Seven Academy Award nominations
  • The Martian received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Matt, but Ridley Scott was not nominated for Best Director. A full list of nominations is here.

Best Picture - Simon Kinberg, Ridley Scott, Michael Schaefer and Mark Huffam, Producers
    Best Actor - Matt Damon
Best Adapted Screenplay - Drew Goddard
Best Visual Effects - Richard Stammers, Anders Langlands, Chris Lawrence and Steven Warner
Best Production Design - Production Design: Arthur Max; Set Decoration: Celia Bobak
Best Sound Editing - Oliver Tarney
Best Sound Mixing - Paul Massey, Mark Taylor and Mac Ruth

  • Producer Simon Kinberg discussed his surprise and disappointment at Ridley Scott's omission:

It was a good Oscar nominations morning for the The Martian. The film, starring Matt Damon as stranded astronaut Mark Watney, received seven nominations, including best adapted Screenplay, best actor for Damon, and best picture. But, in one of the biggest surprises of the morning, director Ridley Scott was not nominated for top honors in his category.

“It’s very upsetting,” says Martian producer Simon Kinberg. “We’re all shocked about it for all the obvious reasons. The movie was extraordinarily directed and I thought the best directed movies of the year. There’s no question that he’s one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and it felt like this move was an opportunity to honor that. This movie got a lot of nominations and the film is a testament to his talent and his artistry and his humanity. There’s a lot of his heart in this movie.”

Kinberg says he woke up at 4:45 this morning. “My body was like Christmas morning waiting to see if there was anything under the tree,” he says. “While I’m elated about the nominations we got for Matt and [screenwriter] Drew Goddard and everyone in the movie, all of these people at the end of the day march to Ridley’s drums. I’m happy for all of us and I’m happy for Ridley because he’s now a nominee as a producer of the movie. But I do not know how he could have been overlooked as a director.”

  • A statement from the producers is at E Online:

The men behind The Martian, including director Ridley Scott and producers Michael Schaefer and Mark Huffam were more than pleased with the news.

"We are genuinely honored, delighted and grateful for the very generous recognition our film received today from the Academy. THE MARTIAN was a demanding shoot and a true collaboration between every single person associated with it," they said in a statement. "So to see so many of our team members receive nominations this morning is particularly gratifying. A deeply heartfelt thank you to all the members of the Academy."

    Oscar noms

Still can't get over the shocking omission of Ridley Scott. So all these people earning these 7 nominations for the movie worked on their own without a guiding vision, apparently? It's crazy. And he's practically 80, this may very well be his last chance. Extremely upsetting.

I'm very happy for Drew Goddard, who wrote a phenomenal script, and the other crew members who were honored and Matt (which goes without saying). The only way the academy could even begin to make this right is to give The Martian best picture, because then Ridley would get an Oscar as a producer, at least.

I kind of agree with Louie. I'll probably not bother to watch the Oscars and just tape it instead.

Same thing for Argo, few years ago. He won the Oscars for Best Picture, but he wasn't even nominated for Best Director.

    Re: Oscar noms

As everybody I'm very happy for Matt's nomination but big shadow about Ridley! I feel really bad for him. Ridley was the soul of the movie. Matt said many times "it's Ridley's year". I was already disappointed he didn't win GG and I was putting my hopes in the Oscars.

    RE: Oscar noms

Agree! The only thing they can do to make up for this is to give Martian the best Picture! But I am not holding my breath!

No matter how much I want Matt to win an Oscar, this is Leo's year! (Sigh) Not necessarily because Leo has the better performance (I actually think he is trying too hard and acting too hard), but you know, the Struggle, the near death experience, the fake bear violation, he is doing everything he can to get this oscar it's almost amusing to watch( I love reading Lainey's article about Leo's fight to Oscar, I could not agree with her more). You guys should check it out.

Anyway, I probably won't watch either and just tape it. Might be more fun just watch the Martian one more time.

    Re: Oscar noms

Andy Weir was disappointed too, he posted a message on his FB page:
"Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Martian for receiving SEVEN Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

Conspicuously absent is Best Director. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't a huge disappointment to me. Ridley Scott made a masterpiece out of my scribblings. I'm truly baffled as to how he got left out."

    Re: Oscar noms

It's an excuse for me to have a day off so I'll be watching (it falls on a Monday here).

Very surprising that Matt got a nomination after no SAG nod and without a director or editing nomination. But it's still amazing for a sci-fi to get seven Oscar nominations when none were originally expected. And Matt's first time back in the lead actor category since GWH. Nice that it was also read out by John Krasinski.

Very sad news about Alan Rickman, who co-starred with Matt in Dogma.

Matt Damon’s response to his nom is delayed because he won’t stop repeating, “Ridley was fucked!”

I feel terrible for Sir Ridley Scott. He deserved a nomination. Perhaps if they hadn’t cynically made The Martian into a comedy…

Very sad indeed. Alan has always been one of my favorite actors. He was a great actor and I loved him in Dogma!

    Re: Oscar noms

I'm elated for Matt's Oscar nomination. Shocked that Ridley did not receive one. Maybe that's one of the reasons Matt was talking him up so much, maybe he knew something we didn't about Ridley's status among academy members.

I think Matt does have a chance against Leo. After all, Leo is the Susan Lucci of the Oscars, haha

As for Best Film, I know that Academy voters like a happy feel good film. Sometimes they don't go with he most artistic, avant-garde of films. It's very possible that it has a chance. It certainly has a major chance with adapted screenplay.

I was watching The Late Late Show with James Corden this week and noticed his guests take photos in a photo booth backstage. I wondered if Matt took one when he was a guest. So I Googled it and what to my wondering eye did appear but this very cute pic!!
