Matt Damon News Column
  • A few reports from the Children's Defense Fund gala are at the LA Times and Society News LA.

The star-studded A-list affair at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Thursday included numerous long time CDF supporters, plus newcomers to the cause, such as Matt Damon, who said he and his wife, Luciana Barroso, were there for the first time at the invitation of friends and looking forward to the program.

As an admirer of Matt Damon’s films, I enjoyed the opportunity to talk with the “Bourne” star, who said he came at the invitation of friends, naming Abrams among them. I only wish I’d thought to ask him about Nelson Mandela, as he starred as the rugby captain in “Invictus,” and no doubt would have met South Africa’s remarkable president, who died earlier on the day of the dinner.

The event raised $1 million, with 420 guests, tickets priced from $500 and tables available for as much as $100,000. Students will each receive a $10,000 college scholarship, in addition to support services.

  • A few quotes from Ben's interview in Playboy.

PLAYBOY: Matt Damon has been your friend since you were eight. What’s the value in a long-term friendship like that?
AFFLECK: I probably can’t overstate the degree to which he’s been helpful, even in that it’s psychologically good to have somebody you trust, who’s going through it too, who can understand what you’re going through and whose opinion you respect. Matt just moved down the street from me, so he lives closer to me now than when we were growing up together in Boston. Our kids hang out together; we have barbecues. I was at his place two nights ago. Having a friend you’ve been connected to since you were a little kid, that’s grounding. Matt and my brother Casey are the two people I rely on the most, emotionally and professionally.

PLAYBOY: Isn’t there a competitive nature between you? Who wins at poker?
AFFLECK: I’m still the better poker player, probably, though neither of us plays much anymore. Matt was talking about getting a game going in his house. Yeah, we’re competitive, but we learned to handle it early on. We would take the train from Boston to New York to audition. We both felt, Look, I want to get the part, but if it’s not me, I want it to be you. It was a healthy way of acknowledging you want what you want, but you’re also rooting for the other guy.

  • Photos of Matt and Lucy leaving The Ivy on Saturday after lunch with friends are at Isopix and Newscom. A sighting from last Sunday is at OK magazine:

Recent Angeleno Matt Damon, wife Luciana Bozán Barroso, and two friends popped by Casa Vega for an upbeat and casual Sunday lunch. The baseball cap-clad actor ordered a couple rounds of Cadillac Margaritas and beers for the group, and they all enjoyed steak tacos and guacamole.

Is anyone else annoyed about Matt's inclusion on the Forbest list of the most overpaid actors (although Matt said in 2007 when he was top of the other list he would be on this list one day).

Forbes takes the box office of the last three movies before 30 June.

quote: We used data gathered from our Celebrity 100 research and Box Office Mojo to calculate how much, on average, each star's last three films earned at the box office per dollar of pay.

For Matt they place him at equal eighth with Jennifer Aniston and use a photo from Behind the Candelabra, which wasn't even released theatrically in the US. If they are taking the last three theatrical movies it would be Promised Land, We Bought a Zoo and Happy Feet Two (or Margaret if voice actor not included and Contagion if a cameo was not included). Promised Land was made for about $16m and Matt worked for scale, Zoo did fine for probably not a huge salary and the others were voice or cameos, and Contagion also did fine. It's funny maths and a strange interpretation to include Matt (and some of the others) on this list.

    Re: Forbes

It is pretty silly for him to be on that list. He should at least get an asterisk, since Elysium made almost $300 million since then. I think Sandler also had a hit movie since then. Ridiculous. They probably figure "average salary" to be an actor's agent quote, which is the highest salary they ever get, and Matt (and probably many other actors) often works for much less, as you point out. Lazy reporting.

It'll be nice to see Matt at the SAGs. It seems like it's been awhile since he's been there. Was he nomd for Invictus?

    Re: Forbes

Just checked. Matt was nominated for a SAG award for Invictus (and lost to Christopher Waltz). He didn't go to the ceremony, but did go to the SAG Awards for True Grit the following year (and also went for GWH).

Jennifer Aniston has also had a big hit since the cut-off date. Ridiculous list.

    Re: Forbes

yep the other thing dumb about the list is it's only for a certain timeframe of a few years, so they also have to use actors who have worked during that timeframe. So basically all the hardest working people on that list. lame.
