Potential new project
  • Matt may star in a new project for Universal called King of Oil - from the Hollywood Reporter:

Matt Damon is in early talks to star as disgraced billionaire Marc Rich in Universal's The King of Oil.

The studio optioned Daniel Ammann's book The King of Oil: The Secret Lives of Marc Rich for John Krasinski’s Sunday Night Productions. Krasinski, who is red-hot after directing the horror hit A Quiet Place, will produce the biopic, which sheds new light on one of the most controversial international businessmen of all time. The book was first published by St. Martin's Press in 2009.

Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse will adapt the screenplay.

The hope is that Damon, who has a long history with the studio, including the Bourne franchise, will star as the businessman, who fled to Europe rather than face a prison sentence. The late Rich, who was once married to songwriter Denise Rich, was eventually pardoned by President Bill Clinton on his last day in office. The pardon was controversial because Denise Rich had made large contributions to Hillary Clinton's New York Senate campaign and to the Clinton Library foundation.

  • Matt is currently in Jakarta for Water.org with brother Kyle and Gary White.

    Rich movie

Ugh, I couldn't be less interested in the Rich project. Rich's Jewishness was such an essential part of who he was, from running away from the Nazis in Europe to his work for the Mossad (Israel's intelligence service). I love Matt to bits but everything about him screams, "I'm a goy!"

It's just bad, possibly even ludicrous, casting. Obviously Universal wants the biggest star they can get but he should pass.

    Re: Rich movie

Like always, it depends on the director. If they find one that Matt loves, he'll do it.

    RE: Re: Rich movie

He's a very loyal friend, that's a fact. And if he thinks it will help out Krasinski he will probably do it. Is Krasinski Jewish? That might help. Maybe Krasinski should play the part and Matt should direct :)

    Re: Rich movie

That's true. Do John and Matt have the same agent? Maybe Patrick can help them understand why, right now, Matt is not the right choice. But I'm sure they all know better than me.

Maybe Paula has a point here.

I don't think Matt could afford another controversy.
    Not now.
Not after what happened in the last months.

    RE: Rich movie

Well, I see your point, but there was nothing controversial about The Great Wall. Just stupid people who refused to read the plot and understand that Matt wasn't playing an oriental man and that he wasn't even the real hero of the movie: the army of women was.

But I agree on the fact that he'll be criticized. However, it's still not official. So let's not go ahead of ourselves.

Our resident Anon is saying I'm right? Obviously I need to rethink my stance. Ha.

    Re: Rich movie

You know, Paula, I think Matt is a good enough actor to play Jewish. He may have to have some prosthetic tampering or spend some time in a New York synagogue, but I don't think Jews generally demand that a Jew be played by a Jew. It's not the same situation as TGW where the only problem was that they wanted Asians to be the heroes. Then again, who am I to gauge anyone's cultural sensitivity? We feel as we feel!

    Re: Rich movie

Hollywood is changing (the world is changing)
We live in a time with a new sensibility and I believe that prudence would be advisable in this situation.
And I agree that Matt should avoid useless controversies.

John's career as director is booming.'A quiet place' was commercially and critically successful and now the studio has begun the campaign for the Oscars. It will also have a sequel that may be directed by John himself.
So, I don't think he needs Matt's help right now.
But I would like to see them work together again with the right project.

    Graham compilation

Nothing new, but an enjoyable compilation of Matt bits.

Graham Norton is the absolute best interviewer!

Can't believe they asked him about Weinstein, but he dodged the question really well.

The title seems to be "Le Mans 66" (or that is the working title) and the first photo with Bale on the set is out:
