Re: The Martian

Am I seeing through the misty rose tinted lenses as a rabid "Martian" fan or are these, indeed, terrific?

Some of them look almost painterly in their depth and vividness. I particularly love the one with Matt (with beard) splayed out against the truck tire, exhausted.

Also adore the one with him striding toward the camera, with the Martian landscape reflected in the visor. Love all the detail on the suit. It's details like that demonstate Scott's artistry. Does anybody know offhand if Scott has a regular cinematographer or does he do it himself?

And when Matt's leaning down in the dark. Gorgeous, gorgeous, blackish-blue tones, and I like that I can't quite figure out what he's doing. Are those taters?! (Anybody who's read the book will understand)

And the one with him seated, looking out at the landscape. Total isolation. You know, I've seen lots of Mars movies, and I can't remember anybody ever sitting down on those many rocks!

The HAB (artificial habitat - group photo)) looks a lot tidier than I had pictured. I don't think I've ever seen Matt strike an arms akimbo 'hero' stance like that before.

Also glad to see that puffy space-suit Interstellar Matt has been replaced with svelte, handsome Martian Matt. Not that I'm shallow or anything. :-)

There was some thought that a teaser trailer might come with Tomorrowland. Anybody heard anything?

Finally, we got some goodies! Thanks, everybody!
Paula

Re: The Martian

Paula,
After seeing all these pictures I got super excited and read the script! It was excellent!!!
It is going to really showcase a lot of Matt's acting chops and humor. I couldn't imagine anyone else in the part. And we even get a moment of him crying (as Matt does so well). His character doesn't have a significant other I noticed (only his parents). Unusual for a stranded protagonist?!

All the photos I think look cool, and I too appreciated their artistic nature.

Did you notice, there are two versions of him striding toward the camera? The Empire version & EW version are slightly different (look at his arms and eye line and you'll notice they're not the same). The Empire one has quite a strong presence. I was really impressed with that being the first still shot I saw from the movie.

The one of him leaning down looking in the dark is my 2nd favorite photo. Taters indeed! Beautiful composition.

I also like the photo of him kneeling down looking at the red dirt.

Why did you picture the HAB to be less tidy? It only becomes a wreck with Mark in it alone. His stance in that photo as you point out with arms akimbo 'hero' pose got my attention too. Did he pose like that in Brothers Grimm?

I too was impressed with the svelte space suit (getting back to the striding photo), it's very cool looking and he looks great. All his thinning down sure paid off.
What was the name for Dr. Mann something piñata?

I asked a projectionist friend if she knew about a teaser trailer released this Memorial Day weekend with Tomorrowland and she said NO. It must be forthcoming though with all the photos released this weekend.

Re: The Martian

Gregory,

Glad to hear you loved the script! I think I will not read it, as I tend to start building visual images for myself and then can get disappointed by shots in a film. The humor is one of the delightful surprises of the book. Glad they have been faithful to the book and haven't shoehorned in an SO.

You are probably right about the two different versions on EW and Empire.

(Potential SPOILERS) I actually like that the look of the HAB surprised me. It's visually strong and, and as you say, the clinical look makes a certain amount of storytelling sense, especially as there will be a contrast with what comes later. I can't remember, there may be something similar in Brothers Grimm. It would fit that character. Here it may be a reaction to bad news.

One of the reasons I'm so taken with the Watney-on-the-rock photo is that it's not taken from the book (that I can remember) but it's an incredibly striking visual which makes perfect sense for the character and vividly demonstrates his isolation. And that's encouraging!

Dr. Mann was an astro-piñata. No wonder he was in a hurry to get off that planet. "Does this planet make me look fat?" Dude, it totally does! Lol.

Thanks for asking your friend. It's OK, there is lots in these photos to feed on!

Re: The Martian

"astro-piñata" and "does this planet make me look fat" are for the record books!!!!!
Wait... didn't you read the script? I thought you were teasing me for not reading it for months? I'm confused now. hah, was it the book you've been wanting me to read?
So you're saying in the book there is no scene of him sitting outside on rocks?
Yeah the EW photo and Empire photo are different. The Empire one is a stride, the EW one he's just standing. Just don't want anyone to dismiss them as the same photo.
Is there a way I can private message you? Are you on Facebook or email?

Re: The Martian

Yes, it's the BOOK I've been harassing you about. Oh, Gregory, Gregoy, Gregory, just like my hubby, you guys never listen! :-)

Kidding, it's all good!

In the book he spends tons of time outdoors, but I don't recall him ever sitting outside and taking in the glory of Mars - he's too freaking busy trying to keep it from killing him to spend a lot of time admiring it. But, like I say it's a glorious and effective visual that says more than a thousand words ever could about his situation. That's why it thrills me. Film is a visual medium and the book needs adapting into that format, which is where the artistry comes in. I read a wonderful discussion about that by Anthony Minghella once.

I have just one question re script. Does it start with a profanity? Because it should!

I'd be glad to pm with you, but I'm not crazy about randomly putting my email online. Perhaps there is some way we could privately go through this site?

Do you or Felicity have any thoughts? I'm kind of tech challenged.

Re: The Martian

Hi, guys. First posting here but been watching every effort of yours.
I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott and this site is the best source about The Martian film I could ever find. You guys totally rock!
And since these "goodies"(hehe) have been released I have searched peoples reactions and reactions and you know some bookworms seem to have a few issues already. like the suit looks too science "fiction". unlike traditional bulky one from the cover of the book. but you know what? according to the costume designer, there will be two kinds of suit in the film. one is an EVA suit like we seen already in the stills AND the other is a flight suit which is more traditional puffy marshmallow man. Nice. ;-)
So when it comes to the difference between the book and the script(I read the book only btw) they changed something in the book.
Jessica mentioned this from the interview before filming without any significant details. But I am not gonna tell which is which here. :-)
(but it's nothing really. haha)
anyway can't wait for the incredible looking teaser!
(ah, wait anyone here dvd extras lover? Charles de Lauzirika is a "king" of this sorta documentary making. He has produced that of almost every Ridley Scott and David Lynch films. And he did some podcast interview couple months ago. and while he was modest about Ridleys last film Exodus saying it was beautifully made, he also said Ridley's next film The Martian is gonna be incredible. Yes pretty nice to hear it, eh? haha.)

Re: The Martian

Welcome, Lee!

Glad you posted. It's good to share resources. If I may ask, where did you see people having issues with the space suit? People are crazy, the petty things they can think to complain about! Like a science fiction suit that looks too "fiction-y"! Hilarious! I think it looks gorgeous, with interesting and unusual patterning. Who needs more Sta-Puff Marshmallow men, right?
You can tell them that Andy Weir said he had almost nothing to do with the covers (Different countries have different covers) and so maybe this is exactly what Weir thinks NASA suits will look like in 30 to 50 years. Ha.

My favorite ridiculous thing I've seen posted (it's so crazy it's got to be the same guy posting over and over in comment sections) is that this movie is "ripping off" a cheesy 60's sci-fi B movie called, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars". I saw that movie back in the day and even then it was so dumb. The co-star was a monkey! And this guy angrily insisted that I was a cultural illiterate and the book "The Martian" didn't exist! It was so funny!

Interesting about the two different suits.

The cinematography looks amazing in these shots.

I will try to check out de Lauzirika. Is he on YouTube?

Re: The Martian

Hi Lee! Welcome aboard :)
This site is also the best for Matt Damon thanks to our fearless Admin Felicity!

"astro-piñata = puffy marshmallow man" ROTFL

Paula - ok so now you can harass me for not listening and reading the book, but at least I now read the script! Now, neither of us know the difference(s) between the two since you've read one and I've read the other, haha.

This isn't a spoiler alert cause you've seen him sitting in the photo, but yes there is some taking in the glory of Mars shots in the script :) Also the first line of dialogue in the script is not profanity and it's not spoken by Watney (it's dialogue that sets up what has happened) but it is the 2nd line of dialogue that belongs to Watney and it is profanity.

Paula - if you don't post as "anonymous" and create a login for Live Journal we can private message one another via Live Journal.

Re: The Martian

Felicity is the greatest!

I'm so relieved about the profanity! Because that's just the way I roll. Lol. No, but, seriously, it's the incredibly catchy way the book starts, and it just wouldn't be the same without it!

Ok, we have people coming for dinner so I can't do it now, but will create an account later. I should've done it before anyway. Just lazy.

Re: The Martian

That was from... Reddit. Yea, I dug for nothing. People always find things to complain. But some answered back like they are developing skin tight space suit for real so fair enough, I guess. And comes to my mind, as you mentioned (my bad!), Weir did mention the cover and if I recall correctly, it was even a publisher, not him that chose that image for the cover! lol. and it doesn't even have cameras unlike from the book! duh.

I'm not sure by de Lauzirika is on YouTube, you mean he's running a channel at there? Not really but he's on Twitter for sure! And here's his impression on Matt during filming The Martian.
