Matt Damon News Column
  • A teaser trailer for Downsizing has been released on the film's official Twitter page and YouTube ahead of the full trailer being released on 12 September.

  • The Hollywood Reporter's very positive review is here. Other reviews are less positive.

Downsizing is a wonderfully outsized movie for these times if there ever was one. Alexander Payne has taken a conceit heretofore used for gag-oriented sci-fi and comedy, that of shrinking human beings down to the size of a finger, and breathtakingly transformed it into a way of addressing the planet's overriding long-term issue. Captivating, funny and possessed of a surprise-filled zig-zag structure that makes it impossible to anticipate where it's headed, this is a deeply humane film that, like the best Hollywood classics, feels both entirely of its moment and timeless. It was a risky roll of the dice, but one that hits the creative jackpot.

  • Photos of Matt and Alexander Payne arriving at a press call in Venice are at the Daily Mail.

  • A new poster for Suburbicon is here.

    Hollywood Reporter review...rave

The Variety review is less positive, and some hate it. Not going to be a film for everyone, as Payne had guessed. Some complaints: too long, too obvious, too uneven and Matt's character is very bland. As expected Hong Chau and Christoph Waltz steal the show (Chau was said to be the likely Oscar nominee even during filming.)

    RE: Reviews

THR's rave is truly spectacular! And comparing Matt's character to a Capra or Sturges hero? Yes, please.

    Get well soon, Irina!
I'm glad that the Downsizing reviews are more or less positive. Kinda shame if Matt's character is bland though.

The nomination for Matt won't be, I have understood so from reviews

An Italian journalist said the the cast overacted. Everyone but Matt, who was exceptional as always.
But, IMO, he's more likely to get the nom with Suburbicon.

    Red Carpet

    Lucy's dress is gorgeous.
The president of Italy who arrived at the Lido for the opening ceremony, greeted Matt.

And yes, the reviews are mixed.

    Some reviews praising Matt:

"Matt Damon gives a thoroughly engaging performance as the middle American everyman, a “nice guy” but “a little pathetic” as Dusan describes him. His bland demeanour makes him the perfect foil for the very fiery (and very funny) Hong Chau."

"But if Hong delivers the film’s most revelatory performance, Damon is, unshowily, just as good in his turn as the schlubby Paul, basically the personification of the word “normcore.” There is something almost transgressive about making such a thoroughly decent, thoroughly middle-of-the-road, ordinary guy your protagonist, and even when the rather overlong film rambles off in one of its less successful directions, he’s worth sticking around for."

That’s the premise behind a sentimental comedy that begins as a tasty satire about the commercialisation and gradual degradation of a noble ideal, then retools, after a mid-term lull, into what Alexander Payne has always done best - a story about a directionless non-hero who finds himself, with some romance thrown in to ease his journey. The two parts don’t quite mesh tonally, especially towards the end of a two and a quarter hour film that sails towards sentiment on a tide of swelling chords while trying to act jaded and cynical about our messed-up planet, and messed-up heads. But it all just about works, largely thanks to Matt Damon’s solid, reliable, anchoring central performance and some nice sidelight roles - though one of these, featuring Kristen Wiig, is over far too soon."

"Speaking of the comedic tones of the film, it’s going to be a hard call for the Globes whether to categorize it as drama or comedy. The far-fetched premise carries an inherently comedic undertone and the editing sometimes aims for an expressly funny effect, but can you call a film that purposefully contemplates, among other things, the end of the human race a comedy? Kudos to Payne for playing with so many ideas at the same time and taking them far enough until the sadness and ridiculousness both emerge. Helping him achieve that is, besides the seriously underappreciated Matt Damon who demonstrates once again he can communicate a sense of groundedness and make the most foreign relatable, the film’s biggest secret weapon – Vietnamese-American actress Hong Chau."

And is someone maybe registered on The Times website and can get access to their review?

    RE: NY Times, partial.

I can only get the subheading & first paragraph, but they obviously love it.

'Matt Damon is exceptional in Alexander Payne's sci-fi comedy-drama with heart, about a community of miniaturized people.'

"... The Venice Film Festival was certainly launched with buckets of smarts, style, and swaggering ambition, from star Matt Damon and director Alexander Payne. The pair have brought us Downsizing, a sci-fi comedy satire that purports to be about environmentalism and the end of the American consumer dream, but is actually about something much more intimate, and simultaneously more expansive."

    lovely bits

These quotes are soooo encouraging and lovely, and not only for Matt Damon fans, but more importantly for adults who love movies and wish them to aspire to greatness.

    The Guardian:
5 stars - "Payne's miniature masterpiece" (lol!); "cram-packed with nourishment"; "bright as a button and sharp as a tack".

"... that rare thing: a ticklish and resonant crowd-pleaser for grown-ups"; "a major box office draw and leading awards contender".

"Moving and beautiful" (along with a heaping bouquet containing every possible sort of praise. Seriously, you have to read this!)

    "Exhilaratingly odd"

"You believe Downsizing largely because you believe Damon".

    :) Paula

AP report on press conf etc:

    People report:

Some nice comments from Guy Lodge in this mixed review:

As Paul, Matt Damon weathers such resistance with shuffling, faintly embarrassed, taupe-sweatered good humor, the ideal everyman to set such a fractious, literally multi-scaled world in balance: you believe Downsizing largely because you believe Damon, an actor who projects comfortable, five-foot-ten dependability at any height.
