Dinner with the President, filming stories
  • A report on Good Shepherd filming from DR1.com:

El Caribe newspaper reports that the security around Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has impeded photography during the filming of scenes for The Good Shepherd in Colonial Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo has been fitted to appear as Havana for the filming.

Meanwhile, El Caribe points out that "Brad Pitt has fallen in love with the DR." The same source says that Matt Damon and Robert De Niro also are enamored with the Colonial City. Diario Libre reports that they have visited Bayahibe, Juan Dolio and Samana seeking to buy a vacation property in the DR.

Another The Good Shepherd actor, Matt Damon, who speaks fluent Spanish, and his Argentinean wife, Luciana Barroso, attended a dinner with President Leonel Fernandez.

Reports say that part of the film crew has moved to the Sofitel Nicolas de Ovando, to get away from all the paparazzi in pursuit of catching shots of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who are staying at the Santo Domingo Hilton.

Diario Libre indicates that the filming will continue at the Mercado Modelo, the arts and craft market. Thereafter scenes will be filmed by the Soco River, near La Romana. On Saturday, filming will take place at the Presidential Palace, back in Santo Domingo.

Yesterday, Culture Minister Jose Rafael Lantigua visited the set.

  • More details on the Presidential dinner last weekend from El Caribe and Diario Libre - translated versions:

The president of the Republic, Leonel Fernandez Reyna, Sunday night offered a supper in formal dress specially dedicated to the actors of the film "The Good Shepherd", in the dining room of the third floor of the National Palace.

Those attending the supper included Robert De Niro and Matt Damon, but, until now, the presence of Angelina Jolie in the country continues to be a mystery.

Matt Damon is described as quite a simple person, who speaks good Spanish, since in his childhood he lived for a time in Mexico. His wife, the Argentinian Luciana Barroso, is also pregnant and will give birth in the summer, like Angelina. Luciana has returned already to Miami, where her husband recently bought a house, as her daugher goes to school there.

Only a few people, exactly 14, participated in a supper with the President Leonel Fernandez. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had not arrived, but present were Matt Damon and his Argentinian wife, and Dominican beauties Amelia Vega and Claudia Cruz, among other personalities.

  • This article reports a sighting of Matt, De Niro, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at a local restaurant on Thursday night.

  • Thanks for your positive comments and feedback.

Matt lived in Mexico? Aren't they confusing him with Ben (who spent some time there when he was 13, filming the 2nd Mimi)?

Wasn't there some kind of summer camp, for a year or two, perhaps connected with his mother's work? There was definitely references in interviews to an early summer romance with a girl in Mexico.

    Oh, I didn't know that...

I never read a thing about this. Any links to articles about this that people might have is cool.

I *do* know that in that Playboy interview he did a few years back, he said he *wishes* he spoke Spanish because he took it in high school and hasn't spoken it since then.

After a quick search I can't find many exact references.

In the Playboy interview he talks about his mother having gone to Mexico for the summer when Kyle was left in charge.

During the Bourne Supremacy press he says he wants to "go back" to Mexico.

I can't find the article where he's talking about a girl in Mexico being his first love, and how they thought it was going to last forever, but when he went back to home to Boston they got on with their lives and didn't really communicate again.

    Thanks again

I've emailed you before but wanted to let you know I'm still reading. For some reason, your journal is blocked at my workplace, but I catch up from home a few times a week. Thanks again for your professional work on the column.

    spanish

I thought it was weird that Matt had lived in Mexico as a child. Never heard that before. And he's fluent in Spanish? I thought he just started learning.

P.S. I check your site every single day, so you got at least one devoted fan here.

    Re: spanish

He learned Spanish in school, and most likely downplayed how much he knows in recent interviews.

    Thank you

Thank you for all the hard work, it's truly appreciated!
I check up on your site every single moment when I can.
And I'm sure that Matt would be happy with this as well!

I never knew he spoke Spanish, you learn something new about Matt everyday. Matt sounds like such a low key guy, that is probably why I am a fan you don't see him in the papers all of the time like Brad and AJ. Does anyone know how long they will be there?

By the way great site and thanks for all your hard work.

If you're asking how long they will be in the Dominican Republic - they've already gone. Filming has already probably re-commenced back in New York.
