Monuments Men, Nespresso
  • The international premiere of The Monuments Men will be at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

    Nespresso, Elysium

Good news about the interview. An interview between Matt and George almost certainly will be great fun, and even has the potential to go viral, given good editing. Past joint interviews have been a blast.

I think this Nespresso deal is a very canny career move for Matt, irregardless of the money (which is likely to be going to charitable causes anyway). It raises his profile internationally in a classy, fun way. It is also likely to increase interest in Monuments Men, which certainly wouldn't have been lost on George.

Speaking of Matt's international box office, it's lovely to note that Elysium has outgrossed Bourne Legacy world wide. :-) Did you post that earlier? Sorry if you did, but it still bears repeating. ELYSIUM HAS OUTGROSSED BOURNE LEGACY WORLD WIDE. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Universal.

And Elysium was an original property, not a pre-sold offshoot from a hugely successful franchise.

    Re: Photos

Why doesnt Matt just go with the flow and walk around like a normal family instead of trying to escape the inevitable - paps at Brentwood Market on Sunday morning. The Afflecks take the paps in stride when out on their frequent market jaunts- why cant Matt?

    Re: Photos

Because he's not used to paparazzi following him, tracking his movements and photographing his children. He said if he gets photographed too much he will leave LA, and he's starting to act vary wary in public. Ben and family are photographed constantly and accept that it's their life - Matt doesn't want to expose his kids to it (who are still rightfully wary of photographers and don't play up to them, like Ben's kids).

    George's Esquire interview

Tom Junod has done a profile of George Clooney for Esquire, and there's a few Matt references.

    http://www.esquire.com/features/george-clooney-interview-1213

A few months ago, I spent time with Matt Damon while he was on the set of The Monuments Men, and he told a story about Russell Crowe and George Clooney. It involved Clooney reading a poem by Crowe on the night of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, with uproarious results. It was a great story but not, well, a true one. I told this to Clooney, and he said, “Matt’s a storyteller.” Then he said, “The truth is that [Crowe] did send me a book of poems to apologize for insulting the shit out of me, which he did. He picked a fight with me. He started it for no reason at all. He put out this thing saying, ‘George Clooney, Harrison Ford, and Robert De Niro are sellouts.’ And I put out a statement saying, ‘He’s probably right. And I’m glad he told us, ’cause Bob and Harrison and I were also thinking about starting a band, which would also fall under the heading of bad use of celebrity.’ And that’s when he really went off on me. ‘Who the fuck does this guy think he is? He’s a Frank Sinatra wannabe.’ He really went after me. And so I sent him a note going, ‘Dude, the only people who succeed when two famous people are fighting is People magazine. What the fuck is wrong with you?’

“But then I had a year. Then I had Syriana and Good Night, and Good Luck, and he was gonna see me at the Golden Globes ’cause he was nominated for Cinderella Man. So he sends me a disc of his music and a thing of his poetry. I think he said, ‘I was all misquoted,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah. Whatever.’ I did take it with me to the BAFTAs, but I didn’t win. I might have used it if I had won. I was nominated for four!”

    Re: George's Esquire interview

Great basketball story. It seems like George is trying to send a warning to DiCaprio about the choices he is making and the people he surrounds himself with. I've noticed in photos over the last couple of years that hard partying is really aging Leo. And in pap photos he often looks completely miserable. Even though he's a big star he strikes me as a victim of fame. He has no anchor (of course, that is also his own choice), and wasn't blessed with the kind of parents Matt has.

He got famous waaaay too young to keep a good perspective.

    Nespresso Ad

Just seen the ad. No sign of Matt :( good fun though. Poor Matt paparazzi really hounding him and his family. Plenty of celebrities court this kind of attention, wish they would leave him alone and go after them. How many pics do we need of him picking up his kids from school! Marcia

    Paparazzi

I knew that Matt and his family would have a hard time with the paps a little more in L.A. And I wish that they stayed in NYC though but, he has the works with Ben in L.A. so...

    Re: Paparazzi

Well, there's not much on the Ben front happening. Matt came to LA, Ben then signed up for two major movies to be mostly filmed out of LA and a new directing project that doesn't include Matt. Their TV projects wouldn't have much crossover either.

    Re: Paparazzi

Yeah, Matt probably underestimated the paparazzi interest in LA. Poor guy.
LA doesn't suit them to me; I hope they move back to New York where they weren't hounded so much. Or even Boston. I'm sure he and Ben can Skype when they need to, lol.

Speaking of Interstellar, the Nolan fans website is reporting that the first teaser trailer will be released with the Hobbit on Dec 11.

The location for Interstellar is for filming rather than a social group, but Matt is supposedly there.

I am hoping for some more shooting with Matt in LA. More shooting means more Matt in the movie.

    Re: Interstellar, Foreigner

I think he was also on set a few weeks ago in LA.

Has anyone else seen the random comments over the last couple of months on Twitter that Christopher Nolan is co-directing The Foreigner with Matt? It would almost make sense - the studio has apparently been unwilling to commit to giving Matt his directing debut on such a large-scale film.

    Re: Interstellar, Foreigner

Really?? I hadn't seen anything like that. I don't know quite how to feel about that possibility. It is obviously a complex film for a first time director to cut his teeth on. But that seems an odd arrangement. A bit riskier than taking it on himself in terms of public perception. And there are several other directors that a Matt has a longer relationship with.

If it's good, some will give all the credit to Nolan. If it's not, Matt is certain to get the blame. But then, Matt seems to have an almost superhuman ability to remove his ego from his career decisions.

And Nolan might be the only director with the pull to get it made.

Were these tweets from people who would be in a position to know anything with certainty or was it just idle chitchat?

    Re: Interstellar, Foreigner

I've seen the same thing posted over a few months from different random people, but maybe they're just confusing the two stories that were released on the same day (directing job/Interstellar). And Nolan would still be finishing Interstellar until November 2014.
