Potential new project
Matt may be involved in George Clooney's new directing project, from a script by the Coen brothers. From Deadline:

George Clooney has now committed to direct as his next film Suburbicon, and he is in negotiations with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Josh Brolin to star, I hear. Joel Silver is producing through his Silver Pictures Entertainment with Clooney and his Smokehouse partner Grant Heslov. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the script. The film has been financed independently, and Sony Pictures is the frontrunner to distribute. Production will begin next October.

Photos of Matt and Lucy in LA are at the Daily Mail:

Matt is on a break from filming Bourne 5 until early January, and is attending a range of promotional 'awards consideration' events for The Martian.

Ugh. After Monuments Men I'm not enthusiastic.

Yes, but Clooney's done well at the helm in the past. I think he's due for a good one. I can't imagine he's never gonna make a good movie again. But I definitely hear ya. I enjoyed seeing MM. Saw it once and never needed to see it again.

SAG awards

Matt and the ensemble cast both missed nominations for the SAG awards. Hope they cut back on the campaigning now.

But President Obama did name The Martian his favorite film of the year.

RE: SAG awards

I know it's silly but I'm bummed about the SAGs. Hopefully the HFPA does it better tomorrow.

RE: SAG awards

Jeffrey Wells' comment was The Martian died today. Sad to see it flame out this quickly, but it was never an acting-led film.

Hello from Hobart, Tasmania!

RE: SAG awards

To be honest, I never thought it would be an award contender. First of all, it's sci-fi, second the tone of the movie itself is vey light, maybe too light for awards. I was pleasantly surprised when it got all those award attention and got my hopes up a bit. I still hope it at least gets something, maybe GG.

RE: SAG awards

Wells always hated it. Which is just one more of the many, many, reasons to root for it. I also am holding out hope for the Globes. If Matt and the movie aren't nominated for Oscar then my Oscar evening will involve no TV, some bitter drinking and invective aimed in the general direction of Hollywood.

Buch of nerd haters. Ha.

RE: SAG awards

I am with you! At least it makes tons of money and even the Obama likes it! I guess he is happy with Matt's performance this time!

RE: SAG awards

You preach it, Sasha! Go girl! Ha, ha, Jeff Wells made her mad. I bet she's sorry now that last week she said he was a better guy than he's given credit for being.

I am so happy that my man Matt is nominated for Golden Globes, SAG and Oscars for his work in The Martian and I sure hope he wins because The Martian has been doing SO! great!

Re: Nominations

Well technically he got shut out of the SAG noms which has pretty much everyone puzzled. Just read the majority of the comments. But these globe noms are sure to put the martian back in the top of the race. I really would've liked a screenplay nom as Drew Goddard's script is pure quality but I'm not worried as the Oscars he should get it for adapted screenplay.

RE: Nominations

It's an awfully weird year when the GG have to be the voice of sanity. Some of those SAG noms were just plain bizarre.

Go Martian! Go science!

MIT Commenceement 2016

Matt will speak at MIT for the 2016 Commencement: (Will Hunting back at MIT, :)

From: (Anonymous) Date: December 10th, 2015 07:05 pm (UTC) (Link)

I long ago gave up on the idea that the clearly superior film, actor, director would necessarily get awarded--particularly at the GG's and the Oscars. The politics of ego combined with business interests makes rewarding true excellence dicey. I learned this when I discovered how Crash had managed to steal the Oscar from Brokeback Mountain. The Martian is an exceptionally fine film, and Matt Damon is in a rank with the very best actors and is great in the film. Once again, he gives the film what the film needs, not what critics suggest with their schoolroom speculations. Sorry to rant, but if Matt doesn't win, if Ridley doesn't win,if the Martian doesn't win major awards, I won't be surprised, just sad.

Please delete if too long or otherwise annoying.

RE: Awards

The best films never win, and the best performances don't usually get recognised, but the nominations are always welcomed. Thanks for writing Louie.
