Palm Springs Festival award
  • Matt will receive the Palm Springs International Film Festival Chairman's Award at a ceremony on 2 January. The award will presented to Matt by Ridley Scott.

“Since his breakthrough role in ‘Good Will Hunting,’ Matt Damon has taken on a series of challenging roles through his career,” Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner said. “In his latest film, ‘The Martian,’ Damon dazzles yet again as Mark Watney, an astronaut desperately trying to survive on Mars, yet still finding a way to laugh and bring hope to an impossible situation. It is an honor to present Matt Damon with the 2016 Chairman’s Award.”

  • Matt was nominated for a Critics Choice Award, with The Martian nominated for nine awards in total.

    AFI

The Martian was included in AFI's list of the 10 best films of the year.

Another interview with Drew Goddard, with more Martian interviews to come from Steve Weintraub at Collider:

Interview with producer Simon Kinberg. In one of the videos he talked about how once he read the book the only person he can think of playing Watney is Matt. He is the one who sent the script to Matt.

    Oscar talk

Deadline has a new interview and picture I believe is from last week's screening. I think they are really making a case for a best director win with Ridley. I love how Matt is giving Ridley all the credit and rooting for his director win while downplaying his own part, unlike some people who shall not be named.

    Best quote from Matt:

"With the Oscars, I definitely don’t feel any need beyond the idea that Ben now has two of them, and what the fuck is that about?”

    RE: Oscar talk

    You said it, Rose!

Nice article. I know a lot of Oscar prognosticators are picking The Martian to be nominated but few expect it to win. But the movie has some sort of undefinable magic that seems always to pull it forward. It has now made over $220 domestic, and is pushing $600 ww, which nobody expected. And I saw it was now second on the "likely winner" chart over at awards daily, which seems odd because almost nobody is picking it to win. But usually a movie in one of the first three places does win. Go science!

    Re: Oscar talk

I'm not following this closely, but it's also making a lot of 'year end 10 top films' lists by top publications such as the Wall Street Journal and Variety.

Any sightings of Matt since the Martian press blitz ended the day before the anniversary? He's staying very quiet.

John Krasinski is on the promo trail and highlighting the work of trainer Jason Walsh. Only a few quotes from his Men's Health article are available online.

    Re: Oscar talk

The video at the end of the interview seems new. I never saw it before. Initially I though it's just a trailer but it actually has a bit new footage of Matt. I wonder if it is from the DVD.

    Re: Oscar talk

Yeah, it was new! Cool little trailer-like. Had it been used it would've revealed he survived "to tell the tale"

I really like the 3 new images from the Deadline article photographed by Gabriel Goldberg.

    Re: Oscar talk

This Hollywood Reporter article seems to think Ridley is the key to winning. Maybe Matt and company have decided just to boost Ridley?

    Re: Oscar talk

Hey Louie! Yup, at least from the Deadline article Matt's all about Ridley deserving an Oscar. He is content with having won his early in his career and thus taking the pressure off and allowing him to focus on the creative and less about thinking about a career focused on winning an Oscar someday. I'd love for him to win. When he he received the UNICEF award 2-3 yrs ago at a UNICEF banquet, it was unexpected and Michael Douglas had initiated that honor to Matt from UNICEF. He was so gracious and shocked to win. His water.org is aligned with the work that UNICEF does so it was fitting for the occasion.

    Happy Holidays!!

    Re: Oscar talk

Thanks, Gregory. I guess Michael felt he might have owed Matt something (he did for his BTC awards). But Michael is a very sweet guy, anyway. Matt's greatness, aside from his massive acting chops, lies in his apparent selflessness when it comes to a piece of art he's involved in. Let someone else win the award, so long as the work is recognized. Definitely one of the big reasons I honor the guy. By the way, Ridley is one of my favorite directors, ever since "Blade Runner". If he wins, I'd be a happy camper. I'm pulling for Matt, though, and the film itself.

    Happy Holiday to you, G.!

Car chase on the vegas strip. HELL YEAH!!! If they could come close to the NY car chase in Ultimatum or Moscow in supremacy but on the vegas strip which is incredibly difficult to do but greengrass knows how to shoot action and it should be amazing.
