Matt Damon News Column
  • An Australian interview with Matt is at news.com.au, including:

The family relocated from New York City to the coastal suburb of Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles last year. “The kids are thriving in LA. They love it,” he says.

It’s hard to believe it’s been eight years since the last time we saw Damon as Jason Bourne, in The Bourne Ultimatum. Fans of the franchise can rejoice that he’s currently shooting the untitled fifth instalment (still untitled) due for release next year.

“I trained a lot, more than I ever had on any of the Bourne films,” he says. “I had to be really physically fit and really lean so it was a lot of work for me to get there.” Damon’s weight seems to fluctuate with great regularity. “Well, being a dad is an occupation hazard. I end up eating the kids’ macaroni and cheese and chicken fingers,” he happily admits.

“We’ve just done one week of shooting and it was spectacular,” he says, grinning. “It’s been great to slip into that old skin again. Hopefully it’ll be as good as the other three films. The others take place over a two-year period so technically this is Jason Bourne back after twelve years, and so it really separates it from the others.” He smiles. “And Jason has grey hair now so I didn’t have to dye my hair, thankfully. I actually got to use my own grey hair in a movie.”

The Martian, based on the best-selling novel of the same name, is one of the few movies that is suitable for Damon to show his kids. “I was very excited about taking my 17-year-old to the premiere in Toronto last week and I’m excited to make something that my kids can see. Other than Happy Feet 2 (in which he voiced the character of Bill the Krill, in 2011), there hasn’t been much.”

  • Audio and video interviews with Matt: with Dean Richards and Anne Thompson.

  • Articles on the Oscars chances for Matt and The Martian are at: Daily Beast, LA Times and Awards Daily. There will be a preview of The Martian at the New York Film Festival this weekend. The London premiere is on Thursday.

    The Martian promotion

Nice - they gave a special screening to the Indian space agency. I wonder if the Chinese space agency will get screenings as well, as they are a subplot in the book.
