Matt Damon News Column
New York press tour continues
  • The promotion for Promised Land in New York has continued ahead of the press junket in LA next week. On Wednesday Matt, John and Gus attended a small press event to discuss the film prior to a PGA screening and Q&A with Chris Moore - reports are at HitFix, Coming Soon, Showbiz 411 and Movieline. Highlights below:

    Showbiz 411
Meantime, there’s “Promised Land” which Krasinski wrote with Matt Damon at their respective dining room tables. Since Damon has four daughters, Krasinski said he was very impressed by the Oscar winner’s focus considering that “four girls were constantly crawling all over him, and he was helping bathe and feed them.”

And lest you think “Promised Land” is anti-fracking movie, it’s not. While drilling for natural gas along the Marcellus shelf has been controversial, it’s also been financially advantageous for a lot of people needing money. “Promised Land” shows both sides.

One more thing: Krasinski says he and Damon considered for a minute having John’s wife, actress Emily Blunt, play the female lead in the film. But, John says: “Matt said she’d be perfect, then realized they’d just been in The Adjustment Bureau together.” Instead, they went with Rosemarie DeWitt, who had just co-starred with Blunt in “Your Sister’s Sister.”

    Coming Soon
Damon complimented Krasinski on the speed at which his brain worked in terms of trying to figure out the mechanics of the screenplay and we heard some amazing stories from both of them about their co-stars, Frances McDormand and Scoot McNairy.

Krasinski first met Damon through his wife, actress Emily Blunt, who had worked with Damon on "The Adjustment Bureau." Damon said that he was immediately impressed by the star of TV's "The Office," and that he reminded him of George Clooney. "For the longest time, everyone just knew Clooney from 'ER,'" he said. "And then everyone said, 'Why is Steven Soderbergh forming a company with the guy from 'ER?' And I think John is similar. He's very talented."

"Matt's been through the ringer with things being politicized," Krasinski said. "He told me early on, 'You know this is going to become a political thing.' And that's the last we said about it. A lot of it is just fact-based with no conservative or liberal agenda."

Damon, meanwhile, said it was moreover a movie about democracy. "Corporations may be bigger than ever but the power still lies with the people," he said. "So I think it's a pro-community movie."

Damon said that Promised Land was not a political movie but rather one about the democratic process. Regardless of the issue, he said, "if you don't engage, the decision will be made for you."

On the subject of engaging, Damon said that he and director David. O. Russell talked after the actor and director separately declared from the podium of the IFP Gotham Awards that they'd like to work with each other. The Bourne star was coy, however, about whether the meeting yielded anything more than mutual admiration. "I’m a huge, huge, huge fan of his," Damon said, adding: "I would love to work with him."

  • Reports on the TimesTalk yesterday are at the Village Voice and Wall Street Journal.

  • A late Gotham Awards interview is at USA Today:

It's the final season of NBC's The Office. And John Krasinski, who plays Jim, is both excited — and terrified — by what's ahead.

He and Matt Damon co-wrote and co-star in the drama Promised Land, about fracking, that opens in December. The whole endeavor started courtesy of Krasinski's wife Emily Blunt.

"Matt was working on The Adjustment Bureau with Emily. We got to know each other and quickly became good friends. We did a whole lot of double-dating with Matt and (his wife) Lucy and we got along really well. Matt had mentioned that he wanted to direct and asked me if I was working on anything. I told him about this. And we started writing pretty much right away," says Krasinski.

Damon interjects his reason for collaborating with Krasinski: "I only write with tall people."

  • Donna Freydkin of USA Today just interviewed Matt for an interview to appear closer to the film's release date, but included a quote in a new story about Brad Pitt:

    Donna Freydkin ‏@freydkin
Got to spend the afternoon with my favorite interviewee. Who's almost more of a pal than a story subject. #lovemyjob

    Matt on Brad
"He's the most normal guy. I spent a lot of time with him on those Ocean's movies – he doesn't do anything to drum up that insanity. He lives in the middle of that and he's somehow found a way to not go crazy. He's not crazy," confirms his friend Matt Damon, who had just seen Pitt.

"I don't know if that's his family or his upbringing and now it's become his children and his wife. It's incredible – seeing him yesterday, he's the same great guy from Missouri. I don't understand how he keeps doing great work. It would seem to me that you would lose your ability to be a human being. I genuinely don't know how he's still such a great guy, such a real guy."

  • A quote from Emily Blunt about John Krasinski at Interview magazine:

Blunt's husband, John Krasinski, wrote Matt Damon's new film, Promised Land, directed by Gus Van Sant; and Blunt is appropriately chuffed. "Isn't it incredible? I'm beyond proud."

    facebook search

I want to help. I´m not sure this is what you mean:

I found this photo in a regular facebook search, public posts.
I don´t know if this is due to location, or maybe you are talking about some kind of app I never heard of.

Your column is always great, and everybody is so great here, I´m glad if I can help... Although you hardly miss anything!!!

    Re: facebook search

Thanks Ceci and the poster above.

There's a couple of ways you can do a search of public Facebook posts, but the search engine is failing a lot recently (and has been down for days). Here's one search engine which doesn't require you to log in to Facebook:

    This webpage...

Is this Matt Damon's personal web-sight as in he personally loads the pictures and the new info. about his upcoming movies (since I know for a fact that he's the one that 'founded' the Water.Org) does anyone know? Also because the comments get deleted and new pictures get uploaded constantly. Just curious.

    Re: This webpage...

This is a fan website. Yes, Matt co-founded Water.org with Gary White - further information about that organisation is on the water.org website.

    Another article

    Missed this earlier:

As always, he thanked his stunning wife, Luciana Barroso, along with his children. During the award ceremony, Luciana was busy "playing Mom for the table" as described by onlookers. "She was busy pouring champagne for everyone, making sure everyone had what they needed". Guess Matt is a lucky man? Matt's moving speech concluded by saying "I have never taken this industry for granted and I never will... I'm truly blessed."

Another person John seemed to adore was Matt Damon, as he presented him with the male "Tribute" award. Praising Matt as one of his most beloved icons, the funny-man actor went on to say that "he is so infatuated with him, his children would be frightened if they knew how much." Emily scored an IFP Gotham Independent Film Award before the glowing duo headed out to celebrate.

    Re: Another article

That's cool about his wife, but I would do that too especially for Matt (except for being a MOM I never had the desire) but then again who wouldn't try to please if he was the husband?! She better make him happy and never take her luck for granted, that's all I want to say!

I'm interning at Warner Bros. currently and was walking across the studio lot a few weeks ago and nearly jumped out of my skin when I walked past the "shingle" for Pearl Street Films. Today I dropped by and introduced myself and gave the office a Promised Land poster (i work at a movie theater) for their empty office walls and met Jennifer's asst! I wanted to share this exciting little happening with you all!

    Krasinski interview

John Krasinski attended two promotional events in LA on Friday and gave a brief interview to USA Today:

"One of the best parts of the movie is that Matt had never been able to play this kind of part," Krasinski said, speaking at a Details magazine party honoring Hollywood mavericks Thursday. "He's a a self-loathing, broken and problematic character. We haven't seen this."

"I'm so excited for people to see Matt play this role, which has a lot of faults and a lot of problems," says Krasinski. "His character is trying to figure out his place in life. (Damon) has always wanted to play those parts."

Re: Krasinski interview, THR director's roundtable

The idea that Matt has never played a conflicted, dark character is quite odd. Has Krasinski never seen The Talented Mr Ripley or The Good Shepherd or The Departed? I would say dark characters have been some of his best roles, kind of a sub-specialty. You could even put Bourne into that category. But if Krasinski is trying to build anticipation it's working with me, as I'm getting more and more excited to see the film.

Anyway, putting that aside, I watched the unedited Hollywood Reporter's roundtable with directors yesterday and Matt was mentioned, once explicitly and once implicitly. Ben was talking about how a certain actor was a little crazy and checked his clothes for radiation with a geiger counter every day (any guesses? I'm guessing Juaquin Phoenix) And someone joked, "It's Matt Damon isn't it?" Another time Ben mentioned "I have a friend who's very talented and accomplished" and then proceeded to slightly misquote Matt's statement about preferring to be judged for how good his good ideas are rather than how bad his bad ideas are. That one is around the 53 minute mark if anyone wants to look and verify or correct my impression.

I thought it was interesting. Matt never seems to be too far from Ben's mind. And David O Russell was sitting next to Ben and was looking at him with such narrow interest. I could swear he was thinking, "Is he talking about Matt Damon?" Yes, David, he is!
