New Kenneth Lonergan project announced
  • Matt will commence shortly a new project for director Kenneth Lonergan. Details at the Hollywood Reporter:

Matt Damon is set to reteam with writer-director Kenneth Lonergan, this time for a drama titled Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Sources say Gigi Pritzker, who is on hand at the Toronto Film Festival with Jon Stewart's directorial debut Rosewater, is close to signing a deal to produce and fully finance Manchester-by-the-Sea through her OddLot Entertainment.

OddLot, whose recent credits include Draft Day and Ender’s Game, is ramping up its output to 3-4 films a year in the less-than-$20 million range.

The elements came together very quickly, and pre-production is set to begin Monday for a fall shoot.

Lonergan is directing his own script, which is said to be tonally similar to You Can Count On Me, his 2000 breakthrough drama that starred Mark Ruffalo and Laura Linney and which earned Lonergan a Oscar nomination for original screenplay.

In Manchester, Damon will play a Boston-living ne’er-do-well plumber who is forced to return home to the titular town after he learns his brother passed away. (Damon is a Boston native.) There, he finds himself thrust into the care of the man’s 16-year old son but finds himself crumbling due to a secret tragedy in his past.

Damon will slip the movie in before he rockets to The Martian, a Fox sci-fi drama being directed byRidley Scott that is due to start in November.

  • Jessica Chastain and Kristin Wiig are in talks to join The Martian.

  • Ben confirms that the Whitey Bulger project with Matt is not going forward.

  • Matt will join Tom Papa's comedy show in LA on Tuesday.

    Re: Lonergan

And hopefully the structure of the film deal will give him the ability to put out the film he wants on his terms. Now we wait to see where it will film, although presumably on the east coast in line with Lonergan's other films.

    Re: Lonergan

Empire reports that it's Matt's character who is given the care of his nephew, instead of the other way around. That makes more sense. Curious to see who will be cast as the teenager.

    Re: Lonergan

Empire story, which mentions that filming will begin in about a month:

Lonergan is working from a script he wrote that finds Damon as a plumber living in Boston who returns home to the titular town when he learns his brother has died. He’s landed with the responsibility of caring for his 16-year-old nephew, but a dark family tragedy from the past comes back to haunt him.

With Ender’s Game backers OddLot Entertainment providing the cash to make the film, Lonergan has worked quickly on this one, ramping up pre-production ready to kick off shooting in a month or so.

This article claims scenes will be shot in Boston, but gives no other details.

so disappointed, i've been swapped with work lately at a new job leaving late, so i hesitated to buy tickets to the TOM PAPA show Tue night, and now it's SOLD OUT. They've put a 10/6 show on sale. I'm wondering if Matt will return. It's the day after my birthday and a few days before matt's. as for the Tue show, they don't do refunds so I don't see how any tickets would become available :(

Bad luck Gregory (but good news for Tom). Matt may be filming in MA for the next show.

    Papa show, Lonergan film

    Too bad Gregory. :-(

This Lonergan project seemed to appear so out of the blue. Suddenly it became a really busy fall for Matt! When do you think they will start shooting?

What a shame, Greg. I am so sorry. There's no way you could have predicted it.

    House of Lies

For Australian readers, Matt's episode of 'House of lies' finally airs on Foxtel this week.

    Martian script

Best line in the Martian script so far (many thanks Gregory):

Bruce hurries across the JPL campus. In the background, DEER frolic. (NOTE: this is real. Deer frolic out in the open on the JPL grounds. NOTE: It's awesome.)

The script is just a supercharged version of the book (same names, characters). It's very funny with a beautiful ending.

    Re: Martian script

Excellent news about the script! I was hoping they could catch the charm of the book, which has a very canny balance of locations, characters, humor, action, suspense and drama. Particularly the Watney character is such a unique one. Completely down to earth, but so admirable in his intelligence and determination, plus his great down-to-earth wit. A great part for Matt.

Glad to hear about the ending. I thought that was a potential source of difficulty.

But now you make me want to read it! No, No! Must... Resist! Lol.

If you don't mind, I do have a couple of questions. What percentage of the screen time do you think Matt will have? Did reading it give any insights into who Chastain or Wiig might be playing? Any further thoughts on casting?

    Re: Martian script

The ending was my least favorite part of the book and they really fixed it (if it's not changed significantly).

The only substantial characters are really in the NASA headquarters, and Mindy Park as the scientist is probably the leading female role (more suited to Wiig). Jessica Chastain shouldn't be the lead astronaut but they may cast younger and less substantial. There are some good government male roles at NASA.

Matt's probably only solo for about half the time, and they use a couple of ways to cover the inner dialogue. (I may be wrong on the timing, but it's not Cast Away and they introduce the wider world pretty quickly.) There's one role that makes you think Philip Seymour Hoffman, and that will be a fun one to cast (wacky scientist).

    Re: Martian script

My only concerns were the ending and how they would represent the inner dialogue. It sounds like those were both fixed, so there's every reason to be optimistic. Thanks.

apparently matt and ben are in toronto - https://twitter.com/nikolinapapa/status/508625836803915776 could be doppelgängers or maybe they're doing project greenlight-related stuff at the festival

glad to hear there's no story to chris moore's absence from project greenlight:

What’s going on with this dueling revival of Project Greenlight? Any beef?!

Well, look. We’re all friends, we’re all supportive of each other. And there certainly have been many attempts to bring back Project Greenlight, and to be honest, I gave up trying to figure that shit out years ago. But it was not a surprise that they finally figured it out. The truth of the matter was, I wasn’t available. I’m trying to show how complicated and diverse storytelling is, and it’s totally different than Project Greenlight. But of course I’m happy for them and I’m happy they got it sold and I hope audiences are ready to watch both shows. Those guys are still good friends of mine, but there was no way I could work with them on it.

Matt and Ben, I still work with and see them, and there’s no good stories there. They’re married, they got kids. I think Ben’s turned into one of the best American directors alive. And Matt remains one of the best movie stars on earth. There’s not a lot of stories. I did get a few calls and gave a few answers to people when Robin Williams passed away. That was really tragic.

    I think false

There's usually one false sighting in Toronto each year and Matt was sighted in LA today.
