Matt Damon News Column
  • From an interview at the Bangalore Mirror:

We've talked a little about the physical challenge of the role. What was it like shooting day-to-day? Those space suits look pretty uncomfortable.
Matt: Ridley made it really easy. There were days where there was a little discomfort here and there. I got a little hot when we got to Jordan and we were outside in the desert. But we had cooling suits underneath that could mitigate some of that. I think this movie would have been unbearable with a different director, with someone who's not really sure of himself. It would have taken about three times as long and would have been a much harder shoot, but with someone like Ridley, you know, he's got four cameras going at once and he is just charging forwards with an absolute definitive vision of what he wants, and is communicating that to all his department heads. It's just fun, it really is fun.

Ridley shot the film in 3D, which for a story like this adds another layer. Are you a fan of 3D?
I haven't seen this in 3D yet, but Ridley was really bullish about it. He was excited about it, and we shot in 3D, with the 3D cameras, and he was really into it, so I'm reserving my judgment. I haven't seen a lot of things in 3D, and I guess everyone is starting to think about shooting in 3D now, so hopefully the films will get better. I mean, I think we're all still learning about it.

Is the next film The Great Wall? Have you finished that now?
Yeah, it's done. I'm really happy with it, and again I was working with another great director (Yimou Zhang).

Could you sum up the experience of making The Martian?
It was great. Just selfishly, I got to go to two new countries that I haven't been to, and I had a fantastic experience in both, and I'd go back to either and shoot in them in a New York minute. I really loved both places. But most of it is down to Ridley. He made it so fun, and I learned so much watching him. Just to work with a master is a blessing.

  • A cool new Martian promotion: a plant in a can:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

An actual plant in a can arrived for Matt Damon's new sci-fi, The Martian. I have to open the lid and water it to grow.

    The Martian

Interesting that Matt says he's "reserving my judgment" of the 3D. It got a bad rep because it was overused by people who don't know what they're doing, but Ridley has shot several movies with it. I expect to see it in both 3D and regular format.

In more great marketing, Fox sent the crew on ISS the movie. So not only does the whole world get to see The Martian before the U.S. does, so do people in space!

I told my boyfriend, october 2nd, we are going to see that movie!
He doesn't think it looks all that interesting, i told him he's crazy.

Australian interview about life with Lucy, sick kids, and a 'spectacular' week of shooting Bourne 5:

    Oscar contenders:

Is there a more reliable actor in Hollywood than Matt Damon? But consistency is the enemy of enterprise, and Damon has often, with the notable exception of Behind the Candelabra, failed to stretch himself. He does just that in The Martian, delivering the most charismatic and confident performance of his career as Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut who’s left for dead on Mars by his crew. Unlike his jarring, thinly-drawn marooned asshole in Interstellar, Damon is a total revelation here. That the first half-hour of the film—consisting of Watney struggling with the elements, and attempting to grow plants—is its most compelling speaks volumes. The Martian is Ridley Scott’s monument to Damon’s charm and likability, and is every bit as good a turn as Sandra Bullock’s in Gravity.

    The Martian radio interview

Brief radio interview with Matt (journalist is a big fan of the film). Not a whole lot that's new, but Matt does talk about the Cubs. Ha. Starts about the 1 hour, 29 minute mark.

    The Martian screenings

Lots of screenings for The Martian today, and many very positive tweets. I think I saw only a couple that were so-so. Everyone else was knocked out.

    Here's one

    Martian promo materials

Even more Martian goodies being given away - I think that's a Rover key-ring and little potatoes? A UK competition I think.

Harry Knowles at Ain't it cool news has posted his rave review, and includes some comments about the screening and meeting a former co-worker of Andy's:

    RE: AICN

Wow, that is just about the most extreme rave ever. But I understand. True love shouldn't be distant and measured.

Guardian has an article about Oscar noms and picks The Martian as "likely" to receive noms for Best Picture and Best Actor. For whatever reason livejournal won't let me post it.

    Bourne location

A possible tip to future Bourne locations. I've seen the London rumor before:

    RE: Bourne shooting

This is some more promo footage. It looks fantastic - but I only watched the first ten seconds because it seemed too spoilery. I'm not sure how much is taken from the film. But it reeks of quality.

    Anne Thompson interview

Video interview with Anne Thompson, done at TIFF. She is obviously a big fan of the film.

    Re: Anne Thompson interview

Praise and awards talk for the film is annoying Jeffrey Wells, who described The Martian as having the depth of a jacuzzi, and will now wage an ongoing war against its awards prospects.
