Sorry just have to share this one. Paul Thomas Anderson and Matt Damon are at my bar last night and start arguing about the length of movies. I interject that its not the movie making that has changed, its the attention span of the audience. I bring up Lars Von Trier, Kurosawa, and Lawrence of Arabia and Paul asks me if I'm an actor. Before I can answer Don Cheadle asks me to go upstairs and pick out few more wines. He then turns to Matt and says, it's too bad Brad couldn't make it. ‪#‎nameDrop‬ ‪#‎Brentwood

    Come To Papa 12/2

Reporting in for all vicarious readers

"Come To Papa" tonight in LA was as entertaining as the past 2 I attended.
Tonight's guests were Matt Damon, Melissa Villasenor, Sarah Silverman, Michael Sheen, Maria Bamford, Steve Agee, Kathleen Madigan, & Tim Minchin. There was less stand-up comedy this time I think cause there were more skits.

The night started off with Steve Agee doing the voice of Santa along with his drab elf in a mall setting of "Santa's Winter Wonderland". Melissa Villasenor came out doing the voice of Kathy Griffin who wanted something for Christmas, Tom Papa who wanted a bicycle for Christmas, and then Sara Silverman who though being Jewish, has been a fan of Santa since she was a little girl and merely wanted a photo with Santa. To everyone Santa denied requests and photos. Then Matt came out saying his kids were excited to see Santa, but Santa said since he didn't see them he was going to deny Matt, But Matt being in the Christmas spirit granted Tom his bike and and Griffin whatever she wanted, and seeing Sarah said "Wow you look Great!! Geesh it's been years what 2007 on the floor, up against the wall or something? Oh and my kids love Wreck It Ralph could I get a autographed copy for them?" To which she said sure, and he followed by saying "And I'll give you an autographed copy of Promised Land" and she said "No Thanks" and he said, "It's not problem at all, in fact I have one for all of you (referencing all on stage)" and they all moaned. It was fun skit that got lost in my translation but Matt was the good guy and Santa was a nasty mall Santa.

The second skit Matt participated in was when Papa brought out Melissa Villasenor (who nails every imitation she does) to sing various classic Christmas songs with the following female singers. Villasenor lit into imitations of Christina Aguilera (over the top pipes), Brittany Spears (breathy & awkward), Bjork (staccato Home For the Holidays), Shakira (struggling English Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas) And as he's done in the past, Papa brought Damon out to join in with her but howso you ask? Well... Papa said let's bring out Arnold Schwarzenegger and out comes Damon doing a full-on vocal imitation of Arnie with his Austrian/American accent. "GREAT" "I AM WISHING YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS" and so forth. I was in stitches. First off, who knew he could do a spot on imitation of Arnie and 2nd because it was hilarious with Shakira. When it was over Papa even said "incredible likeness to Arnold".

    Re: Come To Papa 12/2

The next skit was with Steve Agee, just as Papa has paired them together in the past. However I thought the skit fell a bit flat called "Jesus Texts". Papa said, imagine what texts would have been like if they'd existed when Christ was born. So Agee and Damon started saying funny texts that people may have texted had they been there with hashtags. For instance a text from Joseph would have been "I need a DNA test #emmaculateconception" etc Some were funny some were not.

Then Matt participated in a 7 days of Christmas where the whole cast came out and sang the medley to 12 Days of Christmas but with modern twists and silliness. Matt had the 5th day of Christmas where he sang "On the 5th day of Christmas my true love gave to me 5 (Bill) Cosby roofies".

Matt was funny as usual and in good spirit, more fit (No asto-piñata), and ever so slight slimmer fit solid blue jeans. The crowd went nuts when he came out, I think some didn't know he was there as he was added later to the bill.

Kathleen Madigan did some very funny standup about how in Ireland no one is motivated. She asked for corn in pub once with her roast beef and the 75 year old bartender said he had some when he was 9 in Germany and didn't care for it much (cause they don't have corn in Ireland) and how she went into a Bagel shop but no bagels for sale and when she asked the shopkeeper was there anything else to buy the answer was no, and then why are you open? and the shopkeeper said so in case someone wanted to have some conversation and such. She made fun of the Sarah McLachlan animal rescue ad here in the states with it's melodramatic tone but not enough to motivate people to donate. She was funny.

Tim Minchin particpated in the 7 days of Christmas skit and then did his own form of 10min standup by sitting at the piano and singing 2 songs with funny lyrics. He was a great singer/piano player. His one song was about Jesus and the miracles he performed but the lyrics were funny about him coming back to life etc. so throwing in lines like Jesus a great Woody Allen Jew who was a zombie. It was just funny stuff.

Sarah's standup, was like she was trying out new material and talked about quick topics. One of which was sex saying she doesn't like talking dirty in bed, but likes talking dirty after sex like getting in her boyfriends face who's a foreigner and saying "America's #1" to which he replies "at what?" And she'll say "it doesn't matter trail-off... juvenile diabetes and other things"

Michael Sheen did a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" with Papa in tow, but while reading realized some of the lines changed out to song lyrics from Taylor Swift and Salt and Pepper. Sheen faux frustrated said what's the meaning of this. Papa said, it's what all the kids are doing mashups. Sheen brought some funny sophistication to the show. Crowd loved him.

Papa did his Christmas version of Andy Rooney of 60 minutes piece.

Afterwards some people lingered in the courtyard outside. It was drizzling so some dissipated. I waited though to see Matt exit with Lucy, who was there & made up with red lipstick. She looked great. I was so tempted to try to get a photo with him & her, but she separated herself from his as a few people began to approach him for photos this time. I snapped a photo or two and he looked up and saw me snapping. It's hard cause he was gracious as he moved through the light crowd, but you don't want to be too aggressive & then other people step in the way and he keeps moving 360 degrees as he moves on. Lighting is crappy & seconds matter. I hesitated but then just before he slipped through the door leading to the VIP bar, I sorta grabbed his clothed upper arm (his bicep to be exact) and said, "Matt can I get a quick selfie with you" to which he replied "Sure" leaned back and...

Hopefully ya’ll catch my shout out on Instagram too.

let me now if these photos come through. i never know how to do this correctly.

    Come To PaPA

Great reporting Gregory! I was there too. Happened to be in LA for business. (All the way from Mi) and was lucky enough to get tickets. Matt looked very fit and trim. His haircut made him look really young. I waited a few minutes after the show, but it was raining and wasn't sure if matt would come out the main door so I left. Wish I would have stayed!

Great show and very cool venue. So glad I was able to attend.

Thanks a lot! That is awesome that you attended too and can attest to the hilarity that ensued. I did see a few wait as well and then leave. Were you with a guy in white coat? or with a red umbrella?

    Minnie Driver

Minnie looks back at Good Will Hunting:

    Good Will Hunting (1997)
“I actually watched four or five scenes of Good Will Hunting over this dude’s shoulder on the plane the other day. Matt [Damon] and Ben [Affleck] had this incredible, innocent enthusiasm and love for what they were doing. It’s not like we knew we were making this movie that would be a classic. At the time, Miramax was genuinely turned towards Jackie Brown. We were the total redheaded stepchild. They weren’t paying attention to us until the movie was made, and then they really sat up when they saw it.”
