Box office tracking for The Martian

Variety has released the first box office tracking numbers that I've seen for The Martian. Here's a paragraph with some comparisons. The Martian numbers look to be barely high enough :-/
Paula

"... Other films that resonated strongly with audiences were “Hotel Transylvania 2” with 313 and “The Martian,” the Matt Damon and Ridley Scott sci-fi adventure, with 255. “Spectre,” James Bond’s latest martini-swilling outing, had a 282 rating, which represents an improvement over the 007 series’ last installment, “Skyfall,” with 231. Lynn said big-budget films need to score in the 250 range if they want to be successful."

Re: Box office tracking for The Martian

I saw a projection a few weeks ago for a $45+ million opening weekend. It's going to be interesting as the release dates are mostly in sync world wide. And the London press blitz will need to go world wide as there won't be too much promotion on TV in the US next week - Matt's overseas and there aren't many 'new' TV appearances (but pre-taped ones on the entertainment shows). Donald Glover was on Conan yesterday.

What this film should have going for it is good word of mouth. I don't know the competition of what else is out there, but reactions should be very positive, and a lot of people will see it before the official opening date due to preview screenings etc.

RE: Re: Box office tracking for The Martian

I think it will have excellent word of mouth but the opening weekend will have competition from Sicario, which is also targeting an older audience and is getting great reviews and Oscar talk. Also Universal is having a fabulous year and their Everest (also an 'adventure' flick) is going to eat into The Martian's audience. Neither are likely to keep The Martian from 'winning the weekend', but enough to knock it back by quite a few million. We got a shiny flyer in the mail promising a free hotdog with Everest, and that's all hubby had to hear - he wants to go. Lol.
