Indiewire, and in the middle of a mostly indecipherable podcast, there's a fun, informal interview with Matt at Jo Blo.

  • From interviews to promote We Bought A Zoo at the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror:

    What couldn’t you live without?
My wife and kids. My wife, Luciana Barroso, is my soul mate. We have a rule that we never spend more than two weeks apart. We haven’t got beyond a week.

What were you like as a child?
I was an intense kid and did well at school. When I was 14, I wanted to go to the Yale School of Drama to become an actor, though I ended up at Harvard studying English.

A day in the Damon household?
A full sprint from morning till night. The best part is when the children are at school and my wife and I can get a cup of coffee.

    Most humbling moment?
A great white shark swam right by me while I was cage-diving in South Africa – it was so exhilarating. At that moment, I realised I was right in the middle of the food chain.

    Something we don’t know about?
I never finished my degree at Harvard. Technically, I’m still on an extended leave of absence.

    When are you happiest?
When I get home at night; I sit on the couch and all four of my children are with me.

  • A report on the Palm Springs casting call for Behind the Candelabra is at the Desert Sun. Filming starts on Monday.

About 100 extras are needed to play fans, medical personnel and likely other parts, casting director Rich King said.

“We're shooting in some of the places where he lived and places he frequented,” King said. Locals “are gonna be used to the heat here, I think. You bring L.A. people out here, they'll pass out.”

Filming in Palm Springs is scheduled for the week of Aug. 20.

In one of the popsugar pics where he's standing with Jodie & co. you can see his chain peeking out of his shirt. I'm guessing it's the dog tag that Lucy gave him for their anniversary. Can't enlarge the pic to see for sure.

Matt looks like he's lost weight for the Liberace shoot - his face is thinner than I've seen it in a long time. It really has taken years off him.

Matt looks happy, fit and wonderful!

    Re: pics

If you ask me, he´s perfect in We bought a zoo, that´s his perfect weight for me. Or The departed, also. The rest, I worry he´s not eating well..
    Nutritious love,

    More comic con

I've been waiting for this to come out. Matt seemed to get a real kick out of it. Must have been a nice lil break from answering the questions all day.

And the Extra interview is out (can't access text at the moment):

Lots of rumors that Matt is in Boise at the moment for a wedding, but they are probably false. 'Behind the candelabra' started today, but I don't know if Matt was on set (Cheyenne Jackson was).

    Re: More comic con

I saw the Boise rumors but I keep getting the feeling it's a big joke. Apparently the local radio station is reporting he's in town. What really raises a red flag for me is that the person who first tweeted seeing him took a pic of a crowd of people but no pic of matt? Is he suppose to be in the middle if the crowd? Or maybe they mean Matt dillon who knows.

Didn't know Ben Lyons was with extra now. I'm assuming it's the same Ben from e news.

    Re: More comic con

    It is the same Ben.

Matt Zaller also interviewed Sharlto about Matt:

    Other interviews

On whether this is one of his best performances: "Yeah, I think so. The role is great and it's unlike anything I've ever had the chance to do."

Is Matt Damon's character from School Ties still a "prick" all these years later? "I think he's totally still a prick. ... Let's see, it's 25 years later ... yeah, he'd be into some bad sh*t."

Best sci-fi gadget (time machine question):

    An AP story is coming:
    Ryan Pearson‏@ryanwrd
Now transcribing video of Matt Damon reciting Bruce Springsteen lyrics
Q: Did he get it right?
A: He did! It was "Jack of All Trades"

    Re: Other interviews

I think the transcript for the interview mis-recorded one of his answers. As for if its one of his best performances, he answered "I hope so", not "I think so". So modest :)

I'm so looking forward to the film, although I hope it doesn't glamorize violence too much - the weapons look a little nuts!

I think I'm going to be a new fan of Sharlto as well...I love that he's known Neill since Neill was 16 and encouraged his creativity. Too cool.

    The Bulger movie

E is apparently reporting that Matt's Whitey Bluger movie with Ben is a go.

    Re: The Bulger movie

I'll be happy if this one never actually gets to film. This is an October 2011 report, so there's nothing new.

    Re: The Bulger movie

You mentioned before this is the first time in a long time Matt doesn't have anything lined up after liberace is done. Hearing him talk about it taking a 6 month chunk to direct a movie I wonder that maybe he's clearing his schedule for possibly next yr. to do this. Of course this is speculation on my part.

Elysium sure was a long shoot and when it came out he wouldn't direct promised land it made sense. Matt is not one to do anything half assed.

    Liberace shoot

Has anybody seen any information on how long the Liberace film will be shooting for? The budget is only $6 million and Soderbergh shoots very quickly, and the Palm Springs shoot is for the week of August 20. Maybe they're doing all of the LA scenes first before Vegas and Palm Springs.

    Re: Liberace shoot

I was actually wondering the same thing hoping you would know. Haven't seen anything as far as filming goes. Cheyenne Jackson hasn't tweeted anything else. Not even olv has any info besides the casting call. According to that palm springs filming is aug 20 & 21.

And someone has tweeted they saw Matt at the gym in new York this morning.

Thank you Paula! I hadn't seen that yet. Another doppelgänger in new York. Should have known.

    (I'm not logged in)

Update on Liberace shoot, but we still have no idea of how long they'll be in Las Vegas:

Filming in Palm Springs starts August 20th. Hollywood hopefuls tell us the production will only be in Palm Springs for 2 days before heading to Las Vegas.
